[NR] What They Enjoyed The Most - Chapter 592
Added 2024-04-24 12:21:27 +0000 UTCThe meal arrives and the two pause their conversation. Neither of them particularly mind talking during a meal. And for Jenny, it is practically a finely honed skill from all the business meals she has been through. However, both of them also appreciated a well-made meal and if there wasn’t a need to talk, preferred to focus on the food.
Each crêpe was amazing though if they had to pick their favorites? Jenny enjoyed the simplicity and contrast of her vanilla bean ice cream and fresh caramel crêpe. A classic flavor combination that evolved with each bite.
At first, the ice cream was firm and so cold, while the caramel topping was so warm that its flavor was forefront. The ice cold filling provided a soothing relief to her mouth after the caramel made itself known from the very beginning.
By midway through, the ice cream had softened, transforming the texture to bring the finely crafted crêpe into the spotlight. All the while, the caramel had started to cool, allowing the more subtle flavor of the ice cream to dance as a partner with it.
At the end, the caramel had fully soaked into the crêpe, while the ice cream had only just begun to truly melt. Though don’t assume this meant the crêpe had gone soggy, at least not entirely. Some of it was still crisp and the crunch it provided elevated what could have been a bland end. While the flavors of the caramel and vanilla bean ice cream had mixed, that crunch provided an excitement to the rich flavors that had mellowed out.
After that, one might assume Jason had most enjoyed the desert as well. And to be fair, crêpes tended more towards sweet breakfast. However, he instead fell for the sweet dinner. Not the homage to chicken and waffles, though that was fantastic as well.
No, Jason was taken with the pork and honey molasses crêpe. He had always been one for the sweeter preparations of pork, and this crêpe fulfilled that. Now, this wasn’t a bacon crêpe.
Jason had bacon crêpes before and while delicious they lacked balance. Wiggly bacon’s unrendered fat required something to cut it, which took away from the meal. On the other hand, crispy bacon was hard to eat. Not to say it tastes bad, but comparatively?
The ham and honey molasses crêpe blasted the bacon crêpe out of the water. In the center was slices of ham, perfectly cut to have just a bit of chew and exactly enough fat. And that sauce! The honey had a floral taste to it, which he could tell wasn’t just an added flavor and that molasses. It added just the right amount of earthy, deep smokiness with just the right touch of bitterness to offset the honey’s sweetness.
Then the crêpe itself brought everything together. While all the crêpes tasted like they had slightly different batter, this one was spectacularly unique. Jason wasn’t sure what spices, but an expert mix had been added to the batter, which married the filling and the topping together in an amazing chorus of flavor.
So now, with the meal done, Jason and Jenny settled back into their chairs and relaxed.
Jenny groaned, “Why don’t we do this more often?”
Jason lazily waved his hand, “Because we’re too spontaneous. I bet you had to schedule this meal a few months ago or paid an absurd amount of money to buy the spot from someone else.”
Jenny sighed, “Well maybe if you could decide on what you wanted to eat.”
Jason, “Maybe if either of us could. NeoRealm has been so much easier, if only because there isn’t ever that much of a choice. That or I can follow my nose.”
Jenny, “As if following your nose would help here. Still would have to deal with needing reservations, especially since even a high-end restaurant like this isn’t devastatingly expensive. Most of the cost goes into ingredients. Though even the basic stuff anyone can get ahold of is pretty high quality nowadays.”
Jason nodded, “True that. And it isn’t even lip service like some stuff used to be. I’m so glad most people in the world got over the stupid ‘chemicals’ nonsense. Like, yeah, there are bad chemicals, but everything is made of chemicals. It doesn’t even particularly matter where they came from beyond what that might introduce outside of the desired chemicals and if the process is bad for the environment.”
The two stay silent for a moment and then Jenny pulls out a small speaker and puts it on the table. “That will prevent people in the distance recording our conversation, just cover your mouth and we’re golden.”
Jason raises an eyebrow, “Of all the places, this one is secure enough to say that?”
Jenny shrugs, “Well, you weren’t wrong earlier. I paid quite a bit for this reservation at the last minute, literally. When I contacted you? It was right after I confirmed the reservation had been transferred to my name.
“Any taxi we take, and even the apartment isn’t really safe. Well, I guess besides within our pods, but with my position, I have more restrictions on just how much privacy I get. It wouldn’t be the end of the world to talk to you privately, at least, normally that would be the case. However, you are now the center of attention for more than a few powerful groups, which ties my hands somewhat.”
Jason sighed, “So what do you want to know?”
Jenny, “Well, just to satisfy my boss’s boss when they question me later, did you cause the event?”
Jason laughed, “I don’t know what event you’re talking about, so how could I?”
Jenny smirked, “I’ll just mark that down as you being clueless. Now, with that out of the way, do you want to talk about it?”
Jason sat there silently for a few minutes before answering. “I probably should say something. It might be a secret now, but I don’t plan to keep it so forever. I’m just not sure if now is the time to let you know.”
Comments
I spent a bit too much time in the previous chapter going over all the crepes and so I just picked the favorite crepes to describe.

You go out of your way to describe it like this is a meal served in the shokugeki no souma series, yet no clothes ripping off or seeing weird picturesque scenes about the life changing taste? This mother son duo must have one hell of a poker face.
