[D'sP] Naming the town around Doyle's Dungeon

In the latest early access chapter (161 - Three Potential Names) the town is finally getting around to thinking of a name for said town. As the name of the chapter suggests, I narrowed it down to three potential names. And since I couldn't decide which you all get a crack at deciding. The three names are Haven which is supported by Ace, Osto Strato that has Jim behind it, and Wolf's Rest as a wild card that Jimmy threw out. Now because I do have to actually write the chapter you only get the weekend to vote on this. Anyway, here is what the chapter has to say about the names:

Haven was a simple enough name and Ace supported it because it represented an idea. He wanted his town to grow into a true haven on the planet where the strong protect the weak. Though he might have been a bit affected by the sudden appearance of Jan and so is projecting his desire to protect those under her from her.
Osto Strato is a bit of a joke that grew legs. Originally, someone had suggested Bone Street as at some point they had discovered that the system provided roads included ground up bone as part of the filler. Of course, Ace shot that one down because of how morbid it was. But sometimes a good joke won’t stay down no matter what you try. So knowing that Ace wouldn’t allow such an obvious name one of the people had remembered what it would be in Esperanto. With the new suggestion not being so in your face about the reference, Jim was able to get it past Ace.
And finally we have Wolf’s Rest. A name that Jimmy shouted out with little thought, the very first name suggested in fact. While the name is fun enough, it also has its morbid side as in this case the “rest” bit refers to all the wolves that are now resting under the soil. Still, it sounds nice enough and was oddly popular so Ace lost his chance to veto it.

Comments

Alright, cool. Yeah, I didn't think about it until just now either, but I agree with that it sounds better as Wolf's rest

Swayze0

Good point, I hadn't thought about that. I think I will stick with the singular because when I say it out loud it sounds better to me.

Akhier Dragonheart

I just realized this, but Wolves' Rest would be the plural possessive way to spell Wolf's Rest, do you want it to be singular possessive?

Swayze0

If it wins I will definitely be including that reason because it is gold

Akhier Dragonheart

also, it is important to note that it 'could' be considered a giant middle finger to those who left them behind. 'hey remember when you ran away and left us to deal with a bunch of wolves? yea, so this place is now called Wolfs Rest. So thanks for the help you cowards!'

zalex

It is winning at the moment. And that is part of why I put it up for a vote. All the names seemed reasonable to me.

Akhier Dragonheart

Wolf's Rest is the only one of the three that both stands out enough to gather importance, and can be taken seriously as more than just an irresponsible town. If there was another option that is more acceptable both as a town name and actually has relevance to the story more than a single isolated event, I would choose that option.

Joshua F. Garvin

They are rushing to get a name figured out. They want a name in place for when Jan's group arrives so they don't get greeted with [You have joined <Unnamed> Town!]

Akhier Dragonheart

That drift idea is interesting and there definitely will be enough time for that to happen.

Akhier Dragonheart

I specifically avoided any reference to the dungeon. Or rather Ace specifically avoided it. While the dungeon is important, he wants to have the name be about the town and not the dungeon.

Akhier Dragonheart

Honestly not the worst though at this point in my life the word/name "Ben" just makes me think of Ben from the Yogscast

Akhier Dragonheart

I was thinking along this line as well. Haven is too generic and self-inferred to mean anything useful to those too lacking in "Concepts" currently to generate anything of value for the town. The later two would likely do what you suggest. Honestly, the Town should be named something to do with goats/cows as those will likely be providing the most resources in meat, bones, milk, etc. for the town. It'd likely give an additional boost to crafters using those resources as well. Especially as they plan on using bones to trim the walls, eventually out to a full-on bone exterior.

Matthew

The secretary at the town hall would likely have all this information. Having the town lead check on things before setting up a system name would be a good idea.

Storyhunter

Reason the system might add effects is people tend to name areas after what is in that location. Thus calling a town wolf rest could spure the system to spawn more wolves in the area. The bone street name could end up creating living streets made of bone. It is likely that the system names can be changed but towns + cities could have non system names that become traditional while the system name is changed from time to time for buffs or other silly reasons.

Storyhunter

A couple of points about the town name. It can likely be changed in the future. The guy in charge currently could easily just set the name to be voted on later. It is also possible ( could become an issue) that the system might take a name + add special effects to the location based on the name that is chosen. So choosing a proper name for the town is important.

Storyhunter

More wild/ interesting ideas for the name. " Bone Haven", "wolf born town" , "bone born" a last town name idea is to take the towns that died earlier and combine there names in some way. This could be seen as remembering the pre system world and honoring it and those who died in the transition. Building on the saga of the founders. If your seeking for the founders to found something new using parts of the old town names might be a bad idea.

Storyhunter

Bone Haven. ( Possibly translated) pointing out here that language barriers are unlikely to be very strong and if Ace does a simple system translate he would likely get a accurate translation.

Storyhunter

I want to like Haven, but it something added to it or it'll almost as bad as 'dungeon town' I feel. Osto Strato doesn't feel good to say and it would fly over most people's heads. Wolf's Rest is the best out of the three, but the name fits an inn more than a towns. Plus if the place survives long enough you will start to see the name drift into something new. Where it started as "Wolf's Rest" then shifts to "Wolvest", which I great.

Knightlykobold57

Haven is too bland, Osto Strato is too morbid, and Wolf’s Rest is just wrong. It should be something that references the dungeon somehow, or maybe goats.

Andrew

In danish it's ben måde

Kara Nina

True enough. I probably could have found a better translation that makes bone road sound better. I just ended up choosing Esperanto because despite being quite biased towards romance languages is meant to be a more neutral language while still being well known.

Akhier Dragonheart

Ah, but language nerds will get it!

Akhier Dragonheart

The cows are having a bit of a time getting to the settlement sadly

Akhier Dragonheart

Haven feels almost as generic as 'dungeon town' and Osto Strato has an underlying meaning that many will not get 'unless explained by the author'. Plus Wolf's rest signifies the town's first true trial against the changes of the new system world.

zalex

I like the idea of Osto Strato referencing bones, but it's not particularly catchy nor does it roll off the tongue (also I'm biased against esperanto but that's secondary.) And then haven's a bit cliché, so... wolf's rest is my vote. It also rolls off the tongue better, too.

BismuthBorealis

I like Haven, but it needs a descriptor of some kind or it will have the same problem "Dungeon Town" does, it's too common. Problem is, I can't think of a good word to pair it with. Kobold's Haven? But then, they don't have a guarantee that Kobolds will stay the theme. Wolf Haven is just a lie, lol. Too bad they don't know about the Cow Goddess or they could reference that.
