After Lazenby refused to return for a second movie, the producers hired American John Gavin to play Bond in "Diamonds Are Forever". Just before filming, however, Sean Connery agreed to return for one last movie. The producers insisted that Gavin be paid in full for the three 007 movies he had been contracted for as if he had actually made them.

Darren Harrison

Love watching your 007 series journey and thoughtful comments. Looking forward to the rest. BTW - what do you think about the music soundtracks, especially the early John Barry ones He wrote most of the first 14 007 movie soundtracks and not only created the James Bond sound, but he also created the whole spy movie genre sound.

William Pryor

It's important to remember that Sean Connery was practically unknown when he was cast too - Bond made him a star. So having the new guy be another unknown wasn't a big change. After Lazenby didn't work out they started casting people with well-known TV roles, to thread the needle between someone recognizable but not already a movie star. (Until they changed the whole pattern with Craig.)

Easily in the top 3 of all Bond films.

So glad you enjoyed this underrated gem. The director was an editor up to this point, this was his first time in the chair, which accounts for the oddly experimental feel. There were endless Bond parodies over the years, most have been forgotten (as the hugely overrated Austin Powers will inevitably be in decades to come), but one of the most famous may be the Get Smart series. The more recent film version was unexpectedly good too.

This is one of my favourite films -- it's the one that made me a Bond fan for life when I was discovering the older films in the wake of "Casino Royale", but it's also a fantastically well-crafted picture, with a lot to recommend about it. :-) The poetry in the dialogue alone!

Opinions on Lazenby are divided but many people (myself included) do rate this film as one of the best in the franchise. I believe it's also Christopher Nolan's favorite and was an inspiration for Inception (the third dream layer specifically)

This wasn't taking place before You Lonly Live Twice. It was that Peter Hunt, the director, stuck to the book, which had Bond meeting Blofeld for the first time and decided to just roll with it and ignore the prior meeting.

The actor Timothy Dalton (of Wuthering Heights, Flash Gordon, The Rocketeer, and Hot Fuzz) had actually been considered for the recast of James Bond, but was passed for consideration because he was thought too young at the time.

So Director Peter Hunt had been the Editor for most of the preceding Bond movies, and this was also the only Bond movie he directed. (A documentary on the making of From Russia with Love credits his reedits for saving the movie from a disastrous shoot.) Hunt was also secretly queer, which was an open secret in that he never married and lived with a male roommate most of his adult life, which was a socially acceptable way to pass in mid 20th Century England and US.
