You Only Live Twice

Little Nelliy (the autogyro) and the rocket guns (Gyrojets) are real. The cigarette version and weapons on the autogyro not so much.

Peter Dillard

BTW George, you will indeed get Bond in space. Just have to wait until near the end of the Roger Moore era.

Man, Bond got off easy. My sister in law is Thai, and they had a traditional Buddhist wedding in Thailand. Different branch of Buddhism, but oh my god was the chanting while we kneeled thing torturous. It went on for 40 minutes, and even the much more experienced Thai weeding guests were shifting around constantly trying to get pressure off their knees. Kept on repeating the same chant too. I was trying to be polite and not act the rude farang (their version of gaijin), but kneeling that long without shifting is PAINFUL. I was all, dudes, we get it. Thank you. Good job. Go enjoy some cake.

The obvious next movie to watch is Rising Sun (1993), starring Sean Connery and Wesley Snipes. :-|

That's a result of the films not following the book order. The novel "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" was published before "You Only Live Twice". In the novel series, although Blofeld had been a villain in "Thunderball" he didn't meet Bond until "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." "You Only Live Twice" was the last full-length James Bond 007 novel that Fleming wrote. The later published "The Man With the Golden Gun" was written by a ghostwriter based on Fleming's notes and rough draft.

Next 007 movie will be a bit confusing. Blofeld does not recognize James Bond. "On her majesty's secret service" was supposed to be before this movie

Looking good George

The henchman Bond fights in Osato's office was played by Samoan pro wrestler Peter Fanene Maivia, known by his ring name "The High Chief." Maivia also served as the film's fight choreographer, and was the grandfather of fellow wrestler Dwayne Johnson. The rocket pistol and cigarette rocket were real-life weapons that were featured after the manufacturer paid for the product placement. The producer of the weapons was hoping to sell them to intelligence agencies across the world. "Little Nellie" was based on the real-life Wallis Autogyro. And yes, it could be packed away in 4 large cases. The real Autogyro did not have any of those weapons though. The weird typewriter with only row after row of numbers is an accounting typewriter. It allows for entering and performing calculations at high speed (well, high speed for 1968). To climb a wall, you would need electric assisted vacuum suction cups. And even then extremely dangerous, especially on the concrete wall Bond was climbing down. The volcano set cost $1 million to build (the equivalent of $17 million today. It could be seen from 3 miles away. The actor playing Blofeld (Donald Pleasence, one of the greatest of all time, you must see him in The Great Escape) wanted Blofeld to have some sort of handicap or massive scar so they made the prosthetic eye scar for him, which caused him non stop irritation. Plus, every time they set off an explosion on set, the cat would pee on Donald. The girl with eternal stamina is Kissy Suzuki.

In the full reaction they talked about watching “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.”

Expect more Bond in space in "Moonraker".

The boy who cried WTF

It sounds like you're doing Diamonds Are Forever next? (the final official Connery one) but technically George Lazenby stepped in and did On Her Majesty's Secret Service in between - and that's usually considered one of the best among fans. Just curious if the plan is to finish Connery then return for others or do the missing ones in order.

There appear to be two different submarines in the movie. The first one seen launching Bond via torpedo tube looks to be a model but I can’t confirm that. The submarine that rescues Bond at the end has a large bulbous structure on the top of bow (sonar dome, I think) and a deck gun forward of the sail, and those are features the submarine seen earlier lack. I don’t know if the intention is that is supposed to be the same vessel, but in any case, I’m pretty sure the first one is a simplified model. The real submarine is portrayed by “HMS Aeneas (P427)” which was a British Amphion-class submarine built during WW2 but didn’t enter service until 1946 and served for almost 30 years. The Aeneas had its deck gun removed in the 1950s as well as other modifications, so I’m not sure why the sub in the movie has that gun. Perhaps it’s just a prop. In any case, there is definitely no room for such a large office like M (and Moneypenny) have on a submarine like that.

Apologies for hurting your numbers, but for anyone who doesn't have time to watch even this edited version, here's a shorter alternative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJex6rYd9Ck

Me: So George, how's the new website going? George: 16:27 :-P :-)

Happy Hanukkah

yeah, George didn't wear his Globex Corp t shirt!

SnabbKassa

Right.. I don't know what the average Japanese male height was in 1967 [it is taller today], but I suppose it was probably... short enough that whatever they do to Sean Connery's face, he is GOING to stand out, because he is 6'2, or 188 cm tall. I know what George is saying. Bond is passive and does not make dramatic decisions in response to pressure like Daniel Craig or Ethan Hunt. He's not pro-active. He's no Poochie.

SnabbKassa

Coming from "Das Boot", the submarine that rescues Bond is humongous

Thall

I can't believe you got through these last two without George mentioning The Simpsons once.

Robert Cooper

My memory's a little fuzzy given how long it's been, but I'm pretty sure this was the first Bond movie I ever saw. That means it's always got a special place in my heart.

That poisoning scene was point-blank gross. Eww!🤮 😉😃

Jon Johns

the thug whom he fight in the office earlier in the film is Dwayne “the rock” Johnson’s grandfather

A most amazing thumbnail, once again 😄

Mike FromOz

the battle in the spy who loved me is pretty awesome as well
