I noticed that too. Was trying to remember if the children's author was "Roald" or "Ronald", and maybe this was his brother or some such. How do you pronounce "Roald" anyway? I assume oa dipthong, so kinda like "Rolled"?

The most surprising thing for me about this movie is that Roald Dahl wrote the screenplay. As in Roald Dahl the children's book author, most widely known for "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", which you'll be watching soon.

2025-08-12 19:27:36 +0000 UTCI think the a little too sexist elements here are more laughable than the Japanese culture aspects. On that front...you could tell they were trying. They went out of their way to go fairly deep into various cultural elements, ceremonies, etc. And would it all pass the sniff test today? No, of course not. But I've always thought that was a dumb standard. For its time, this might have been one of the most pro-Japanese culture movies produced. And its kind of like the idea of circuses with trained animals -- once upon a time before infinite TV channels, the internet, youtube, binging movie reactors etc., it would have been virtually the only exposure a lot of people would have had to those things.
