Gangs of New York

Much greater satisfaction there.

Also the song playing during the end credits: “The Hands That Built America” by U2, was written not only about the time progression and changes to NYC therein, seen at the end of the film, but the last line was made in tribute to the 9/11 attacks. During the 2003 Oscars, U2 performed A slightly altered version of that song for a stronger, more directly symbolic tribute to the victims of the 9/11, including a specific focus to where the attacks primarily occurred—- to the city of NYC.

At 1:16:35-37, when they introduced Amsterdam as Bill’s young assistant after that boxing match, the look Leo gives as he’s being rushed into the ring to be praised for his work reminded me of that picture of a young Michael Scott shaking the Ed Trucks hand, in The Office(US version). 😆

32:20 the knife George mentions has a cross hatch pattern on it because it was made from a file .Files were made of very good quality steel and were and still are repurposed into knives.

That first one is terrifying.

I think you are right... Daniel Day Lewis has lifted up a ton of movies with his acting

George, to answer your question about why the people being hanged were dressed nicely and willing to take money even at the foot of the gallows, there's two historical reasons for that (Beyond just wanting to look their best in their final moments). 1) In some legal systems, the executioners were allowed to keep whatever clothing/money/jewelry/items the victims had on them at the end. In these situations the condemned often deliberately dressed as nicely as possible as a bribe for the executioners, so they would do their job well with as little pain as possible. If the executioners weren't paid off like that, they could make it a lot more painful. 2) In other legal systems, the FAMILIES were allowed to keep whatever the condemned had on them, even if the rest of their possessions were taken by the state. So by taking their best clothing and jewelry with them (Or even selling it and carrying the cash with them), they ensured that SOMETHING got to their loved ones. I don't know which angle they were going for in this film, but either one would fit what we see.

You asked where the boxing stance comes from. This is a classic bare knuckle boxing stance & can be seen in most bare knuckle systems up till & including Corbett's 'scientific boxing'. The stance only really changed with the adoption of boxing gloves. It's surprisingly effective because the forward hand can be used as a guard to create distance from your opponent. If you open the fists and turn over the hands, it's very similar to numerous kung fu stances including one of the Wing Chun guards. In fact when Wing Chun first reached England it got the nickname Chinese boxing because of the similarity.

hi Sevn thanks for letting us know! could you tell me the time stamp? thanks!

George Simone

You missed an n-bomb before the priest strikes the Irish dude.. may want to take another pass at the censoring before YouTube upload

The good, the bad and the ugly is another great movie about ignoring the civil war and it was made along with a fistful of dollars, with many of the same cast and crew including Clint Eastwood

Just a little add on, William “Boss” Tweed was 100% real and the elections were conducted just as shown. I forget where I read it but yes “Bill Cutting” is a combo of William Poole and someone else, I forget the name at the moment. He’s clearly a member of the Know Nothing Party, and that flag that says “Native Americans Beware of Foreign Influence” is just so interesting, the nativists called themselves Native Americans, foreign influence are the Irish and Chinese in this film…. Meanwhile 1500 miles to the West, and still during the Civil War, parts of the US military are fighting various Native American Indian tribes. History is so insane I love it!

Actually a great follow up would be Let the Bullets Fly, which ironically only was screened at the Tribeca film festival because Martin Scorsese was a fan of the movie.

Stuart Sutcliffe

Aside from ending (Navy never opened cannon fire on lower Manhattan) the NYC Draft Riots in that way, the rest of the movie, the politics (Boss Tweed is THE poster boy for city corrupt politicians and he ran NYC for decades), the cultures, ethnic groups, gangs, violence, living conditions, all is very surprisingly and horrifyingly accurate!

Bill B.

Chinatown and also the Civic Center, with 1 PP (for any Law & Order fans) and a major FBI building. So yeah it’s changed a lot!

A great follow up is Lincoln starting Daniel Day Lewis

Matt88g

The third act, when Scorsese tries to really tie it together with the grander themes, kinda falls apart I think... but the first two acts go pretty hard, and regardless, DDL gives one of those performances that's worth watching no matter what's going on around it.

Chris

PPS: In the future you might consider Far and Away (1992) a Cruise/Kidman movie with a much lighter tone (and no DDL), but similar setting and time and epic scope.

I still don't think this is a great movie. I think the power of Daniel Day Lewis's aura just allows people to overlook that the rest of it is just a meandering vanity project that's more a slice of life than a story. There are certain directors, Scorcese, Tarentino, etc., that are near sacrosanct and you are not supposed to critique them. But I've always been up for calling them out when they get self indulgent. P.S. That's a great look for Simone in the thumbnail. She should start wearing that as a daily getup.

Such a badass movie

tullius cicero

Cameron Diaz is completely miscast in this movie its so hard to watch her. To be honest so was DiCaprio but he is a far superior actor to Diaz so he was ok. Daniel Day Lewis just kills it and saves the movie.

thomas king

Suicide squad 2022 is a lot of fun.

Carlos Hurtado

I know it's been on the poll quite a few times and hasn't won but I would love to see you guys check out Lincoln (2012). It's my favorite Daniel Day-Lewis film.

Carlos Hurtado

The Five Points today is Chinatown in NYC.

Marc Viloria

Let's goo!!!

Zack Gallardo

superman 2025 is coming to video later this month. you might consider checking out suicide squad 2022 before then.

Haven’t seen My Left Foot. Strongly recommend Lincoln, Last of the Mohicans, and In The Name of the Father.

jmundt33a

A palate cleanser

jmundt33a

Hey, I'm from the Lower East Side of Manhattan near where this took place. I'm from Knickerbocker Village on Monroe Street. Its so cool to watch this again with you guys.

Rob

Such a great performance by Daniel Day Lewis. If you want to understand why he's one of the greats, you could maybe add a few more of his movies to your watch list? He's won 3 Oscars for best actor for My Left Foot (1989), There Will Be Blood (2007), and Lincoln (2012). So other than There will be Blood which you have seen, those other two Oscar winners would make for a great watch. Other movies of his I would consider essential viewing are The Last of the Mohicans (1992), and In the Name of the Father (1993).

dudewheresmycar

I'm not saying I woke up early to watch this as soon as it premiered, but I will say that when I noticed what time it was when I woke up I didn't try to go back to sleep. The story is a mishmash of individually true factoids drawn from around a 30 year period in the mid-19th century. Several of the rich and government characters are real people, but many had lived earlier or later than the film is set. Bill "the Butcher" is loosely based on a man named William Poole, but only in general "theme", since he was never a crime lord who RULED the Five Points and (probably) never actually killed anybody. The Draft Riots that closed the film really happened, but the reprisals to put them down weren't QUITE as extreme as seen here. There was no naval bombardment by the US Navy. But even without that, it was a violent eruption that shook the city. And showing the gangs literally blown apart by the military helps emphasize what's going on.

Desperado 🙏🙏😬
