Literally subscribed just so I could say this (and I know I didn't have to, but I wanted to anyway, this just pushed me to) - but breaks are important. Your comic is the one I still read and I started sometime around 2006/2007 I think? And I love seeing how far you've come, how the stories have grown and changed, and the character arcs (my GOD the character arcs!). Take a break, recharge, refresh, and do whatever you need to do to keep providing us with great content <3 (maybe that's selfish lol, but I love your comic so much and would be sad to see it end - even if all things must eventually. I'd rather you to end it instead of just ending it because you were too burnt out to do it anymore. As someone just starting out in my own content creation space - a podcast - I suddenly understand the difference so much more clearly). We'll be here when you get back <3

Jeph, I have been reading your comics for 22 years. When I started I had no kids, now I have 7 almost 8. I have started from the beginning of QC a number of times and “binge read” which I can do on n December. Also a good time to read Alice Grove again. Love that one. Have a good break.

Hi Jeph, I've been a reader for a long time. In actual fact QC has been my "home screen" (back when that was a thing and now preloaded tab) since comic 61 I know this because it was the comic where pintsize shoots his laser and i absolutely lost it at the age of 15. I am nearly 37 now. Your art or guests has been in my life every weekday for nearly 22 years, I own martins infamous TEH shirt and i've been a member of the patreon as often as i could afford. I have never reached out I'm very much a "don't meet your heros" kinda guy and some interaction with reddit or the forums made me keep to my happy "just a reader" space. However your recent decision to take a step back for yourself made me want to break out of my little space. You sir deserve everything good that could possibly be granted to a person. You may think there are more benevolent people more deserving and there probably are people just as deserving. Your commitment and the little joy you have brought to just my life nearly every day I cannot make you understand how much it has meant to me what QC has got me through just by wanting to see the next post on a monday. All things do end and that's the same for QC and i'm sure i'll cry a little then too. Jeph I don't know you but i do know Martin, Faye, Dora and Hannelore and I am just so very thankful to you for giving them to us. I wish nothing but the best for you and i hope your rest is plentiful.

Saw this announcement via RSS today, logged into Patreon to share my support. QC is super fun and I hope to keep enjoying it for a long time. I'm excited to see what Martin & Claire discover at Cubetown; I want to see Dora navigate married life and mentor Ayo to functionality; I want to see Hanners to keep learning how to adult. Jeph, these things are only possible if you're healthy and happy. QC is a big creative project that nobody else can do. If you need time off, then QC needs you take time off. Enjoy your holiday, I'll be here when you get back. PS totally support the other commenters who recommend a multiple, meaningful breaks during the year. You should absolutely plan 4-6 weeks off in 2025. Fill it or don't. You're the boss, be kind to yourself.

I didn't start reading QC till 2009 when a friend of mine at college introduced me to it, but from then on I was hooked. I remember those early days using my free periods to just sit and read QC determined to catch up so I could gush with my friend about everything QC. 15 years later we now live in completely different cities with very different lives, but will still drop each other messages when something awesome happens. QC is more than just a comic Jeph, it's been something that's kept a friendship alive, educated, inspired thought and conversation and most of all bought joy. You work incredibly hard not just to create but also to take nuanced topics and explore them in a respectful and beautiful way. Be proud of yourself Jeph your little corner of the interwebs is amazing and you've more than earned a break 21 times over (one for each year you've been doing it!) get some R&R we your audience will still be here when you return 🖤🤍

Also, if you take unsolicited advice from random internet strangers, make the first week back a like M/W/F schedule, or even less - I see lots of friends have to take breaks, then dive back at full speed, and it ends up hurting how much they like doing the thing, because there's this huge contrast between "chilling on holiday" and "going full speed"

well deserved, enjoy your time off! also, I'd fully support you taking at least this much time off every single year. just for the record. saying this as someone a) financially supporting your patreon for over 10 years (missed my 10 year anniversary last summer) and b) living somewhere 30 days of paid leave are standard per year. and I mean that for fully taking the time off! (not like now where you seem to still plan to fill a lot of those days with new content, just not in the form of new comics - which I appreciate, don't get me wrong, but I'd have been happy without that too)

I was going to say, while agreeing with Ethan, decide with family (during this break time) when is the optimal time for vacations. Maybe two of them, two weeks long, at opposite ends of the year? But one thing I’ve learned, is if you don’t plan them AND book them, they don’t happen. Trust me, I’ve been in the jungle a long time (76 years) and I know what the drums are saying. Take those breaks!

Twenty two years! Where does the time go? It certainly doesn't feel like it's been that long... All this time and it's still just as good as always, looking back at old comics is a lot of fun as I find myself rereading old story lines on occation. Enjoy your well-earned break! We’ll be here when you get back. One small piece of advice: really take a break. Do as little as possible. Disconnect from the news, social media, and as much of the world as possible. A few years ago we had a really stressful reorganization at work - the kind where the first thing you do when you get home is mix a drink, then kiss your spouse. My wife arranged for us to take a small, relatively inexpensive, cruise and those few days completely disconnected from the world was just the thing I needed to cope with the stress.

Having a daily comic is fantastic, but I for one would be happy with any cadence that works for you. Please give that some thought upon your return. e.g. you could work every other week, and perhaps schedule the comics to be published every other day. None of us want QC to end, and we therefore (perhaps selfishly!) care about your wellbeing. Your superhuman heroics are surely unsustainable in the long term, even with a decent buffer of unreleased comics it must be so stressful. Don't be afraid to renegotiate your self-imposed commitments; we're all behind you buddy.

Garry Trudeau used to take vacations pretty regularly. The newspapers would just do reruns of old ones which was very jarring given how topical the strips often were. The "Behind the Scenes" stuff sounds fun, but mostly enjoy your time off.

I've been following this strip a long time, from when there were less than 1000 comics. Yes, yes, YES! We're obviously here for the long term, which we want to be as long as possible! Do what you need to do for you, take the time to rebuild your mojo. Get another wife, another dog, another drawing surface, more stamps on your passport, whatever. Don't make any time or schedule promises. After the first break, you may realize you needed that break to figure out how to REALLY take a break, which a second break will address. You'll be back whenever you're back, and not a day before. No promises. Just shut up and go! Drop us a note when you can, but no promises for that either. You go do you! I've lost too many awesome creators who simply burned out and retired. Jeph, you've already pushed the mechanics of your drawing hand to its limit and beyond, multiple times. Don't do this with your soul, or your health, or your heart. Keep those healthy! I greatly admire and appreciate creators who learn how to pace themselves, and who learn how to put the big picture first. There are some creators who chose to leave from a fantastic place, ready to take their lives in new and wonderful direction. If you leave QC, that's the only path I'd like to see you take. Go from strength and success to the next strength and success. QC has affected me in many wonderful ways. The QC Patreon community is one of the best, period. See, I remember the Elder Days when new webcartoonists would show up, make a flash... and then burn out in a few years at most, sometimes less than a year. They'd just start putting longer and longer gaps between updates, make promises, break them, and eventually (after looooooooooooooong stretches of checking patiently) I'd give up. As someone who has read your comic every weekday for the past 10 years as part of my daily rituals, take a break and recharge. As someone who is also self employed with no days off for decades, when I took a week for my honeymoon a few years back, that break from context and pressure helped me gain a lot of clarity on how to make my project (and life's work) substantially better and more coherent. Wish I could like every single one of these supportive comments. While you are relearning how to relax, take 10 minutes and decide on a vacation schedule for next year. Creators need to take breaks, and subscribers rarely have issues with it, especially when they know it's a regular thing.

After working pretty much non-stop for 30 years, I took a six month sabbatical at the beginning of this year. It was a bit scary. I have literally never been unemployed and I did it by choice. I feel bad if the reason he hasn't taken breaks is because he thought too many readers would abandon the strip. Even if that's a concern, he could probably build up a buffer during the year, maybe only publish 4 weeks per month, that builds up 4 weeks of strips over the year.

when gary trudeau decided to to rake a break from doing doonesbury on a regular basis after nearly 20 years straight, he took a break for 14 months (and his resumption merited being being mentioned on the floor of congress.) i think by contrast, four weeks just seems very reasonable and, tbh, i would consider taking regular breaks of 2-4 weeks every few years or so going forward. in the end, the wellness of the creator also benefits the audience (who would lose a lot if said creator just said 'i'm done' someday.)

Ha, I'd say you've earned it. When I read today's comic it had JUST occurred to me that I'd been reading regularly for close to 20 years, which is nuts. In some sense I've known you longer than most people in my life. Enjoy the break - even when you are doing something you love, you still have to take time to recharge and take care of yourself.
