Hope you're doing OK. Glad you're moving on to Cowboy Bebob just in time to see how badly Netflix botches the live-action remake next month. Anyways, I really love the ending of the anime series. I can sorta understand why some fans wanted to know what happened like... literally, and physically, outside of Shinji's mind. But for me personally, I'm OK with the show just being Shinji (and Anno) figuring things out. I don't need the rest.

I agree they really should have cut some of the unnecessary stuff and spent more time with kawaru. I think having the final angel on the Eva team for a while would have been a really great surprise after spending time with him for a good handful of episodes. the production of Evangelion feels really tumultuous and I'm sorry the Creator went through all that

On a less informational note. I really wish that some of the worst episodes in the middle of the show were cut in favor of stretching episode 24 over several episodes. I guess shoving so much stuff into episode 24 kind of makes the viewer feel how everything is falling apart so quickly, and its not exactly rushed, but rather hectic. But it would have been nice to have had more time developing Kawaru and Shinji's relationship, and less time to focus on more questionable parts of the show.

I mentioned in another comment that a lot of info regarding the production of eva is questionable and there is no consensus on a lot of its validity. So some of the stuff I'm about to talk about, while considered common knowledge by many fans, I can't promise is totally accurate. For the sake of brevity, this is a disclaimer for everything in this post. The director of eva, Hideaki Anno, and the director of Utena, Kunihiko Ikuhara, were good friends. It is said that the character Kaworu was inspired by Ikuhara. And Anno has said that the scene with shinji and ikuhara in the onsen was based on a time that he and ikuhara went to an onsen during the production of sailor moon. The production of the show was rocky, with a lot of unexpected time constraints and budgeting issues. The shows release also coincided with 1995 Tokyo subway sarin gas attacks. All of these factors led the show to use more low budget and experimental animation techniques along with removing parts of the show that were thought to be too similar to the attacks in the middle of production. A lot of people were not happy about the last two episodes. These created a sea of criticism and death threats towards Anno. Anno has said during interviews that the response sent him into deep depression where he considered ending his life: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCkeQIAOuBg To a lot of people (including me) this really colors my interpretation of the end of evangelion, which was being produced as all of this was happening.
