A Follow Up to The Fish That Destroyed California. And on how spectacle as politics has a way of getting out of hand.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the Trump admin’s policies towards Canada.
Most everything I can make sense of from the point of view of methodically destroying the liberal international order. The aggression against Canada, while aligning with that goal and the dismantling of NAFTA seems rather…. stupid. If tariffs are a negotiating tactic, the material gain from Canada is unclear. There are also clearly strategic needs and dependencies with Canada which aren’t served by this posture. Rapid disintegration of relations is not reasonable considering the intermixing of infrastructure, industry, and borders. If the idea is to force companies to pick a side of the border, this is a needlessly messy way of doing that. If it’s spiteful attacks against a perceived enemy or just posturing, the pullbacks look weak and the threats seem to have encouraged a more anti-Trump Canada. I could go on and on here.
Basically every angle seems like there is significant short to long term harm at a huge expenditure of political capital with no clear material gain. The pattern of threats before a last minute delay looks weak and does economic damage.
Did I just miss something?
What’s going on here?

Great to see you covering this administration/interim period. not to be selfish right after a new video, but do you know what video will be next and when it will be out? is it the Israel/Palestine video, or is the situation internationally too chaotic for gaza to make a video on it immediately?

This is just so refreshing - step by step illuminating the circus of American civilization. From the outside, it's absolutely baffling to see adults acting like elementary kids "no YOU stink!" No! YOU stink!!" -- in my world, making a mistake is cause for contrition. The more emphatic the assertion of that mistake was, the greater the embarrassment. Submitting a draft with a typo in it is embarrassing. Making a factual error is mortifying.
It seems that American society left all standards behind a few decades ago, and we got a New England upper class twit pretending to be a texan cowboy, and this was a winning formula for becoming president! Now we have a game show host, serial fraudster, sexual predator, thin skinned spoiled brat douche bag in chief -- and the people with money are like, yeah, I'll take that risk if it'll get me a tax cut. WTF...
