The thing I have been thinking about is how you frame Kissinger's idea of credibility... since weirdly enough I *somewhat* agree with the idea that credibility is critically important for national security, even if it is an oversimplification of prestige in some cases. Really it's about the alliances and making sure that your allies believe that you are really worthy of their time... and lives!
Imo, Kissenger's mistake was that he was kind of pandering to the hawks in the alliance who were already somewhat unhinged, perhaps because he feared what would happen if NATO broke up? Idk, I am talking out of my butt here.
My larger point is that I don't think Kissinger's obession with credibility alone can explain why Kissenger did things like bombing Cambodia, but maybe you have more evidence of that than I do!
