As a kid did yall have any nonhorror gaming experiences that freaked you out or got unexpectedly dark and stuck with you for a long time after? Stuff like the infinite void of the PS2 menus or like half the things in Majora's mask. For me it was the end of Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter for the DS which had one of the freakiest endings I had ever come across at that age and definitely contributed to my eventual love of horror down the line!

The gardening makes it very unique from Metroidvanias I have played. In my top ten for sure. Also Botany Manor! Very solid and chill puzzle game. Made me wanna start growing some plants!

It’s my favourite game of all time so it was incredibly interesting to see how many directions the game could’ve taken and strangely inspiring to hear the insecurities of the team about following up the original considering how infallible Valve seem as a development studio. For a question for the show, what is a game you’ve tried to love for nerdy “game history” reasons ? I have tried in vain 3 or 4 times to get into Legend of Zelda Ocarina Of Time, and I cannot begin to describe how unfun I find that game. The branching map you explore is a constant and you learn things both as a player and as a character on each run until eventually identifying a path to victory. Each of the 3 characters interact with the encounters differently presenting unique puzzles both in deck design and map discovery.

But the final third, was weird, dragged out, and really diluted the movie into being just “good”.. Since then I have always said, “That’s a Funny People”, for different medians, that start out amazing, but doesn’t have a well thought out final third. My question is, “what’s a Funny People” for you all in games? Mine would be Infinite Wealth. I really loved the first 2/3rds of that game, but really had to force myself to finish the game for the last 10ish hours.

I always found it interesting how sites like GameFAQs categorize their games by genre, because it's such a moving target generation to generation, and genres are such fluid concepts. I propose a challenge: what is the smallest number of genres you can name that covers all(most) games? While the second season’s art style is a work of art overall - the art style is all over the place (especially the flash forward/backwards sequences, which are completely different from one another). - The plot introduces important characters who take a sudden leave of absence (a certain one-armed woman, task force teammates, or a ginger-haired love interest for example?) - The first season had a few lyrical songs in key fight scenes, but the second season throws them in at will. I personally liked when these types of songs signified important story beats. **TLDR: Season 1 told a tightly-written story with a clear identity and message. Season 2 tries too hard to set a foundation, upon which, new LoL franchises will be built. Old characters get written out of the plot, new characters come and go, important plot points get glossed over, and the art style is all over the place.** Where do you all stand with Season 2? Am I insane in the Arcane?!

Haley De Boom wouldn’t explain the premise that sets up Dragon Age: The Veilguard because it was a spoiler at the end of DLC for a 100 hour RPG that came out 10 years ago and Jacob didn’t want to “spoil” the ending of the first Scream movie that came out 28 years ago. Going into the 2 tens I feel like MinnMax needs to establish what exactly constitutes a spoiler in these circumstances? And what is the acceptable amount of time after something has come out before just saying “spoiler warning” before diving into the topic at hand?

2024-11-26 20:41:03 +0000 UTCHi MinnMax! Seeing that Grunn is being discussed this week, I just wanna add that that game broke big earlier in the summer at the AMAZE festival in Berlin, Germany. AMAZE is a festival dedicated to more arthouse and experimental games and interactive experiences. I was lucky to be part of the showcase line up this year alongside really cool indie stuff that isn't much talked about in the game press. It would be really cool if MinnMax shines a little bit of a spotlight on the festival next year. I know that travelling to Germany is a huge ask, but they now have a steam event for the duration of the festival and many of their submissions and nominees can be played online.

But the weird thing is, I know the PS layout even though they're just shapes. And don't even get me started on the XBox shoulder buttons, which is what my Steam Deck uses, but I play in bed so I usually don't have lights on to see the labels. Any ideas on how I can internalize these different layouts or am I doomed to always changing the controller scheme to PS4 in a game's options menu?

2024-11-26 19:41:43 +0000 UTCSo last week I wrote that a band I know has a song in Stalker 2. It turns out, there are more than 400 licensed Ukrainian songs. Some of the tunes are from bands I've hung out with and the lead singer for Dakh Trio, who have a few songs in there, studied at the music school I went to and I used to see her around all the time. I have a friend who is on one of the in-game podcasts too. A Ukrainian game alone getting this much attention is so cool for me, but the licensed soundtrack literally feels like they said "you know that guy Jason? let's put 100 songs he really likes in this game". When was the last time a game felt like it spoke so directly to you in the way Stalker 2 does to me? P.S. as a PS5 owner, I have to wait to play this game a few more months. A sad irony since I probably live closer to Pripyat than anybody listening to this podcast.

Personally I'm putting Resident Evil 2 & 4 & SIFU in my GOTY lists this year since I wasn't able to get to them in their years of launch. But I think it would be very interesting to see how lists would shake out if you could include games that are new to you in that year.

I decided to wait with them for a while. I bought a pumpkin pie and a tub of Cool Whip from the Wal-Mart across the parking lot and brought it over to eat while waiting. I ate the whole thing while sitting there and we still talk about it today. Good times... Good pie...

2024-11-26 19:29:39 +0000 UTCY’ello minnmax Last week’s GOTY prologue podcast got me thinking. I moved to a new home last year and so I had multiple projects going on at the end of 2023. One project I took on was assembling a new desk for my wife, which turned into one of the most complex assembly projects ever (94 pages of instructions!). Last year I listened to the minnmax 2023 game of the year debates while assembling the desk, and now whenever I look at the desk it makes me think of Leo’s unforgettable pitch for Hitman 3. Then 2024 GOTY prologue pod dropped last week and I listened to it while assembling some new end tables for our bedroom, so now I feel like the end tables are going to remind me of 1000x resist… It got me thinking, does anyone else have random inanimate objects or home improvement projects in your home that make you think of a specific podcast or other form of media? Love all of the content y’all keep up the great work!

I posed a simple inquiry: is inventory management a la Resident Evil 4 considered encumberment? Swords were drawn and blood was spilled from there. Your thoughts? Is inventory management and encumberment essentially the same game mechanic?

Just pick a peak emotional moment in your life, maybe your last vacation or a childhood experience. There probably isn't a good game about that thing." I thought this was a super good point, what do you think? (btw the talk is from 2014, so it might not still hold up)

2024-11-26 19:13:47 +0000 UTCHi team, spicy one for you: Black Myth Wukong, mostly huge in China, gets a GOTY nod at The Game Awards with the lowest Metacritic score of any GOTY nominee ever. Also, 1000x Resist, a game banned in China, somehow doesn't get a single nomination, getting left out of some obvious categories, especially the indie ones. For context, 15 indie games were nominated in at least one category. The voting outlets that I know of seem to be pretty hot on 1000x Resist. Either of these facts separately wouldn't be too suspicious, but taken together, should we be concerned that China has an outsized influence on video game awards? Is it possible that 1000x Resist was snubbed solely because it would be awkward for the streamed show to advertise a game that China really, really wouldn't want its citizens to know about? Finally, and relatedly, should we be concerned that video game media outlets aren't calling this out as a potential reason for the snub?

Tekken 8 didn’t get a nomination, Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat didn’t get one last year, and to date the only fighting game to ever be nominated is Smash Bros. Ultimate. If the biggest fighting game franchises ever struggle to even be in the running, what changes can get them to go all the way? Do fighting games need better stories? Mechanics? Even more characters???
