Join Us For The Deepest Dive On Mirror's Edge!

You all voted for it here on Patreon, so we're officially kicking off The Deepest Dive on Mirror's Edge. It's the 28th game we've tackled for the series so far! Join Leo Vader, Jacob Geller, Charles Harte, and Alex Van Aken as they play through the 2008 first-person parkour classic from DICE, the creators of Battlefield.

We're collecting your thoughts on the game up through the mission called Rope Burn (the 6th chapter) here on Patreon on Friday, September 6th. We'll read your comments on air. We're recording the first (of two) discussions on Sunday, September 8th at 2pm Central on Twitch. It'll be in the bonus podcast feed for $5 supporters and on YouTube on Monday, September 9th. How Long To Beat has Mirror's Edge at a little over 6 hours to finish. You can play Mirror's Edge on Steam, streaming on PS5, or on Xbox since it's included in Game Pass Ultimate.

Here's the final tally for The Deepest Dive poll, by the way. Better luck next time, Pit! Thank you to everybody who voted for this to happen AND for supporting MinnMax on Patreon and letting us support some of the Game Informer editors who lost their jobs with this format.

I do get motion sickness (Splatoon, Super Monkey Ball and most VR are unplayable for me) but this game didn’t affect me.

Same - once I found this fix on Reddit it worked 👌🏻

I remember this game was coming out at a time when I’d been transferred for work but my wife hadn’t, so my life situation was a combination of three-hour commutes, being on the road for work, and crashing in a sketchy rented room. One of my little comforts when I was stressed at the time was buying video game magazines, even though I barely had time to actually play any games I read about. So while I remember this game being on the cover of EGM and looking cool, I never got around to playing it (even though I’m pretty sure I owned a PS3 copy for a time). So when I heard you guys were doing this it was as good an excuse as any to finally play it. Signed up for a month of EA and got it fired up on the Steam Deck. I expected a decent game, but I can see why it’s become a bit of a cult classic. For someone who is a bit afraid of heights and whose nightmares include falling from towers etc., Mirror’s Edge really nails the thrill. It’s exhilarating to walk right to the edge of a skyscraper and look down on the traffic far below, without the safety net of a game like Spider-Man where you know you can sling a web. It feels so real looking into the Steam Deck as you watch yourself miss a jump and plummet to death through Faith’s eyes while the chaotic sound rises in your ears. I must admit I let myself get hit by the train once just to see what it was like. I definitely can’t play this game right before bed. By the Ropeburn chapter, the story is more vibe than plot, but for a 15-year-old game it seems ahead of its time painting a dystopian near future of surveillance capitalism, violent protests, the decline of trustworthy media, etc. Faith’s line: “It’s not news anymore, it’s advertising” stood out for me. My main criticism is it’s a bit annoying you can’t arrange obstacles or anything like that. I wish it gave you multiple ways to solve a puzzle like build a ramp out of the pallets leaning against a wall etc. I’ve had to seek help on YouTube more times than I’d like to figure out the one annoying move I’m missing. Looking forward to seeing where the game goes in the second half! Pro tip for anyone playing on Steam Deck: turn off the PhysX

Replaying Mirror's Edge for the first time in 10+ years and the game's fun... when it works. There are certain things I have to do 10 times because the game just decides it doesn't feel like grabbing onto a ledge or whatever. I'm not sure how much patience I'm going to have for this.

It’s interesting playing Mirror’s Edge 15 years later and finding it still holds up rather well. It’s not without its flaws, like the poorly implemented combat and sometimes flighty platforming mechanics IMO, but this doesn’t feel all that different from what I play today. Sure there are franchises such as Dying Light that have arguably evolved parkour in gaming. But consider I was doing a replay this old in 2009 when I played Mirror’s Edge originally- I’d be playing Donkey Kong Country or Super Metroid! Can we say we’ve come as far in these last 15 years?

I was looking forward to trying this, it’s a type of game I’m not super familiar with and have been attempting to get more breath of knowledge on gaming. Unfortunately, this game is on a fairly short list of games I’ve bounced off of hard. The platforming and movement feel really clunky, and I’m having a hard time navigating to the right places. Given other comments, I’m sure it’s just a me issue and I look forward to hearing the discussion. Any tips on how to play the game the “right” way to have fun that may make it worth another shot?

When I was younger, I thought the combat should just be excised entirely from Mirror’s Edge. Upon this replay, I now see how that would rob the game of some of its identity. If you’re gonna make a game about being a rebel in an oppressive police state, you’re gonna have to deal with police, sometimes head-on. I’ve also found the combat more manageable this time around, using my environment to block enemy lines of sight until I can get in close to melee them. I still think the guns are poorly implemented, though. The window for disarming enemies seems so short considering the risk of attempting it vs. just using melee. Even if I manage to take a gun, the aiming feels pretty bad on controller and it usually ends up getting me shot. Adding a lock-on feature like in Metroid Prime could’ve elevated the use of guns by removing the need to aim.

The forced combat sections of the game do let it down, but the need for the police to add urgency to the running is required, I just think there is a better balance to be found. Obviously the platforming is the main draw for this game, and it's incredible, especially when you get into a really good flow. This is only diminished when it's confusing which way you have to go and it slows down. The scaffolding sections are the worst for this. The addition of a button to auto-face you in the right direction is genius though and helps alleviate this a little bit.

The police in the game are ruining the game for me. The only enjoyable part of the game so far is in the sewer section where it is more puzzle solving than trying to dodge an overwhelming amount of bullets.

RumbleFish90

Yeah, I found the jumps pretty clunky. This was the first game in a long time that I actually rage quit due to the clunky platforming and overwhelming amount of enemies. I found it much more enjoyable during the platforming puzzle parts

RumbleFish90

I'm surprised how much this game leaves me breathless still all these years later. The sound of faiths shoes hitting the pavement, that lite blurring and speed lines on the edge of the screen, and adjusting where your looking to make sure your not only going to make the jump but time the role. I don't think any other game has managed to evoke these feelings for me. So how are you all finding the platforming of the game? I remember a lot of people complaining about having difficulties catching pipes on jumps at release, but i always had more problems hitting a obstacles with my shoulder and loosing momentum.

RedMption

Was this anyone else's first PC playthrough but you had played it on console before? And if so, did you also get jump scared by those plastic strip curtains? Those weren't in the 360 version so every time I see them now I'm running back and forth through them to play with their physics

Glad to see Mirror's Edge make the cut! The theme for this game has got to be on my list of all-time great video game music. Just hearing it in the menu screen was a face full of nostalgia. So far my biggest surprise after replaying it so far is how much of a learning curve there is to achieving a smooth line through a level. Especially with the rushed nature of the levels so far (often fleeing from or avoiding enemies) it felt like I didn't have time to just do parkour things. I ended up spending some time in time trial mode, which I almost feel is a better version of the game than story mode.

Going through the first half of this game again the thing I was looking for most was how the oppressive police state of mirrors edge expresses itself. The ads elude to difficulty accessing fresh fruits and vegetables, there's mineral supplement ads. The little news stories that scroll in elevators capture this a little bit, but overall it seems like the primary expression of fascism is the presence the police, a freedom to use excessive violence and the general austerity core to the games minimalist aesthetic. Curious if it will feel more apparent in the second half, but so far I'm feeling like mirrors edge is writing some narrative cheques it can't cash. Curious what the crew thinks of the state of the world in mirrors edge.

Bug-Jelly

Am I just bad or does this game feel really clunky? I'm finding the movement so difficult and even basic jumps feel like weird.

Zach

I went out and bought an Xbox 360 since it's not available on ps5, I can't wait to play this game again!

Mason Cowell

had the same issue but now it's running great. I hope someone on the dive is the contrarian...I see how cool the game is, but it's not really clicking for me. Looking forward to the discussion as always!

Russ Aaron

Turn off PhysX or you will have a bad time. Runs great otherwise!

Justin Ray

It is unfortunately no longer available for streaming on ps4 or ps5 :(

PhillyYeetSteak

I'm having difficulty figuring out how to get this on ps5

Pablo Castillo

Just played through the tutorial and a storm swept through the area and knocked out the power. It's playing well on Steam, and my computer is not very good, so I think folks hesitant about their computer being able to handle it should be relieved it's from 2009. The one Downside is that I didn't see the Pure Time Trial DLC on my Steam Copy, but maybe I missed it. It's such an important part of that game to me. But already in the first area my brain is like "Right, I do a wall jump here." And when I look around at the top I notice the drain pipe that you CAN climb to get up there, and had completely forgotten it existed as an option because my brain was so hardwired 10+ years ago to blast through the levels a certain way.

Vilis

I feel like people can't talk about this game without talking about motion sickness. I actually get quite bad motion sickness (can't play psychonauts or metro 2033 at all) but I was able to "stomach" this game. What was your experience like?

pork bun powered

Wow I thought it'd be God Of War!

Tom Brien

I'm proud to be one of the 494 that wanted an excuse to boot mirror's edge on their steam deck!

MechaPig

I can't wait to reopen my save and try to remember what this game was about! Delivering mail? Being a hacker? I couldn't tell you
