2024-09-16 16:08:46 +0000 UTCHey Minn Max crew! I was catching up on older episodes of the podcasts, and during one of the "Get a Load of This" segments, there was a mini quiz of how many controllers the Switch, PS5, and Xbox consoles can support at once. People on the show seemed baffled by who would go beyond the typical 4 player limit on the PS5, and I'm here to say I'm one of the freaks who regularly uses the 8 controller maximum on the Switch and Xbox! (There's also an offical Xbox controller adapter for Windows that allows 8 Xbox controllers to be synced to play PC multiplayer games, and I put that to good use, too!) I have many nieces, nephews, and cousins who all play video games, and some of the most fun I ever have with video games are playing local multiplayer in a big group with them. This leads to my question: do any of you take advantage of features on consoles or PC that would be considered nieche by most other gamers? Thanks for all you do!

2024-08-15 05:28:40 +0000 UTC(Bummer alert) since the closure of GI and the nuking of Arkane Austin I’ve been thinking about the cost of our hobby. In a world where conflict minerals power our miracle machines and labor abuse fuels our silly escapism how do we reckon with ourselves as game and game commentary enjoyers? Obviously you can widen this critique to most things in our world but I suppose my actual question is- are games WORTH the moral price? shout out to Jacob for posting the book 7 Games on his insta story which I think probably provides the best answer.

2024-08-15 05:26:43 +0000 UTCBeing from the UK I was always really happy with the quality of the gaming magazines we had, especially Mean Machines and Official Saturn Magazine. Didn't have too much exposure to GI sadly. No doubt you read some of the 'rival' magazines in the US at the time like EGM when making GI, did you pay any attention to overseas outlets and learn anything from them? Did you ever see something and wonder if they had cribbed anything from your style?

2024-08-14 20:10:56 +0000 UTCHello, Just wanted to say that Martian Gothic is one of my favorite Super Replays and would make a case for it being the best piece of art for the year it came out. I have watched it through at least 3-4 times. I loved the camaraderie displayed between the GI crew in attempting to get through that game, while making it entertaining to viewers. It reminded me of times when I would play through games with my friends and roommates. What was your favorite super replay moment or play through?

2024-08-14 17:46:48 +0000 UTCHey all, game informer felt like one of the few outlets that made an effort to respect and authentically represent games as both an industry and artform. I belive such efforts are important to the cultural impact and the continuing evolution of the medium, but with both mass layoffs, studio closures, and games journalism outlets being closed, if feels like we are moving backwards. What do you think the future of games journalism looks like and what role will it play for the future of the industry and artform?

2024-08-14 08:13:09 +0000 UTCHi everyone, I've loved the magazine since I started reading it back in the early 2000's and I'll miss that monthly blast of joy when I got the lastest issue in the mail. Considering how many cover stories GI had over the decades (!), what is a game each of you wish you GI did a cover story on and why?

2024-08-14 06:57:56 +0000 UTCI know this is kind of a cheat to two unrelated questions but generally would love to know. I wish I could ask all of my beloved veterans and seeing as how I don’t know which veterans will be present during the podcast I’ll limit to each hopefully just answering separately. What has been the most proud piece of work that you have done for GI? Which has been your worst back lash for a review or article? What do you miss most about working together? Also please please please… how was your first and last day working for Game Informer and the emotions you dealt with those days? Sorry for so many questions there’s so much I’d love to want to know. I’m truly torn apart and have been listening and reading your magazines for such a long time. I would have never been able to even experience or buy games such as Buoshock, Dead Space, Little Big Planet, and so much more. I truly will be hesitant in the future on giving some games a chance without your work. Thank you to all the work you have all done! I wish you nothing but the best careers and lives. To all of you. Thank you Ben Hanson! I have followed your medium since you started Minnmax and what you’re doing for GI is nothing short of light in such a dark time. I never thought I’d be so emotional over a game magazine but also being intertwined with your podcast and videos it makes me feel like a part of the team and it is a shame that this has happened. Best regards to all of you and I’ll try to give as much support as I can.

2024-08-14 06:38:18 +0000 UTCGreetings all, Thank you all so much for the amazing work that you put in at GI. The magazine was an important part of my young adult and adult life. If there were a museum erected in Minnesota, let’s call it The Game Informer Museum, what experiences or exhibits would you want in it? I would definitely hope that in the midst of all of the exhibits there would be one of those theater rooms that would have “the best moments” of the GI show playing on it, especially the clip where Ben and friend blew kisses at each other for almost a solid 30 seconds.

2024-08-14 04:25:49 +0000 UTCHey y’all, just wanted to let you guys know how much GI meant to me through out the years. It wasn’t until I started reading Game Informer that I started to think about games not just as a entertainment medium, but a artistic one as well and thus, over the years, changed my view on art as a concept and how video games fit into that mold along with literature and film. Thank you all for your hard work and dedication to making this industry one not to be ignored and not just for nerds.

2024-08-14 03:43:55 +0000 UTCGreetings all! I am still heartbroken that GameStop shut down the Game Informer magazine, but I want to share one feeling I have with you all – GI was more than just a magazine, website, podcast, YouTube channel, etc… GI wasn’t the content you produced - it was the relationship you formed with the community. I’ve never heard a single story like, “I met so and so from GI, and they were actually kind of a dick.” Every story is about how you were all super cool and gracious and how much you appreciated all of us for sharing the journey of games with you, whether on camera or in print. That’s something that corporate bigwigs cannot shut down – it’s persisted through cutbacks and layoffs, and it’ll persist through this. No matter where you go, you’ll always have our support. My question is what was your favorite memory of meeting with members of the GI community? Is there any specific memory that represents the spirit of the GI community? Love you all equally, Dave
Knobby Buckles (Dave)
2024-08-14 03:42:04 +0000 UTCWhat was your most memorable non-gaming moment at Game Informer? Was it someone you met, something you got to see or do, something else that only happened because of GI? 2024-08-14 01:05:58 +0000 UTCHello crew! GI's was so entertaining with the online stuff and podcasts, replay etc. But was also so great because it truly lived up to informing us about games and getting us to check out new things and genres we may not have otherwise. Was there a specific game/series or genre that you became a fan of because of coverage you did for it in some capacity that you may not have otherwise got into if not for your job at GI?

2024-08-14 00:58:55 +0000 UTCGI taught me that actual people were behind video game reviews and that those reviews represented individual reviewers opinions. Learning about different writers tastes by reading their work was always one of my favorite parts of being a longtime reader. And sure Game Informer giving Resident Evil 6 an 8.75 might sound strange but Tim Turi giving it such a high score just makes perfect sense! That being said, are there any contentious reviews that members of the panel would have scored differently? Thanks for everything

2024-08-14 00:17:36 +0000 UTCGrowing up, my local grocery store had a magazine shelf and they used to carry Game Informer. I knew my mother would never buy me one so while she shopped I would thumb through as many pages as I could to try to absorb the goodness but with the Halo 2 cover story in 2004 I took it too far. My friend group was in a Halo frenzy hungry for any news about the sequel so I brought a notebook and pen to Food Lion. I wrote down as much as I could while my mother perused the isles. I proudly presented the list of multiplayer features to my friends who circled around me in class with wide eyes open mouths. I felt like a gaming knowledge god! So…I did it again…and again. Game after game…telling everyone my stolen gaming facts with reckless abandon. I am sorry I did this to you. Do you think GI could’ve survived had I just kept my notebook at home? Thank you so much for the memories. Helluva run.

Do you have a favorite or memorable canceled game that you were able to preview or perhaps a favorite piece of exclusive merch from a canceled game? For myself, in a programming class in high school we were taken to a game development studio where the ultimately canceled MMO Stargate Worlds was being developed. We got a brief tour of the studio, a demo of the game in development, and a cool poster that I still have up in my house to this day. It was a cool experience and the novelty of having a poster for a game that was never released has always tickled me.

They already spat on the legacy, let em have it! I want a full minute of bleeped podcast. Again, thanks for the great writing and videos. What made me a constant viewer were the personalities, and it amazed me up until the end that Game Informer kept finding nice people that fit right into the group. 2024-08-13 20:34:42 +0000 UTCHuge thanks to everyone at GI over its 33 year history for the immeasurable impact you had on the industry and a community of gamers. My local mom and pop gaming store in Richmond, VA was giving away piles of old Game Informer magazines that were thrown in with a huge recent trade-in last week, so I went by to pick some up as a way to grieve / celebrate your impact. One of the issues I picked up was the 300th Issue, within which Game Informer staff chose the definitive Top 300 Games of All Time. Here's a little quiz game! I'll name two games and you tell me which was listed higher on the Top 300 List! Round One DOOM, (#13), or Red Dead Redemption (#8) Round Two Bloodborne (#32), or The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (#39) Round Three Star Wars: KOTOR (#55), or Super Mario Brothers (#66) Round Four Metal Gear Solid 2 (#138), or Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 (#109) Round Five Mario's Picross (#248), or Wii Sports (#299)

2024-08-13 19:42:07 +0000 UTCHey GI! First I just wanted to say thank you for all of the amazing content over the years, I have so many fond memories of laying on the couch as a kid and POURING over every article/screenshot, truly some of the fondest memories I have (especially waiting to see what the 12-31 super replay was going to be each year). For my question, I’m wondering what you regret not getting a chance to do most while at GI (maybe it was a trip you were looking forward to that never materialized, a cover story that never worked out, etc.). Wishing you all the best.
John
2024-08-13 19:40:22 +0000 UTCAll of the Former GI editors are put into a colosseum and forced to fight for honor and glory! Who will reign supreme and become the champion of the Game Informer Death Battle Deluxe? (For arguments sake no one is actually hurt in the battle. When defeated they just reappear in the stands of the colosseum, and everyone stays friends.)

2024-08-13 19:31:38 +0000 UTCHello, no question but I just want to say thank you GI. I started listening more to you guys because game trailers had shutdown and you guys had everything! From test chamber to putting Tim Turi to playing awful games like blue stinger ! I was following when Dan Ryckert was still there. Saw Andy McNamara leave, Andy Reiner take the reins. All those amazing tournaments you guys did! The amazing Dan tack and his love for blazers and of course Dark Souls. The amazing voice Matt Helgson. The iconic duo of Tim and Ben! Thank you for all the memories truly!!!

2024-08-13 19:20:58 +0000 UTCHello! I have loved gameinformer for years. Thank all of you for making that magazine and website for so many years. I have been a huge fan of the gameinformer show. I started listening in 2015, I have gone back and listened to that years episodes a ton for the nostalgia. Is there a specific period of time at gameinformer that you look back on with the most nostalgia?

2024-08-13 19:19:46 +0000 UTCI once had a dream that Game Informer’s Matt Miller screamed at while using the bathroom at the GI office. He was upset that I was using “his” urinal. I wrote into the show about my dream when it happened and Ben read it on air. Everyone had a good laugh but I’m still haunted by Matt Miller’s fiery red face screaming at me while trying to wash my hands and quickly leave. What seemingly delightful person has been mean to you in either real life or a dream?

2024-08-13 19:15:36 +0000 UTCHey guy, what did it feel like to see gameinformer evolve from a strictly print media to something more audio/video based? Was that transition from writer to video game pundit/personality hard for you?

2024-08-13 19:05:42 +0000 UTCHey y’all! I loved reading GameInformer as a kid, and I think reading your work when I was younger helped me become an English teacher now! My question is what was your writing process for the magazine? Did you just shoot from the hip or did you have a specific routine to writing? And did y’all have a GameInformer style-guide with a set structure and do’s and don’ts or did you let each writer do their own thing? And really thank you for your work with GameInformer. Growing up with very little money meant most of my gaming childhood was lived vicariously through your writing. I hope you know how many lives you’ve positively impacted with your work!

2024-08-13 18:59:09 +0000 UTCOne of the reasons GI was so special was the cover stories and the time you spent with developers on their games. Were there any crazy secrets or unannounced games from a cover story trip you can now talk about that you had to sit on?

2024-08-13 18:51:23 +0000 UTCI have been using a subscription to Game Informer for the last 15 years in my classroom. It helps for reluctant readers who like the idea of reading about videogames. 2024-08-13 18:50:26 +0000 UTCAs a former intern, I always wondered whether our work really benefitted Game Informer in any big way or if the main reason for the internship was to educate the future generation of games journalists even if it made things a bit less efficient. What were the biggest challenges/advantages to running the GI internship and do you have any favorite memories of interactions with interns? (P.S. I’ll always be incredibly thankful to Jeff Cork and Ben Reeves for mentoring me and everyone else during my time there. Not only are they great teachers, they’re great people as well!)

2024-08-13 18:38:15 +0000 UTCHey folks, Obligatory, sorry to witness the end of GI. Best of luck on everyone's future endeavors. 2024-08-13 18:36:52 +0000 UTCA conversation in the discord where I (somewhat flippantly) called penultimate one of my top 10 favorite words, got me thinking about what those 10 might actually be. What words would be in your top 10? (Also, for any who don’t know and are curious, penultimate means the second best (like hitman freelancer was last year) or second to last of something (like crossing off the second to thing on a to do list)

2024-08-13 18:35:36 +0000 UTCHey all! Glad to see that Fields of Mistria is being so well received. Seems like they have a lot of nice quality of life features that keep to core spirit of farm sims, but make it all just a little bit smoother, so have a related question! Is there a feature or gameplay change that happened in a sequel/spiritual successor that drastically changed the genre? Keeping the same mechanics can be great, but sometime it just leads to not as great gameplay. My first thought was pinging being introduced in Apex Legends, then quickly to all other FPS games, but I'm sure there are other examples.

2024-08-13 18:33:15 +0000 UTCFirst off a thank you to all the GI vets for all your work over the years. GI had been a part of my day for close to 20 years between the website, the magazine, and the podcast. This shut down has truly been a loss for the industry and the overwhelming sense of loss is because you all made GI great. A sincerest Thank You. As a fan for so long I couldn’t help but fear for the future of GI over the past couple years. For those the left on their own and even for those laid off in the past few years, what was your "writing on the wall" or what were you able to see about the future of GI from the outside? Did you know it would be 5 or 10 years until GI was no more? I am sure optimism existed in some form that GI could thrive under GameStop or would go on maybe out from underneath them. Especially for someone like Kyle or Wes who rejoined GI, what was the level of hope to make something great that would thrive juxtaposed to the reality of what we have seen GameStop do in the market?
Preston Determan
2024-08-13 18:32:51 +0000 UTCI always thought it’d be fun to have an activities page in Game Informer with things like crosswords, fill in the blank, and spot-the-difference (basically, a page of video game Highlights magazine). Was there ever an “out there” feature you pitched or wished for, but it was deemed too weird or off-brand?

2024-08-13 18:30:42 +0000 UTCThis question is for the former GI crew given that they’ve probably seen more games than anyone: who has the best logo screen when opening a game? It can be the art, name, or chime of the music that get you. Personally, I love the ambient piano keys in older Bethesda games like Oblivion. How about you?

2024-08-13 18:18:31 +0000 UTCLong time listener, first time poster (even for the GI show back in the day!) First of all I wanted to say that GI had a huge impact on my gaming life. It’s the reason why I got into so many of many favorite series, including Persona 3 when it was featured in the top 50 back in the day. This was especially impactful as GI was one of the very few english gaming magazines we got here in the middle east during the 2000s, unlike today where the hobby is widely beloved and even start eSport teams over it. My question is: what are your favorite specific memories of gaming media that inspired YOU to go in the industry? Appreciate you all, and thanks for the memories.

2024-08-13 18:17:40 +0000 UTCHey, MinnMax! It was a really nice surprise to hear that Tango Gameworks and the team that made Hi-Fi Rush was picked up by Krafton so they can keep making games together. 2024-08-13 18:15:16 +0000 UTCHello, The issue that got me to subscribe to GameInformer was the 2004 (135) Metroid Prime 2 Echoes cover story (still have it!). At the time I only had a N64 and Gamecube so Nintendo games were my main interest. I remember thinking these guys don't like Nintendo because of how rare it was for them to get featured. What other misconceptions do you think people had over the years about featuring Nintendo games on GI? or what was the hardest game to get Nintendo to approve to GameInformer? Thank you for all the memories and amazing stories over the years.

2024-08-13 18:14:58 +0000 UTCNo question, just a hearty thank you to all the GI editors and writers throughout the magazine's history. I still remember stumbling upon the Super Replay of Cyberia, a game that absolutely mystified me as a kid. I've never felt so vindicated as I felt watching seasoned video game veterans wrestle hopelessly with that game's baffling decisions and opaque controls -- and have fun doing it. I remember thinking, this group gets it -- and I was a loyal follower from that moment on. It's an incredible testament to GI and its culture that over a decade later, even after all of the people on that stream had moved on, that feeling of fun, wholesome camaraderie remained. That feels like something everyone who passed through the GI doors (real or virtual) played a part in, and I hope you all carry that pride with you forever.

2024-08-13 18:14:31 +0000 UTCHello Game Informer editors, Gaming is everywhere now and almost everybody games in one way or another, whether that be on mobile or console. However, it was a significantly more niche medium when the magazine first started. Can you reflect on seeing gaming become more mainstream and universally accepted throughout the history of the magazine and your tenure in it and how that changed people's perception of the magazine and even your job when they found out what you do.

2024-08-13 18:13:46 +0000 UTCI recently went back to school to finish up my Writing degree, one that I was hoping to use at a place like Game Informer. But with the shuttering of it, Waypoint, and dozens of other bigger & smaller outlets, seems that career path is way less viable. So, what do you all think are viable alternatives to working in games journalism? I've heard "just do work on your own site" but what kind of work? How frequently? Should we build up additional hosting, video editing, or podcasting skills as well? Or are there other gaming journalism adjacent careers you all would recommend? I understand many move into PR or marketing, what would help with that? Hope answers to this can help other people asking themselves the same question as well. Appreciate everything you all have done for GI, it's memory will live on forever!

2024-08-13 18:12:29 +0000 UTCI'm a designer and creative director, so I really appreciate how Game Informer's covers let the artwork shine instead of crowding it out with text and spot illustrations. I know that wasn't always the case (to my eye, covers were more busy up to 2004). What factors influenced GI's approach to covers over time? Were there particular covers that felt like breakthroughs in terms of establishing the magazine's identity?

2024-08-13 18:09:02 +0000 UTCHey Minnmax and GI crew! Loved the magazine and the video content you all made so much! Big fan of the super replay showdowns and was blown away by the creativity and committment with Replay Civil War. What was it like putting that whole thing together? 2024-08-13 18:08:01 +0000 UTCHello all, Did Kato actually like reviewing sports games year after year? And thank you to the whole GI alumni for impacting so many of us. I was a huge fan of The GI Show for so many years. I particularly loved the Hanson and McNamara eras. I wrote in so many times and even had to teach Hanson how to pronounce my hometown of Gloucester, which was followed up by Joe Juba roasting Ben for not knowing. I always would cheer and laugh at the extremely long episodes that Andy always said he was going to stop doing and never did. Good times. Cheers.

2024-08-13 18:07:45 +0000 UTCHey all! Following up on that very important Brussels sprout discourse from last week, I feel it’s important to share that Brussels sprouts objectively used to taste worse! In the late 90s, scientists discovered that there were specific chemicals (glucosinolates) that gave Brussels sprouts a bitter taste. Through the work of cross-breeding, plant scientists successfully created a new type without those chemicals, making them more palatable. Preparation definitely matters (I’ll take a sautéed sprout over boiled mush any day), but when you hear someone complain about the taste of Brussels sprouts when they were a kid, that’s because they were actually, empirically worse back then.

For me, it is hearing Joe Jubas story about missing fireworks one time and him saying "No fireworks for Joseph" Which has slightly changed over the years in my head, whenever some one is mock disappointed I just think "No Fireworks for Juba" in that same tone he had back in the day. 2024-08-13 18:05:16 +0000 UTCHey Game Informer! One of my favorite cover stories back in the day was the one for inFamous 2 where the main character looked completely different from the final game. Same with the Borderlands cover story where the art style completely changed. Has there ever been a cover story that showed something from a game that ended up looking completely different in the final game that you found particularly interesting? 2024-08-13 18:00:31 +0000 UTCHey all! One thing that always stood out to me in the years I read Game Informer was the feature writing. I always felt the way the game was described was often narrativized in such a vivid way. Often, previews nowadays online can stick to merely describing mechanics pretty dryly, and there was something about Game Informer features that was so much more descriptive of what the game was like while also being so much more fun to read. It was great getting a sense of the voice of the writer and that personalized experience with the game. Would love to know about that editorial process and decision-making in that kind of writing. Always stuck out to me. Thanks!

2024-08-13 17:59:10 +0000 UTCI figured I would resubmit my question this week since Ben read my name but not my question on the podcast last week! 😂 Hello GameinnMaxers, I am so sad to hear the horrible news about game informer being closed. I still have a vivid memory of reading my first issue about Farcry 2. The writing of the article made it so easy to picture the game and I had to go out and buy the game. On top of that, I would never had found Minnmax and this great community if it weren't for the gameinformer show. Thanks for all the in depth reporting over the years! I can't wait to see what this outlet turns itself into. My question is what cover story trip changed your perspective or permanently endeared you to a particular game?
