2024-06-07 19:28:27 +0000 UTCHey MinnesotaMaximums! Remember the first time you played a FPS with dual sticks? Perhaps this only applies to a slightly older audience but for me it was on my PlayStation 2 in 2000 playing the first Time Splitters on release week. I got the ps2 for my birthday, which was one of the most magical memories I have. I booted it up and for the life of me couldn't wrap my mind around it— hated the dual stick layout at first. This was in a time where all FPS games were played with a single joystick or the d-pad. I even had my dad call PlayStation support to ask if there was a way to disable this option and they said no. My question is: will video games ever pivot away from using twin sticks in FPS games? Maybe a third stick one day?! Just joined the Patreon and will be submitting a question each week now! I’ve been listening to MinnMax since day 1, and love the show!

2024-06-05 16:29:42 +0000 UTCGreetings Minnmaxers, Are indies going to slowly usurp AAA+ games as entities start to go independent per the recent amount of studio closings? Not in terms of revenue really, but releases.

2024-06-05 12:39:15 +0000 UTCHello everyone! I was just thinking about remakes and how happy I am about them. I played plenty games growing up and I also missed plenty. I played the Mass Effect trilogy and dead space for my first times when they came back out. Mass Effect hit so well for me and Dead Space didn’t. I’m sorry Janet I’m the odd one out here but I honestly thought Callisto protocol was better. What was a game train you guys missed out on and for better or worse got you excited to see come back around? Metal Gear Solid here I come!

2024-06-05 11:54:03 +0000 UTCHey everyone (hello Kyle!), what is your relationship with printers ? I've never had a safe, secure and comfy relationship with any of the printers I've owned. 2024-06-05 05:33:23 +0000 UTCHey y'all! What's your favorite needle drop on a game? The Snake Eater ladder climb and Death Stranding's beginning (Don't Be so Serious by Low Roar is an all-time great) come to mind. Also P.S. related to last week's comment on Mario or Link being the deadliest, it could be possible for Mario to be the winner, considering Papa Miyamoto clarified that Mario is the same character in every single game, whereas Link is a different person on almost each game. All the best, cheers!

2024-06-05 04:01:44 +0000 UTCHey guys, first time writing in I believe. I can not emphasize how strange it was for me having in recent months returned to One Piece and hearing Kyle state the literal exact same point in the show that I am in. 2024-06-05 00:14:01 +0000 UTCHey Ben and Crew! First time Patron/long time listener! I'm currently playing through the Metal Gear Solid series for the first time via the recently released Vol. 1 collection! I've finished MGS1 and I'm nearly done with MGS2. My question is: Wait for MGS Delta or play MGS3 via the collection? Are there any particulars, at least with what little we know from Delta, that might make waiting worth it compared to the original experience? When it comes to remastered/remade games of beloved originals, does the crew have a set standard of always playing the original first or is it a game by game basis for y'all? For example, the Demon Souls remake and Final Fantasy 7 Remake/Rebirth were my first experiences with either title. Thanks!

2024-06-04 23:52:26 +0000 UTCI just want to highlight a joke "home run" from last week's episode. When you guys were talking about Isaiah's new Twitter bot that he's creating to find and showcase games that garner overwhelming postive reviews on Steam in last week's GALOT. Jeffm mentioned that you all will be out of jobs, to which Hanson responded, "Don't you mean extinct?" Chef's kiss my good sir. Bonus joke points since you mentioned Huber quoting random movies on the Easy Allies podcast earlier in the episode.

2024-06-04 23:30:18 +0000 UTCThe talk of dreams on the bonus pod got me thinking if others in the MinnMax crew have very vivid dreams. My wife has extremely vivid dreams. She can recall whole A-plots and B-plots and describes them in a lot of detail. However I remember maybe 1 a month. BUT a couple times a month I get extreme Deja Vu in my waking life and the only possible explanation I can think of (which also doesn’t make sense) is that I dreamt this scenario before and it’s seeping into my consciousness. Does anybody else get Deja Vu regularly or have extremely vivid dreams?

2024-06-04 22:42:18 +0000 UTCHey Minnmax, Bread here, what's something from video games that gave you a strange personal expectation of how life or the world works over the years? 2024-06-04 22:03:03 +0000 UTCHi Minnmax, there was a question a couple weeks ago someone wrote in about going on a potential date with someone who was tall and how to talk about it without being weird or creepy. It reminded me of a funny story with me and my girlfriend: a couple months into our relationship she admitted to me that she's been crouching slightly when we hugged because she didn't want me to feel bad that she was taller than me. I found this odd because I could've sworn that, while we were both around the same height, I was taller. After doing a quick pencil mark on the wall of both our heights we found out I was right, but she still has it as a running joke that she's taller. My question form this: have you ever had a perception about some aspect reality that you believed to be true for a long period of time, only for it to be proven wrong immediately when you speak it out loud?

2024-06-04 21:30:28 +0000 UTCHey Minnmax, I need to vent! This weekend I undertook a multiple hour run to the deep zone in Pacific Drive. It was a late game story mission that climaxed in an intense checkpoint chase. After achieving my goal, all I had to do was warp back home. Simple enough, right? Well, after exiting the car to activate the gateway, a bug caused me to be teleported to the top of a nearby antenna. My only option is to jump down, where I’m left with 1% health — I die from radiation before I can heal myself. Mission failed, hours lost, resources gone. It’s the closest I’ve come in years to rage quitting a game. So, now that you’ve allowed me to process these emotions, what are your most frustrating game moments?

2024-06-04 21:12:03 +0000 UTCHey Minn Max, What criteria, if any, do you hold yourself to when putting together your PERSONAL "Top 10 Favorite Video Games of All Time" list? 2024-06-04 19:16:59 +0000 UTCSince there is a good spectrum of rogue enjoyers this week, I thought I'd ask: Do you think the recent surge in rogue popularity is because people often don't have time for larger, longer games? I find picking up games like Witcher 3, GoW Ragnarök, etc. daunting because I don't have time, and the feedback loops I'm searching for both mechanically and narratively are served just as well (if not better) in examples like Balatro and Hades (II). Do you think this is also reflected in the market shift overall in that big AAA titles come with more risk per 'shot' whereas indie and AA games can take more chances with less relative risk?

This means that before you attempt some dangerous stunt, you have to interact with it first. For me, while the logical answer is my cell phone, I think I would actually choose to pet my cat. 2024-06-04 17:49:59 +0000 UTCHi Ben, Kyle, Janet, Jacob, Last week on the podcast I found myself screaming at iPhone while the group was trying to figure out which Call of Duty game Gary Oldman played besides Black Ops 1. It got me thinking though: big Hollywood celebrities have increasingly been collaborating or acting in games and this could be a fun game to play. I’ll list the celebrity and you tell me if they have voiced a video game character. Bonus points if you can name the game they stared in. Elijah Wood (Yes, Spiro most famously but also Psychonauts 2, the Lord of the Rings official video games, God of War III, Broken Age) Sir Patrick Stewart (Y, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, Castelvania Lords of Shadow, My Memory of Us, X-Men Legends II) Ryan Reynolds (the Mint Mobile guy) (Not that I could find) Matthew McConaughey (I’m going to say no because Exodus isn’t out yet but Ben can choose to award points) Halle Berry (N, the Catwomen Video game was voiced by Jennifer Hale) Liam Neeson (yes, fallout 3) Matthew Perry (Y, Fallout New Vegas) Tom Hanks (No, his brother voices woody in the video games) Harrison Ford (No) Martin Sheen (Yes mass effect 2 and 3 as the illusive man) Burt Reynolds (Yes saints row 3) John Goodman (Yes, id’s FPS game Rage) Christopher Walken (yes, Ripper) Samuel L. Jackson (yes, GTA San Andreas) Kristen Bell (y, Assassins Creed 1) Julianne Moore (No)

2024-06-04 17:08:40 +0000 UTCWhen it released I rented Eternal Darkness. Over the last few weeks, I have finally restarted and finished it! That game ruled! I’m bummed we’ll never get the planned sequel since Silicon Knights went bankrupt long ago. What is a planned game sequel that never got released that you think would’ve been a hit?

2024-06-04 17:07:59 +0000 UTCHey folks, can we be excited for PSVR2 for a second? The PC Adapter is coming out on August 7th so that I'll finally be able to play Half-Life Alyx with my headset. A new vr game, Behemoth is getting some great previews. Synapse and RE4 remake are on my backlog for VR--it's not like I've run out of VR experiences to play! Specifically for Jacob, who's impressions about RE4 remake hurt my soul, Behemoth is giving off Shadow of the Colossus/Dark Souls in VR vibes. I think I'd just like to hear a solid, heart-felt "woo-hoo!" from everyone for the current direction of the PSVR2. Thanks.

2024-06-04 17:07:53 +0000 UTCHave you heard of the enshittification cycle (https://www.ft.com/content/6fb1602d-a08b-4a8c-bac0-047b7d64aba5)? How do you think this process might be impacting Xbox GamePass and other similar services, and how do you see that rippling across the whole industry as the Netflix model proliferates across indie and first-party gaming?

2024-06-04 17:04:02 +0000 UTCHow many games does a developer have to make before the general public considers them an "auteur"? While folks like Sakurai and Kojima seem like a lock, devs with fewer releases like Lucas Pope and Sam Barlow also seem to fit the description since all their games feel like they're coming from a central point of view. And beyond the level of output, how much does the type of games and the size of the teams they work with factor into how we think about game developers and authorship?

2024-06-04 17:03:06 +0000 UTCHey, MinnMax! Has your GOTY for any given year ever changed? I was looking back at previous years where my GOTY at the time and my favorite game from that year now are very different. For example, my personal GOTY in 2016 was Overwatch but looking back now would be Inside. Thanks for all you do!

2024-06-04 17:01:10 +0000 UTCHello all, The sales success of video games is measured by the number of units sold, not the money earned. Why is the box office success of movies measured in money earned and not the number of tickets sold? When I see a headline saying, X movie set new box office record besting Y movie, I think, well, ticket prices have gone up since then, so yeah. The stat-lover in me wants to know the true box office kings. It drives me nuts!

2024-06-04 16:57:32 +0000 UTCHey pals, I found myself trying out Diablo IV on game pass and rather enjoying it so far. However, it’s not a game I would normally gravitate towards since I’m typically playing weird indies, story driven games, or games with less stat based combat. What’s a game you really like but that also contradicts your normal taste in games? Thanks for all you do, much love from Tennessee

2024-06-04 16:57:11 +0000 UTCWhat would happen if the next Naughty Dog game sucked? What if its Metacritic score landed in the low 70's or below? We know that Sony cares deeply about the critical reception of its tentpole single-player titles, and it feels like with lengthening dev times and numerous studio closures Sony is creating a situation where a lot of the justification for the Playstation brand's existence is balancing on fewer and fewer of these key titles. So if a hugely anticipated game bombs and there is a year+ gap until a game of comparable magnitude is ready, would this push Sony into a different direction? How do you think the company would handle this scenario?

2024-06-04 16:53:46 +0000 UTCIs playstation losing it's identity? it's vibe? it's SOUL?!? The PS1 has it's 90's edgy vibes that made nintendo look like a dumb baby console. The PS2 evolved into a sleeker style with experimental ad campaigns and tons of new franchises. But then I feel like with the PS3 onward a specific schtick for the consoles started to fade. While I've enjoyed my PS5, it really only has sad dad walking sims as it's main unique feature, and even those are coming to PC at an accelerating rate. Nintendo has a stronger brand than ever, and seems to be focusing on epic, nintendo-style exclusives as it's entire future. Is Sony doomed?

2024-06-04 16:52:41 +0000 UTCHello CLCs, I have recently been playing and loving both KOTOR and the original Alan Wake and I am really loving how much they feel like old games. From the goofy voice acting to janky mechanics, these games are so unique and comfortable with what they are doing well. This has me thinking... Apart from nostalgia, what are the elements of old games that keep you coming back or going back to play them for a first time?

2024-06-04 16:50:06 +0000 UTCHi friends! I recently played through the delightful claymation indie game “Harold Halibut” on Game Pass. The game features practical models and sets scanned into the digital via photogrammetry. I was constantly struck by the level of detail and artistry that had been poured into the game by a 12 person team over a 12 year development process. What games have most captivated you with their level of craft and artistic complexity?

2024-06-04 16:47:16 +0000 UTCHey MinnMax, in regards to the conversation of Mario’s kill count vs Link’s, I was screaming “Super Mario Maker x3!” A game that definitely rivals the body count of Hyrule warriors and then some due to the online nature of the games. Then add in the RPGs and Mario Parties, Mario is a threat to the Mushroom Kingdom’s sentient life with his high kill count.

2024-06-04 16:44:58 +0000 UTCWhat non-profit/charity organizations are you passionate about and why? I got involved in TNR (trap neuter return) of community cats 12 years ago now because of a bunch of feral and stray cats living behind my then apartment complex. Since then, I have been involved with a few different animal rescue organizations and always have a soft spot in my heart for stray cats 💜
