I just listened to the Hamilton soundtrack for the first time and I thought it was alright. I would argue against the GWOAT but that's not my goal here. I wanted to see if anyone is familiar with the film 1776 (also a Broadway musical). It's got William Daniels (who some may know as Mr Feeny) as an angry, sweaty John Adams belting out bangers like Piddle Twiddle. It's one of my Ma's favorites so we watched it a lot growing up XD

I am not a fan of most musicals and hip-hop/rap are not my favorite music genre; but despite my interests and the fact that I've never seen Hamilton, I believe it may be in my second favorite musical of all time. Thank you for doing a Hamilton episode, this will be my first episode of MinnTrax. I am a life-long musical theatre fan, and what I love about this show and soundtrack is how clearly it is both influenced by the legacy of musicals and contemporary music. There are references to the West Wing "I'm looking for a mind a work," Notorious BIG "If you don't know, now you know..." and The Pirates of Penzance "I am a model of a modern major general" just to name a few. What is so great about these references and nods to other works is that it isn't meant to be impressive, it just shows that Lin-Manuel Miranda has a love of a wide variety of art and music, and he lets it make his work even better.

With the rising popularity of Hamilton and the continued relevance of its message, what musical definitely deserves a second look?

Did you know that Lin Manuel is cousins with famous Puerto Rican rapper Residente, famous for the group Calle 13? Hello! Can we have a discussion about how the entire musical (the greatest work of all time) ends it’s final moment on a unison note? Do you think that the solidarity of all voices becoming one is symbolic?

I saw Hamilton and thought it was incredibly insipid. There wasn't nearly as much hip-hop as I thought there was going to be and the set was the same for the entire show. I get the feeling that it really appealed to theater nerds who want to be the kind of people that like hip-hop, but don't actually like it. Is Hamilton the most overrated art of all time?
