Dr. Who Reaction 15x1 The Robot Revolution

Sorry you guys, I thought I had uploaded the reaction already. Have been sick this week, and kinda forgot, to do everything it takes, so that you can watch the episode. Really sorry.

Dr. Who Reaction 15x1 The Robot Revolution

Comments

"My name is Sasha 55, and on behalf of all Missbelindachandrakind, I bid welcome to our one true Queen" ... "Please help us.", Sasha 55, "The Robot Revolution" Perhaps not the most riveting of stories - and as you pointed out, we get Martha Jones-vibes with a competent medical character. Belinda even goes on to fix a dislocated arm, like Martha did once. But the most obvious issue - we've called back an actor who had a role in the previous season - just like we did with Freema. And in both cases they didn't hide the fact - each characters was related to the actor's previous incarnation. It remains to be seen what happens with it though. "If you travel to that star, it's four quadrillion miles away. I know girls aren't good at maths, but that's a long way.", Alan Budd, "The Robot Revolution" I didn't like Alan from his very first condescending line, so it didn't worry me that he turned out to be the antagonist and I didn't project his world-view onto all computer gamers. "So, what it means is, that star, that's yours. That star, right there. Shining down upon us.", Alan Budd, "The Robot Revolution" The star certificate is dated 5 April 2008 - that's the date "Partners in Crime" was shown on TV. I don't think that's significant though. "I swear you can trust this man. He came to us as a stranger and in just six months, I have learnt to trust him with my life. Take her home, Doctor. Then take me to the stars.", "That is a date.", Sasha 55 and the Doctor, "The Robot Revolution" I get Kate Lethbridge-Stewart vibes from Sasha 55, with her firm and clear handling of the resistance to the Robots. Actually, I think that if Sasha 55 had lived, she would probably sacrifice her travels with the Doctor and decide to stay behind on he world and clean up the mess. "Robots - faulty - cannot - hear - every - ninth - word.", The Doctor, "The Robot Revolution" That reminds me of a BBC series from the 1970s about prisoners of war in World War 2. There was an episode a writer tried to smuggle out information home in a book he had written using a code where every ninth word was the text to be read - I wonder if RTD recalls that episode. "Polish, polish.", Cleaner Bot, "The Robot Revolution" Just like the cute "Gadget, gadget" robot from "The Waters of Mars". I find these story similarities sweet because it reminds me of the, now, substantial history of New Who. "I am not one of your adventures. Now I'm asking you, Doctor, to do the right thing.", "I will take you home.", Belinda and the Doctor, "The Robot Revolution" I don't really mind our new potential companion being reluctant to join the Doctor on his future adventures. It is nice to explore all motivations for characters who travel with the Doctor. And a reluctant companion is not unheard of in Doctor Who history. Just thinking about the episodes you've seen, we have Ian and Barbara, the school teachers from Earth in "An Unearthly Child", being locked in the TARDIS and whisked away to another time without their permission - and they spent the next few stories demanding to be returned home. Tegan Jovanka, who you've seen in "Kinda" and "The Black Orchid", wandered into the TARDIS because she wanted to contact someone - and spend most of a season saying she wanted to go home. And even in New Who we can recall Jackie Tyler in "Army of Ghosts", perhaps not an official companion, but she was dragged off to Torchwood headquarters against her will. Or consider Martha Jones in ... (can you recall it?) ... Martha Jones in "The Doctor's Daughter" had a life back on Earth and didn't want to travel with the Doctor again. "Apparently, I'm the Queen of Outer Space, if you could tell the police. And my mum and dad ... Oh, my poor mum and dad. Tell them Robots are kidnapping me. Tell them I love them.", "Oh, take care, Belinda. Bye, bye!", Belinda and Mrs Flood, "The Robot Revolution" The more and more mysterious Mrs Flood!

Please look into your PM´s. :)

I have indeed heard, that Disney has kicked Dr. Who. And if it is not picked up by a new Network, it´ll be the last Series for the show. I´ve also heard that Russel T.Davis will not write for Dr. Who anymore, and that this makes it even harder for the show to be picked up by any other Network in the future. I really hope the rumors are false though.

Ahh, I first started watching when 4x1 aired. Still here! Also speaking of people dropping off on your Patreon, I have to drop off aswell due to my financial situation changing but I will always support you over on YouTube! And yes I suppose it makes sense that some people would drop off during episodes they don't like and blah blah, but I hope it makes you feel a little better that alot of us are also here for you specifically and not just the episodes. So bizarre that its been so long since you started watching Doctor Who, its weird that we're already here on the current series and now you have to wait like the rest of us! Cant wait for your future reactions as per usual. :)

I do have a lot to say about the episode but also some of the things you said at the beginning. I wasn't sure if you meant people who have been here since your very first reaction to Series 1 or people who saw Series 1 in 2005 when it aired but I can count myself into both of those. The very first episode I saw was The Empty Child when it aired and I've also been watching you since your very first reaction to the first episode, my name is just different on Patreon. Secondly, there is something I want to address.. you keep referring to this season as the "last one" and I thought you were just talking about it in terms of it being the most recent series since there won't be anything else to react to for a while but I hope you don't think it's the last series as in the end of Doctor Who. I say this because you mentioned whether it'll have an "ending ending" I'm not sure what you've heard but don't buy into rumours. I'll tell you right away that Doctor Who will continue, it's just the end for now as it has been before. It'll probably be really weird for you but it's something a lot of us are used to already over the years. I look forward to seeing you react to the next series at the same time as the rest of us, it's actually surreal already seeing you react to this episode which I saw only a few months ago when it aired. It's been a long journey with you, seeing you react to Christopher, David, Matt, Peter, Jodie and Ncuti. As for the episode, a lot of people liked it and said it was great, I actually think it's awful, a very weak opener too. But I do like the rest of the season. That's not a spoiler at general opinion or anything, that's just personal thoughts. We'll have plenty of time to talk about that when you finish this season. There's some things in this episode that I just hate a lot.. first of all the weird "was it your wife" eyeroll comment Belinda made in the hospital to the injured man making light of domestic abuse, this is meant to be taken as a joke. Then the Doctor blacking out the hospital. Then the cat being killed for no reason... and stuff at the end like how the Doctor is celebrating and dancing at the villain's death. Yeah he was a nasty person but that is so out of character and mean spirited. He just doesn't care at all. Also the weird idea that because he plays video games he wants to be a dictator? what even is that... it's so ridiculous. Also this guy is like 30 or something trying to pass for a teenager. Plus there's a lot of really bad suprisingly amatuer writing like the fact that you're supposed to be upset that a character we've never seen before that the Doctor developed a relationship with completely off-screen died? I already forgot her name and I just watched the episode with you. It bothers me because Ncuti is such a great actor, he can cry on command and show such emotion yet sometimes it's wasted on dumb, meaningless stuff like that. You predicted the IMDB rating to be a 4, it should be in my opinion.

I always prefer the companions that argue and challenge the Doctor. It makes it feel more realistic. Case in point Rose (Series 1) and Clara. I love interesting dynamics. So I liked Belinda in this first episode.

DoctorWho

Ok lets start at the beginning or in this case before the beginning. The scene you saw at the very start is just a BBC advert. Nothing to do with Doctor Who lol. But you may have them with other episodes going forward so just be aware. There is nothing to do with the series before the Whoniverse logo appears. I've watched it three times but not sure what you're meaning about the mystery of Belinda and meeting her in the future? The only thing I can think off is the bit from the doctor where he says he was looking for her because he'd been told about her so I'm thinking that's what you're referring to? I give this a 3/5. I think it's better then Space Babies. It's a solid enough start to the season but nothing special. It does the job it sets out ot do and is a bit of a fun ish episode to get us started. I quite like Belinda. She reminds me a bit of how Donna was in her first appearance (or Tegan from the classic series). I like companions that love traveling with the Doctor but it's also nice to have a change where there is a bit of tension and calls out the Doctor when they overstep the mark. Just checked and I've been a Patreon for exactly three years. If I remember I joined around series 4 but was watching the you tube edits way before that.

I am sorry that you didn't really like Belinda. I liked her a lot, but then I do always like the argumentative travelling companions most. And despite the reluctance to travel with him and the annoyance that he tested her DNA without asking I think she has much more chemistry with The Doctor than Ruby did. I loved Ruby in 73 Yards partly because I thought that her acting abilities flowered when she wasn't in his shadow, following along rather passively. That is not a criticism of Millie by the way. I think she played the character as she was asked to and when she gets the chance to shine she really really does. But Belinda arguing and her determination to get back home made the sparks fly which I really enjoyed. I hope you don't mind me saying that things do calm down a bit and I think you will like her more as time goes by. I also liked the idea that a silly Earth gimmick of paying to have a star named after you (or a loved one) might be taken seriously by people whose planet rotates around that star. Even sillier than the naming idea itself but fun. And I do think that Belinda was quite touched by her boyfriend's present at first until he started getting pedantic about what she should be called. I think the controlling boyfriend theme was kind of flagged up right there, at the beginning, when he insisted on calling her "Miss Belinda" because she is not married and got quite annoyed when she questioned it. The design of the robots and of their planet did look like an old fashioned sci fi programme's idea of what this kind of thing should look like. I am not sure why that decision was made - if it was made and it isn't just me - but I enjoyed that aspect too. The story itself was a bit thin I guess but that's often the way with stories that introduce a new companion. I know what you mean about getting used to The Doctor doing things that any newcomer would question. To me, it's refreshing to see someone who does. I will be interested in what you make of this whole series when it is over. There are so many things we can't say until then!
