Dr. Who Reaction - 13x2 - The War of the Sontarans

I agree, this wasn´t as confusing as episode one, by far :D :D

That´s so true. It´s weird how all Sontarans get into the ship at the same time. Not really strategic thinking :D :D

"Soldiers pay the price for their commanders' mistakes.", The Doctor, "War of the Sontarans" See below ... It's nice to have a historical-ish story again - historical-ish because the Sontarans are mucking up history - and that's quite an interesting idea. "This planet has defied us ever since the great Commander Linx first staked his claim in the ground of its feeble soil.", Skaak, "War of the Sontarans" That's a non-spoilery reference to a Classic Who story - it's a non-spoiler because a Sontaran would naturally claim "this planet, its moons and satellites, for the greater glory of the Sontaran Empire" - what else would you expect? BTW the script (and subtitles) spell the name of the Sontaran in that Classic Who story as "Commander Lynx" but that was a mistake - it was "Commander Linx" (with an "i"). They also mispell the name of the Temporal Sontaran Commander in the credits of this story - I suppose Sontaran names are a bit hard to spell. BTW2: the wounded Sontaran they find in Mary Seacole's British Hotel is played by Dan Starkey - who usually plays Strax. Actually, I've just been rewatching another Classic Who story with Sontarans and the slightly updated design of the Sontarans in this story look a bit like that Classic Who version - which is nice because I had thought that the design in that Classic Who story was unique in the Who stories. I've also recently rewatched "The Poison Sky", and Donna opens the door control like the Doctor does here: "But it's Sontaran shaped, you need three fingers.", "You've got three fingers.", "Oh, yeah.", Donna and the Doctor, "The Poison Sky" "And they've got this obsession with Japanese food. I heard one of the big chief potato-heads talking about Tempura Command. Tempura Offensive. What's that all about?", Dan, "War of the Sontarans" Dan is good fun. "Gold star and a sticker for Mrs Seacole. Keep up, Lieutenant General.", The Doctor, "War of the Sontarans" Nice running gag with the Doctor scoring her story companions. "Now, if they're on the same timetable every day, which I bet they are, in 38 minutes' time, they will all enter their ships simultaneously. While they're inside, we will have exactly 7.5 minutes to drain their supplies.", The Doctor, "War of the Sontarans" Ok, I don't understand - perhaps someone can explain it to me. Sure, the Sontarans need to return to their ships to refill their suits - that's fine. But it's really silly that they all do it at the *same* time leaving no one on guard. "Repair must not be undertaken by idiots.", Priest Triangle, "War of the Sontarans" The voice and incessant behaviour of the floating Priest Triangle remind me of another floating machine, the Megara, in yet another Classic Who story. "Half a league onward.", The Doctor, "War of the Sontarans" That's a reference to the famous poem "The Charge of the Light Brigade" by Alfred, Lord Tennyson about a military action by the British during the actual Crimean War. Half a league, half a league, Half a league onward, ... Not though the soldier knew Someone had blundered. Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die. Into the valley of Death Rode the six hundred.

An entertaining romp. I agree with Jade that the Sontarans have finally been made sinister again - probably their most effective appearance in the revived series, and with quite a few nods to their Classic history as well. The British General was something of a cliché, but I don't necessarily disagree with his actions at the Finale. The Doctor had planned on doing something along similar lines at the end of Poison Sky,after all - albeit sacrificing himself as well. Overall,a watchable episode...and less confusing than Chapter One.
