The beast below, like Jade said :)

"Ever hidden in a panelled alcove?", The Doctor, "Kerblam!" I like this little story with an applicibility to modern society and warehouse working conditions and robot/human balance. And there are lots of really nice bits here even in this one-off episode - like the misdirection where the viewer believes the two managers must somehow be involved (especially given how suspicious it is keeping lists of missing people in a locked filing-cabinet), but it turns out they were doing their jobs to the best of their ability. After all, who would suspect an "invisible" maintenance worker? I like the fez and its callback to Matt's Doctor. And the Agatha Christie callback! We like callbacks - and we love it when our reactors spot them as well! "What are you doing, practising your lurking?", Dan, "Kerblam!" I really like Lee Mack's character, Dan, the nice warehouse worker, who takes Yaz's product assignment and is killed. Lee Mack is another example that comedians can make really nice actors in serious roles - see Catherine Tate. The role of Dan is not a big role but it is memorable and very sad. And of course we loved Kira as well in the short time we got to know her. Doctor Who stories can be cruel to lovely characters. "Except, what does every parcel here have in common?", The Doctor, "Kerblam!" It shows again how Doctor Who can make the mundane things in our life a huge threat. Will you just be popping bubble-wrap packing for fun in the future after watching "Kerblam!"? Well, perhaps you might have before I just reminded you about it - but now you might have second thoughts. "Kerblam's trying to kill their own customers? That's the worst business plan I've ever heard.", Graham, "Kerblam!" But the best thing about this episode is, of course, Graham again. He makes friends with his fellow maintenance worker. Now, admittedly, his fellow janitor turns out to be the enemy - but he has a nice relationship with him until we find that out. "Laters! Oh, I'm not doing that again. Sticking with bye.", The Doctor, "Kerblam!" Laters!

I would say The Beast Below.

The episode you were thinking of at the end is The Beast Below. Matt's second story as the Doctor with the Smilers and now you mentioned it yeah I can see what you mean. I like this episode although the moral message at the end is a bit odd with the system basically getting away with killing Kera. With this in mind it gets a 4/5. 81st/140. A story I quite enjoy watching but I wouldn't go out of my way to watch if that makes sense.

I'd give this the same rating as you. It's a decently traditional Who story - although, as Stephen points out, the ending is sort of back to front: Capitalism is good, and how dare an individual dare to try destroy it! I enjoyed your thoughts at the end. I believe we will adapt well (on the whole) to the rise of robot workers and A1. As you point out,we'll enjoy more leisure time for one thing. Entire industries, employing countless numbers of people, have disappeared over the years through advancements in technology. Weavers; ploughmen; scribes; etc. Yet society has plodded on regardless, simply by inventing new things which require new skills.

Is the episode you’re thinking of at the end ‘Time Heist’ ?

I quite like this episode it was well filmed but I think its a little forgettable good acting from all the Fam and Jodie. I’m sorry we didn’t get more of Lee Mack, who if you don’t know is a well known comedian in the uk. I think we are heading in the wrong direction with AI especially when people like Elon Musk are in such a position of power. Greed blinds people to the needs of those who have very little. I remember years ago when applying for a mortgage the bank manager talking about how great computers were for the business, a few years later I discovered he had been made redundant. Go figure. Yeah this episode brings up some tricky problems. I think the IMDB rating was about right.

I really like this episode until we get to the ending when the company is suddenly absolved of all its bad practices and the supposed solution is for it to become more "people powered" and carry on. I agree with your vision of what should happen. A universal basic income without any means testing and work available for those who actually want it would be sane and workable. It wouldn't suit those who currently have most of the economic power of course. Charlie was wrong in his tactics and his methods but the writer should have made it much clearer that this doesn't mean the system is ok I must admit, as soon as I saw Kira I thought of the maintenance worker in Rose's first adventure away from Earth. The one where people watched the Earth burn and Cassandra kept saying "moisturise me". Introduce a pleasant, innocent character who has no power or authority and I just know they are going to die! RTD, Moffat and Chibnall do love to pluck at our heart strings. I like the grand sweep of the setting. The factory itself and even the CGI conveyor belts. And we do get good value from all the companions even if the character development isn't happening. I agree with Dr Who that Mandip Gill's acting is excellent. Even when she is not at the centre of the scene. Just watch her reaction shots.

This episode is a solid one. I would describe the entirety of series 11 as solid. Just very well done.

I give a shout out to Jodie’s amazing acting every week so this week I want to give a very special mention to Mandip Gill who plays Yasmin. She is so fantastic and I ADORE her emotional moments. She’s my favourite character from the fam!!
