Dr. Who Reaction 11x3 - Rosa

Dr. Who Reaction 11x3 - Rosa

Hmmm that´s an interesting point you´re making, about the movement happening anyways, just later then sooner. I guess it depends on personal views wether one thinks that´s true, or not. My personal view is, that even if it would have happened later, it would have been a disaster for the people having to endure even more years of pain. For people who are not affected it´s "just" a sooner or later, but for people affected it means the world. That´s why I personally would always fight for changes like this to happen sooner, not saying you wont by the way. I just try to express my personal feelings on this topic. If you compared it to the meat industry for example, if we´d stop eating meat in 2025 or in 2030 wouldn´t make a big difference to us humans, but for every animal that died within those 5 years, it would mean the world to them. And to be honest, I personaly belive if racist people had this kind of power in real life they´d do even worse things, like travelling back to Rosas birth, hiring some headhunter, to let her be killed right away. So even though he was evil, to me he was just a light version of what he could have been, with these kind of belives.

Ohhh thank you so much for clarifying certain topics for me. Particularly the Stormcage prison topic. I had no idea this was related to River. Goot to know though :) Yeah we had a similar topic in Buffy as well. A chip implanted into a brain of a villain, that made him completely harmless to others :) Haha that Ryan bit where he congratulates himself is sooo well written. Makes me laugh every single time. :) Wait....so you are saying the Asteroid named after Rosa happened in real life as well? I thought that was just a tiny Dr. Whoy addition to the plot. Wow :)

This is a powerful episode. And I like how our TARDIS team works the problem together. And lots of time-related gags like with Frank Sinatra and a mobile phone, and: "We're here to, er, pitch an invention. Yeah, er, it's a telephone ... that plays music, and it's a camera also, takes photo ... and it's a calendar. And it send letters.", Graham, "Rosa" and Graham ending up calling himself Steve Jobs. "No, pack it in. You ain't Banksy.", "Or am I?", Graham and the Doctor, "Rosa" Banksy is a famous and famously anonymous street artist. And now made more mysterious because by the Doctor's comments. "It's a Stormcage identifier. The most secure prison facility this side of the universe.", The Doctor, "Rosa" Krasko was imprisoned at the Stormcage prison and we've heard that name before - that was where River Song was imprisoned. "Doctor Song's in my personal custody. I released her from the Stormcage Containment Facility four days ago and I am legally responsible for her until she's accomplished her mission and earned her pardon.", Octavian, "Flesh and Stone" Krasko has a neural inhibitor implanted in his brain to prevent him from hurting people. This is not completely unique in Science Fiction; I recall an episode in the 1980s SF show "Blake's 7" which featured the same idea of a brain inhibitor placed in a prisoner. Krasko also has a vortex manipulator like Captain Jack and River had. (It might have been that one I saw in that exhibition recently.) It was moving how much distress Graham felt when he was forced to become part of history. It reminds me a bit of the situation Donna found herself in "The Fires of Pompeii" and how much distress Donna felt. "Oh! Oh, it worked. Nice one, Ryan. Thanks, Ryan.", Ryan, "Rosa" I also liked the use of the time displacement weapon against Krasko himself. The Doctor causes Krasko to send his equipment away in time, and then Ryan zaps Krasko with it. "Asteroid 284996. Also known as Rosaparks.", The Doctor, "Rosa" I must be honest, and assumed that it was a massive and particular honour (though well deserved) that an asteroid was named after Rosa Parks - but, actually, it turns out that to get a name it just has to be proposed by the discoverer of the asteroid and then approved as not offensive and vaguely worthwhile by the IAU (the world body that approves astronomical names). If you're interested, there was a recent video by Matt Parker talking about this process (this is not worthy of an Advent special reaction - just an informational video): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9lKcs-h7fg It's very rare in the complete history of Doctor Who for the program's theme not to play over the end credits. But this is a good way to end a powerful story.

Lol I just watched the episode, and I think I know what you meant hahaha :D :D

He makes a few references to being a bus driver in this episode, and he actually drives one of the buses around the 38 minute mark in the episode, albeit only for a few seconds onscreen. Also to respond to your point that Graham SHOULD have driven the bus that Rosa parks was on, that would’ve been a very insensitive and controversial move. That moment is still fairly recent and raw in terms of history. I think the show made the right choice in what they did. It was a fantastic episode regardless 😊

DoctorWho

It would have been controversial - but it would have made sense! Plus,it had been specifically mentioned in the previous episodes. If they weren't going to integrate his own profession, why did they make him a bus driver? Why not a plumber (e.g.)

Ian Smith

Also they do mention Graham being a bus driver in this episode. He mentions it when he’s in the bar playing pool, and also in the hotel room when recounting the story of how Grace told him “you better not be like Blake. Blake the snake”

DoctorWho

Very simple answer. Because James Blake was the one driving the bus, and was part of the historical moment. Having Graham ride the bus would’ve been controversial.

DoctorWho

Oh sorry I didn't read it back. I should have put for personal reasons or not said anything. My bad.

Jade Ellis

A worthy and brave (for Dr Who) episode, and I'd give it the same rating as you did. I have two reservations about the actual plotting, though. Firstly, the scheme of the 'racist time travelling alien' feels very wet to me. Did he actually believe that preventing Rosa Parks from getting on the bus would somehow prevent the development of the equal rights movement in the US? Surely it would have taken place sooner rather than later anyway..? One individual being denied the opportunity to board a bus would hardly have brought the movement to a complete impasse, surely! The second issue is that the character of Graham had repeatedly been established as being a bus driver (especially in the first episode of the season), and yet this aspect was never mentioned in a story about the threatened absence of a bus driver. Surely Graham's profession would have provided a likely solution, otherwise why establish it in the first place?

Ian Smith

Don’t worry Nicole. It’s a matter of opinion. I, for one really love the next episode so just watch it and make your own mind up.

DoctorWho

I agree with you 100%. It´s sad and it makes me angry almost every single day. We as humanity could achive so much if only we worked together, but it takes just one hateful person, like Trump, to destroy all the good that could be there. And instead of fighting the dividers, people are fighting the innocent minorities. It´s just so infuriating. Thank you so much for your kind words. It always feels good, not to be alone with your frustration. :)

Nicologik

Awww thank you so much. I loved the episode, The topic is extremely important, and I love this show for shining a light on it. I´m exited for this Era as well. I like it a lot so far, apart from the first episode, that wasn´t really mine :)

Nicologik

That "Rise up" Song is one wonderful piece of music. It gives me the shivers every single time. What a great piece of art. :) I have never heard of Noughts and Crosses before, it´s not known in Germany. Or at least I don´t know them. Thank you for your kind words. I still held back a lot regarding those emotions. But I didn´t want to lose my temper completely. Topics like this and injustices to innocent people make my blood boil pretty fast. They just happen way too often, still in 2024.

Nicologik

I´m sorry you had to go trough similar issues, because of beeing Trans. I can´t stand people who judge others for whatever reason, instead of fixing their own life and the reason why they feel so bad they have to spread hatred in the first place. Just one tiny favor if it´s ok for you. Please don´t mention episodes that I haven´t watched yet, in any way, shape or form. You telling me you will skip it, immediately gives me the feeling that the episode will not be good, and I know that there might be other reasons for you skipping the next episode, but I just can´t help but think, it might be because it´s bad. I don´t want to sound rude and I´m not mad or anything, I just want to go into episodes without knowing anything about them, and without any expectations. :)

Nicologik

Yes this is a very good episode. It makes it into my top 40 being 39th/140 and I give it a 4/5. There are some very powerful scenes here but some nice comedy moments despite the seriousness of the topic. The bit when Yaz isn't sure where she should go on the bus always resonates a little with me because I've had similar thoughts because of being Trans. I will be giving next week's episode a miss but I'll definitely watch your intro and outro.

Jade Ellis

It's really strange to be reminded about that IMDb rating. It's a great episode and it doesn't hold back from showing life just as it was in 1950s Alabama. The scene near the beginning where the white man hits Ryan manages to be shocking even though we know how things were there and then. And, yes, not enough has changed and we sometimes feel like it is one step forward, two steps backward. But the Rise Up song over those final scenes on the bus still give me goose flesh. The episode was co written by Malory Blackman. The author of the Noughts and Crosses children's book series. I don't know of they were published in Germany but they were very well known here. Back in the late 1980s, I saw a magazine called Ebony which had an interview with Rosa Parkes in it and thought that there must be some mistake. It was like seeing that there was an interview with Florence Nightingale or Lord Nelson. Somebody from history. I had unconsciously pushed the story further back in time (in my mind) probably because it seemed so wrong that it should have been so recent. Great reaction. Your emotions were entirely justified.

Stephen Males

Wow Nicole! I really loved your reaction to this episode. In my opinion, this is one of the best ever episodes of the show. It’s a classic. I’m so excited for you to watch more of these episodes. This era is my favourite.

DoctorWho

I feel you. This attitude towards people who look different makes me angry too. I think the people who think this way never really changed or went away. They were just silenced. Now with people like Donald Trump these stupid people feel emboldened to show their true colours. So sad. This was a good episode but very emotional. I like the way this team work together. I am so happy that you feel so outraged at the injustices in this world like Me. You are a good person Nicole. xx
