Dr. Who Series 9 Episode 8

Yes I was so proud of myself when I saw that I was right about the location. :) Your training really helped a lot. :) Thanks :) I always love callbacks to old characters :) I didn´t mind them doing this, but I get your point. :) Thank you for the video. It´s too funny how that happened haha :)

"The only way anyone can live in peace is if they're prepared to forgive", The Doctor, "The Zygon Inversion" It was nice for us, we location-quiz fans, that the pedestrian underpass and shopping centre where we saw the Doctor, Martha and Captain Jack in "The Sound of Drums" - (I like remembering that story) - was used again as the Fleet Estate Centre where Bonnie attacks the Etoine Zygon. BTW: I've just noticed that the same location was used in "Love & Monsters" when Elton is carrying the pizza back to Jackie's flat. We get another funky Doctor name - "Doctor Puntastic". Fun! A callback to another episode is that we see the battle helmet of a Mire (from "The Girl Who Died", just a few stories ago) is behind them in the Black Archive. As Andrew mentioned, the "Five rounds, rapid." said by Kate was a callback to one of the most famous lines by her father. But, I'm not a big fan of it in this case. It is MASSIVELY famous for Classic Who viewers (the Brigadier actor even used it as the title of his autobiography) - but I don't think it would have been a well known saying of the Brigadier character within the programme and the Doctor wasn't present when he said it in that Classic Who episode. But, it's fun for us. Re: "Truth or Consequences". I've recently seen a video of someone talking about the town changing its name to the name of the game show. https://youtu.be/bkEdkCdu004?t=468 "Yes, well I'm dead now and I thing I might be more dead in a minute.", The Doctor, "The Zygon Inversion"

Wow 125 already. Times goes by so fast. I´m surprised by your rating but I´m glad you enjoy these episodes. :) I agree Jennas performance is really good. I liked Peters even more, but she did a decent job in my eyes. :) Thank you for explaining the Zygon symbols. I really thought I had missed something very important. That´s a relief :) Wait....The writers misremembered their own explanation for what the TARDIS stands for? That´s funny :) :)

Haha yes it had to happen. And I´m glad it did. :) Capaldi is one of my favorite doctors as well. :) His abilty to deliver dialogue is soooo good. And watching him in German confirms my belives. Because in the dubbed German version he is not even close to the orignial version. Just his voice missing takes away so much from his character. They way he talks in combination with his acting makes the package. And with the German dubbing it´s not the same anymore.

Interesting that you have had this reaction for the very first time. Maybe a Youtube edit takes away from the emotional impact of this speech. And you have to see the whole sequence to really make it work. I´m gald you enjoyed this episode. :)

Nicologik

Wow I´m surprised that you rate this episode that high. :) The speech was amazing indeed, I totaly agree with you about that. :) And Coleman did a good job as well. :)

Nicologik

Capaldo did such a fantastic job with this speech :) I agree, I want people to be kind to each other. And I´ve been very sad about the political situation for a while now. You´re right, there is so much more that I would want to say, but you have to be careful on the internet with the things your saying. By the way my throat is doing better now, hope it´ll stay that way. Thank you so much for caring :)

If I've done my maths correctly, so far you've seen a total of 125 episodes of New Who. Out of those 125, there are only 9 episodes that I rate as a full 5 out of 5. This is one of them. There's not much I can actually say about this episode. I think it's outstanding, and that really covers everything! But this time while watching it along with you it particularly struck me how good Jenna Coleman's performance is. Some trivial notes: The Doctor's Union Jack parachute is a reference to the James Bond films. I think the Zygon symbol spray-painted everywhere is supposed to represent a Zygon claw. "Five rounds, rapid" was originally said by Kate's father. During parts of his speech, the Doctor is talking in a deliberately exaggerated way, to imitate a stereotypical TV quiz show host, perhaps from the 1970s. When Osgood says she's heard a couple of explanations for what "TARDIS" stands for, that's an in-joke. As you saw in "An Unearthly Child" it was originally explained as standing for "Time and Relative Dimension in Space" (which is also the only explanation that's been given until now in New Who), but more commonly in classic stories the "D" was explained as standing for "Dimensions" (due to writers misremembering it).

It had to happen eventually,Nicole...and today's the day (brace yourself!): I am in complete agreement with everything you said - right down to your rating. (And my feelings also reflect Jenny's). IF you remove the Doctors speech, this would be a generally ok but fairly unmemorable two-parter. There's a part of me that wanted a slam-bang 'in the nick of time' Finale,as we had with the resolution of the Zygon storyline in Day Of The Doctor; but giving over the conclusion of the plot to Capaldi and his wonderful performance was the absolute correct thing to do. His speech towers over this story, and stays in the viewers mind. Capaldi is not my favourite Doctor, but (from a technical perspective) he is the best actor to ever take the role; of that there can be no doubt.

I have watched edited YouTube versions of other people's reactions to this episode far too many times. I always enjoy it, especially the Doctor's speech near the end. But this is the first time since my first viewing of the complete episode that I have had tears in my eyes during the speech. Capaldi is doing an acting masterclass there. And Jenna's performance as Bonnie makes me almost forget that it is the same actress playing both her and Clara. And, yes, the speech does feel very topical right now. But I have said that the last fifteen times. Absolutely love this episode. Doctor Basil, Bonnie, Clara, Osgood, Kate. The poor Zygon guy who just wants to live in peace. Fantastic drama and performances for me. I would only change one thing about it. And that's because I live in London. Beneath The Lake-Before The Food, The Girl Who Died-The Woman Who Lived, The Zygon Invasion-The Zygon Inversion. A lot of two-parters with matching titles in this series.

This is not only a 5/5 for me but it's in my top ten of new Who stories at number 10. Any doubts I had about Capaldi being the doctor was gone after this episode. that speech is amazing and made Capaldi not only the Doctor, but a great Doctor. It's my favourite story of his so far. Coleman is great playing the villain and as I said last time I think she looks stunning here. And it's great having Osgood again.

Hey Nicole I have seen that speech by Capaldi at least 10 times and it still moves me to tears. What a fantastic actor he is. Also Jenna did a great job in her duel role as Clara and Bonnie. I think that this episode and the previous one are often highly regarded because of that speech. Maybe without it the rating would be lower, but hey. It’s really amazing because the anti war speech is so much more relevant now than when it first came out. I just want people to be kind to each other, there is so much hate right now, and it makes me sad. I sense you are a kind person, and you probably feel these things more than you say. I know you care about animals, that is always a good sign in my eyes. It’s not just Germany where opinion is shifting to the far right. Here in the UK we have a problem with it also. But enough about politics. I hope you have a good week and your throat is better soon. xx
