Dr. Who 50th Anniversary Extras

Important: Unfortunately Youtube didn´t accept the first video, therefore I provide with the link right here: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01m3kfy

Also sorry for the chaos in my head today. I was still pretty out of it, with all the turmoil and no free time at all. Hope it´s not too bad, but please be nice to me. :)

Dr. Who 50th Anniversary Extras

Comments

Thank you :) I really had fun with this one :)

Nicologik

I really enjoyed this when it came out, and I enjoyed it again watching it with you. I am a big fan of Strax and so that was the highlight for me. I’m glad you had fun as well. X

Jenny Smyth

Yes, I worked that one out :D And I´m happy you felt the same way about this episode. Although you understood it way better than I did. Ohhh I could have gotten that celery joke.... Of course! Well, my mind was way too occupied thinking about the probably disgusting taste of celery and chocolate spread :D I got the one with action figures as well :) My hightlight is "The night of the doctor", but to be honest all of those last movies and episodes and special stuff was great. I enjoyed it so much, to take a break from the usual Dr. Who episodes, and just enjoy all of this wonderful extra stuff that the Dr. Who universe has to offer :)

Nicologik

Thank you for beeing so kind, I was anxious already. But I really enjoyed it :) I knew that I had seen two of the three doctors before. They were familiar, I just couldn´t figure out where I had seen them exactly :) Oh wow, so the people in the UK do have an idiom that was created in the TV show Dr. Who? That is sooo cool :) Thank you for explaining the John Barrowman joke to me. When I first saw it, I thought it might have been a joke, cause I knew John Barrowman is gay, but it felt so weird, not knowing wether it really was a joke or not, and I didn´t want to offend anyone, so I stayed silent instead. Good to know that it really was meant as a joke. :)

Nicologik

I guess I´ve seen so much more of Peter Davison than I first thought. Thank you for pointing out the credits by the way, didn´t notice it while watching. :) I´m still not loosing hope they will show that movie in cinemas again, in the future :D

Nicologik

It´s still on my radar :D That´s all I can say for now :D

Nicologik

More David is always great haha :D Thank you for the information about the people appearing in this movie. One day I´ll have to listen to one of those CD´s of John Barrowman :D WOOOOW, I wish I could have been in that cinema as well. Must have been a great moment, when all the laughter suddenly stopped and the whole room went silent.

Nicologik

Oh really? It's definitely a very good show so I recommend keeping it on your radar but its cool you've heard of it before!

KrispyKrushems

I thought about reacting to that show already. Actually it was on the poll we did, before I started reacting to Good Omens. People chose Good Omens though so Broadchurch might still come up someday in the future :)

Nicologik

I´m glad noone expected me to really get every single joke in this one. I was so anxious after what happened in previous reactions, like in the minisode for example :D

Nicologik

Thank you so much for your kind comment :) I´m glad I was right about Georgia. I was anxious already that I mixed something up again :D

Nicologik

Thank you so much. Do you know why it isn´t available for sale any longer? It´s very strange, I would think a game like this would be very successfull.

As you may have worked out, I'm a big Classic Who fan. But you used the exact words I had noted down for my feelings about the "Five-ish Doctors": "joy" and "love". However, I knew from the outset that you weren't going to spot all the details or recognize everyone. I'm a knowledgeable fan and it took me a few views to see all of their in-jokes. It was very cool to see all the cameos - lot's of cameos, lots of love: - Georgia Moffett - BTW she was also the Producer of this video. She eats her ice-cream with a stick of celery - Peter Davison's (her father) costume had celery on the lapel; - the people from "The Hobbit" movie production - as Andrew mentioned, Peter Jackson is a Doctor Who fan and has said he has hoped to direct a Doctor Who episode sometime. All those "Hobbit" scenes were filmed by the people in New Zealand and sent in; - John Barrowman appearing to have a wife and kids in his car, and then he dives our heroes to Cardiff singing show tunes leaving our crew with Barrowman merchandise; - Sean Pertwee (as mentioned above, the son of Jon Pertwee, the third Doctor) - the swirl of Classic companions haunting Moffat; - Steven Moffat - playing with action figures of the David and Matt Doctors as he's writing his scripts; - the three Dalek operators who were locked in their room were people associated with or a fan of the show: the son of the second Doctor (and in "Midnight"), the voice actor of the New Who Daleks, and a TV presenter who is a big fan of the show. And they're all reading a magazie called the "Dalek Operator's Gazette". And so eventually our heroes break in and get filmed - but their Dalek scene is cut! However, it all turns out ok in the end - but only *we* know! It really is so much fun and makes me so happy to watch it. This was my highlight of the 50th anniversary shows - believe it, or not, over the other fantastic shows: "The Day of the Doctor", "The Night of the Doctor" and "An Adventure in Space and Time".

It's fine that you don't understand all the "classic" references, and I'm glad you enjoyed it! You've previously seen Peter Davison (the Fifth Doctor) in two of his classic stories, and also in the "Time Crash" minisode. You've seen Sylvester McCoy (the Seventh Doctor) in the TV movie. You've not yet seen Colin Baker (the Sixth Doctor) except in photos and the very brief clips we've had of classic Doctors in the modern series. Among the various references in this to things from the classic era, we briefly see the faces of a number of the actors who played classic companions. Examples include Janet Fielding (Tegan, who you've seen in "Kinda" and "Black Orchid"), Katy Manning (Jo Grant, a Third Doctor companion), and Louise Jameson (Leela, who I'm sure was referenced in a minisode but I can't remember which one). When we first see Peter Davison, watching the 2012 Christmas special with his family, one of his sons is watching from behind the sofa. This is a visual reference to an experience (practically a rite of passage) when little children would hide behind a sofa or chair or door to watch the show, because they found it scary! There's even a Wikipedia article about it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Behind_the_sofa Ian McKellen (Gandalf) was the voice of the Great Intelligence in "The Snowmen". Sylvester McCoy played Radagast in the Hobbit movies. Peter Jackson is a DW fan and there were discussions about the possibility of him directing an episode, but obviously the difficulty was that he lives on the other side of the world and has been involved in huge movies that have taken up years of his life to get to the screen. John Barrowman is openly gay, so the joke when the three Doctors see who's in his car is that he's secretly got a wife and children. The exhibition that the three actors break into no longer exists. :-(

Great reaction! I see that other people have already told you about Sean Pertwee and David Troughton. And also about Georgia Tennant being a real Doctor's daughter and a real Doctor's wife. I think you saw two stories with Peter Davison, the fifth Doctor. Kinda, where he and his companions meet the native people of a jungle planet and the Earth colonisers who exploit them. And Black Orchid which was set in 1920's England and features a lot of cricket. He was also in the minisode you saw called Time Crash where he suddenly appears in David Tennant's TARDIS because David has put the shields down. I think David was already married to Peter's daughter by then. The two boys are Peter's youngest sons by the way, not his grandsons. Both much younger than Georgia of course. I don't know if you spotted this in the credits but Peter wrote and directed the Five-ish Doctors story. It's a wonderful production altogether. Even for someone like me who thought that the show went a bit downhill after Tom left. All three Doctors after him still had some very good stories and their own quirks and personalities. I didn't see DOTD at the cinema (I wish I had!) so I didn't get to see those trailers until long after the event. Love both of them.

Wasn't sure you'd react to this as it's got a lot of classic references. Glad you enjoyed it and of course more David! The guy with Olivia at the start was Sean Pertwee, son of the 3rd Doctor Jon Pertwee. He's a big actor in his own right. Also one of the Dalek operators you saw was David Troughton, son of the 2nd Doctor Patrick Troughton, he was also in the 10th Doctor story Midnight which is why you seemed to reconize him. But yeah, nice nod to some of the classic Doctors there. John Barrowman is actually a singer so the DVD's and CD's are real, one of my ex girlfriends was a big fan and went to see him live twice. Sylvester McCoy (7th Doctor) was really in the Hobbit and producer/Director Peter Jackson is a fan of Doctor Who so that really is him appearing alongside Ian McKellen. As for the cinema trailers, I've only just realized that the Strax one must have been the one that played in cinemas that only had a 2D showing. My cinema was the 3D one so we got the Matt and David one. I think that's why i Iike it better. I just remember people laughing along right until the War Doctor appeared and then this silence just descended and the movie started. I still get chills at the end of that trailer.

Seeing as you like Olivia Coleman and David, I'll recommend a series you might like called "Broadchurch". The two lead roles are David and Olivia and they make an amazing duo. Though the show is very depressing but very good and had alot of familiar faces. Its on Britbox I believe, if you ever wanted to watch it!

The Five'ish Doctors was a lovely surprise for Classic fans. Many of the jokes and visual references would probably go over the heads of those not too familiar with the era,but the storyline is entertaining nonetheless. A piece of trivia (which I didn't realize at the time): the actor talking to Olivia Coleman at the start was Sean Pertwee, the son of Jon (Spearhead from Space) Pertwee, who played the 3rd Doctor.

Ian Smith

Hi great reaction. I always love coming back to The Five-ish Doctors Reboot, hilarious. That blonde woman is Georgia Tennant, you were right she played Jenny, The Doctors Daughter in S4 E6. They've been married since 2011 and are still together today with 5 kids, Georgia is also Peter Davison's daughter. Again, great reaction. I also really want to play that game, I think it's called Doctor Who: The Adventure Games.

Hot Space 🇬🇧

Hello! Nicole! The video game you saw for a second and would love to get is this: Doctor Who The Adventure Games. The games were developed by Sumo Digital in 2010 and released for free on the BBC website. Later they were published on Steam, but they are no longer for sale. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0MLJ3j3BEQ Unfortunately, the right of use has already expired, so it is no longer officially available. BUT it can be downloaded from here: https://gamesnostalgia.com/game/doctor-who-the-adventure-games The game review is also there, so I won't copy it. I have it too, I really like it!
