Idea for New Series
Added 2021-06-29 02:05:17 +0000 UTCHey, everyone!
So for this next video, I'd like to try something a little different.
I'd like to start a series in which each video covers several (4-5) unique stories that revolve around a unified theme. These videos would be normal length--likely 45 minutes or so, with approx 10 minutes devoted to each story. The stories would be told to completion, including conflict, character development, and everything that makes a story compelling--it would just be compressed, and in more anthology style than what I've been doing.
This series would not replace the typical long-form saga centering around a single individual/event/culture we've been doing recently. Those types of videos are what Atrocity Guide is known for, and it would be a mistake to depart from that completely. This idea is simply meant to allow me to tell some stories which are perfect for the channel, but I can't justify stretching across an entire video. It would also give me a bit more latitude when coming up with video ideas, which is often the most challenging part of the entire process.
I imagine the writing will be more of a hybrid of documentary and video essay, as I'll be speaking about what unites these stories, as well as providing lots of connective tissue so that transitions from one to the next will feel smooth and natural. But the narrative through-line would adhere more with the overall theme, rather than following a single character from beginning to end.
The effort spent creating these videos would not change at all. In fact, I predict expending even more effort than usual for the first few episodes as I get used to the format. It would be a different approach, and I'd like to differentiate it further giving the series its own title, commissioning an intro specifically for the series, and Ryan has expressed a desire to differentiate it musically as well.
Those of you who have been a supporter of the channel for years might remember me asking for feedback about this idea a while back. The feedback was largely positive, but the channel has evolved quite a bit these last couple years. I'd like to know what you all think of this idea in 2021. Or perhaps it's best if I try one out, and we can evaluate then?
Anyway, I think it's time to try something new. What do you think?
Thank you all for everyone, and I look forward to hearing from you,
AG

Literally only sounds like a good idea ππ»
2021-07-11 05:33:06 +0000 UTCJared nailed what I was going to share. If it's something that engages and interests you, then do it! I love the idea of a more cohesive collection of themed short stories, I've seen some other channels do something similar but I am truly excited to see what you'd bring to the table.

2021-07-01 15:18:51 +0000 UTCi think first and foremost you should definitely do whatever you want to do and find engaging to talk about. if it's a project you're passionate about, that's all that really matters and whatever you come up with will be extremely interesting. the only advice as a viewer I would give is to make sure that the video flows cohesively as a whole in service to the unified theme rather than just a series of loosely connected stories. that's just coming from my subjective preference though, and even if you did just assemble a series of loosely connected stories I would still trust that the research and dedication you bring to the subject matter would result in an entertaining project regardless. bottom line is, trust in your intuition and follow your interests and I believe whatever you come up with will be top notch. thank you for your work AG!

2021-06-30 17:31:42 +0000 UTCSounds good. Sometimes shorter stories can be just as interesting and itβs better this way than in a separate video with unnecessary padding.

2021-06-29 14:53:42 +0000 UTCI think you new and a long time viewers will support whatever direction you pursue. I for one think it is a great way to include more topics and content to people and I am excited to see it come to fruition.

2021-06-29 14:36:49 +0000 UTCYes as someone who has only fairly recently started watching the video essay format, I can see how it can stifle the creative process and I look forward to see how you take this challenge on!!

2021-06-29 09:08:43 +0000 UTCI'd be excited to see anthology videos. As long as you're interested in the subject matter, I'm interested in watching a video on it.

2021-06-29 08:24:13 +0000 UTCi like the idea of something fresh and it makes sense if the subject matter just isn't than long & detailed, but i hope that you do continue with long-form individual stories when you have subject matter that would be worth it

2021-06-29 06:33:06 +0000 UTCDefinitely go for it, sounds like a great idea. Short form-long form kinda thing, very cool! Just take your time and put yourself first!!
2021-06-29 06:04:55 +0000 UTCYou put so much care and effort into your work, you could do something entirely different from what you do now and it would be good because you are an excellent filmmaker in general. (:
