The big companies supplying the energy from Nuclear Fission wouldn't want such competition. And there's real life parallels too. Oil companies resisted electric alternatives for many decades, using every trick they could think of to stop its development. The first electric cars were over a hundred years ago, the main hurdle was battery storage - and no meaningful funding would go towards developing it when oil was already the dominant market. Remember: Capitalism only breeds innovation when its profitable. Quality and sustainability really don't come into that equation.
