Doctor Who Reaction Series 7 - Asylum of the Daleks

And the soufflé thing is based on an old British kids joke -"How does a dalek make a soufflé?" Eggs, stir, minute

Richard Austen

Whilst I agree with Ian, Oswin IS the story. So thats a bit like saying "without the main plot the story would be poor". Well yes it would be. But fortunately this main plot is so strong it balances out other issues for me.

Richard Austen

You're quite correct about the easy start. I'm certain that's why they opened series 7 with this episode. Give a "-------- of the Daleks" as a title for the first story, and you're guaranteed a healthy audience.

Ian Smith

I agree, it´s not the best episode I have ever watched. It´s a decent start in a new series for me. :) I will pay attention to the different Dalek designs in the edit for Youtube. I didn´t really notice it while watching the episode for the first time. :) That´s so true, the converting people is a Cyberman thing. It didn´t click when I watched the episode, but you are so right about this. That´s why it felt so strange for me the whole time. Somehow familiar but new as well. I had that feeling but didn´t know why, now I do. Thank you :) I agree with you on the "Sherlock" bit. Felt a little out of place. By the way I love the Sherlock show :)

I agree with you about many issues that this episode had. I think of it as an easy start into a new series, and hope that the next episodes will be more entertaining for me. :) And I 100% agree about the marital breakdown issue. Makes no sense at all. Haha the Daleks never appear again? Hahahaa that´s a good one :D

Nicologik

Well it might be the case that I overheared them clarifying the mother daughter situation. Thank you for letting me know :) Wow that´s a pretty good rank, I guess I wouldn´t rate it that high, but I´m happy you enjoyed the episode. And I can´t wait to get into more series 7 episodes :)

Nicologik

I´m glad you do like this episode. :) I agree 100% with you on the Amy and Rory topic, it makes no sense that she threw him out, after everything they have been through. That´s why I assumed he must have done something really cruel, to deserve that. It was really strange that the story was thrown in there in the first place. It started in a minisode that not everyone watched, it was not logical, and it ended in the first episode after a talk of a few minutes. And now it´s done? Doesn´t make too much sense, but maybe it´ll be important in the future, I don´t know that yet. I like Oswin as well :) Haha "time for Teletubbies" :D :D

Nicologik

I think that's a valid criticism of them converting a human. In Series 1 and Series 3 it was clearly shown as being the consequence of a Dalek race that's in dire straits. I think something similar is also implied by the classic story you mentioned, from what I can remember of it (and for whatever it's worth, I think that story is bafflingly overrated). The Daleks in this story are clearly thriving! Perhaps the explanation is that even the more extreme ideologues are often hypocrites in real life?

Andrew Gwilliam

Thanks for letting me know about the Classic Daleks, I will pay attention to it in the editing :) That is so true, if you hadn´t told me to watch those minisodes, I would have been really clueless about the Amy Rory issue. Thanks for helping me out here :) And I agree, it was resolved a little bit too quick.

Nicologik

I am exited as well. Although it feels so strange to already be in series 7. Thanks for the Happy Birthday wishes :) I liked Oswin as well, her story is really tragic. When it comes to the soft Dalek voice I feel you, it hits different in that moment. Thank you for letting me know I´m not alone with my Dalek thoughts :)

"I am Oswin Oswald. I fought the Daleks and I am human.", Oswin, "Asylum of the Daleks" I didn't really like this one. The absolute highlight is Oswin, the soufflé girl, who is clever and brave and flirty and ... turns out is a Dalek :-( I do like the variety of Classic and New Who-style Daleks we get to see - the Daleks design has changed slightly over the years since 1963 and expert Dalek fans can identify particular Dalek designs from particular stories. Also, there were callbacks to a bunch of Classic Who episodes (e.g. the planet names of Spiridon, Vulcan, etc.) which was nice. However, I'm not really a fan of the conversion of people into Dalek puppets. I like my Who monster threats to be pure - Daleks with their fixation on the purity of their race and the hatred of anything different, Cybermen converting humans into Cybermen and eliminating emotions, Sontarens with hordes of clone troopers. For me, converting people is a Cybermen thing. I know there was a Classic Who episode that sort of did the Dalek conversion thing, but I don't rate that Classic story very highly either. And I suppose you could reference the "Daleks in Manhattan" two-parter or references in "The Parting of the Ways" too. It didn't make my favourite quote list, but the Doctor says "explodey-wodey" at one point. One bit of writing I didn't like was Amy's commentary on what the Doctor is doing on the Parliament saucer. It doesn't seem natural to vocalize it - actually, it's almost a Sherlock Holmes analysis of what the Doctor is doing. Of course, Steven Moffat was in the middle of writing for the "Sherlock" series around this time. I'm a fan of all things "Sherlock Holmes" but I don't think the idea works here. Overall, I think my story rating is similar to yours. "It's me playing the triangle. Okay, I got burried in the mix.", The Doctor, "Asylum of the Daleks"

Andrew Vignaux

If it weren't for the genuinely clever and touching story of Oswin, this Dalek tale would have little going for it. Much has been (rightly) made of the shoehorned 'marital breakdown' plot (so completely resolved by the end of the story that one wonders why it was ever included); but equally bizarre are the human/Dalek transformation sequences, which make absolutely no sense; and the resolution of the Daleks forgetting about the Doctor is just ridiculous....unless,of course, they genuinely never again appear in the series as any sort of threat to the Doctor. Hands up who believes that's going to happen. Anyone..?

Ian Smith

Oh thanks for that last bit cause I know that's always going to pop into my mind every time I watch this episode going forward 😄

Jade Ellis

I'm not 100% sure but it sounded like you were a bit confused over the character that became the Dalek. She wasn't the daughter that was mentioned, Hannah. She was called Oswin Oswald, She was from the spaceship that crashed on the planet. Humans being converted into Daleks isn't a new thing as such, one of the classic stories did it as well. Fianlly, I think the Doctor Who bit at the end was just because Oswin had made the Daleks forget who the Doctor was. That said it is a nice reminder of how the last series ended. Ok, I give it a 4/5. It also just makes my top 50 by being number 50/140. So not bad. However there is only two other episodes this series that I rank higher.

In general I really like this episode and would probably give it an eight point something. The worst aspect for me is the reason given for the break-up of Amy and Rory. Yes, I can understand the idea of Rory always having wanted children. And yes I can understand Amy feeling bad about this. And yes the two actors make the scene very emotionally affecting because they are good at their job. But it makes no sense (to me) for Amy to have thrown Rory out with no explanation about why or talking things over with him. Especially when she has always known how devoted he is. And giving her a line about how waiting for 2,000 years was "nothing" compared to her sacrifice in giving him up just makes me angry. I can't believe she would even say that. Rant over. I absolutely love Oswin and the scene with the reveal that she is a Dalek, and just fantasising as world for herself, is heart-breaking. When she says that line "rune you clever boy" at the end and looks directly at the camera another YouTube reactor said something like "that girl just looked into my soul". I have actually seen the actress in two stage plays since watching this episode. I didn't notice on my first watch but near the beginning The Doctor says that Oswin has "put up a barrier" which is a bit of fore-shadowing I guess. And every time I see the little periscope/camera/speaker/whatever it is pop up from the ground of the planet I can't help saying "time for Teletubbies". I'm annoying like that.

This episode included several different classic-era Daleks but unfortunately you can barely see them except briefly in the background of some shots. Personally, I love this episode. The only real flaw that I'll mention is that if you haven't seen the minisodes then the Ponds' break-up has come from nowhere; and even with the last of the "Pond Life" minisodes, there's way too little time spent on it. It's also resolved very quickly. This is a bit of an issue I have with Moffat, that he zips through certain things without allowing them time to breathe. However, the explanation for the break-up does make sense to me. 9 out of 10

YESSS HERE WE GO SERIES 7!!!! I am SOOOOO excited for you to get into this! I love the little light thingy that you showed in the beginning of the video and happy late birthday! I actually really love this episode, I got really attached to Oswin and I really like her character. I was quite emotional when she found out that she is a Dalek, but thats what makes this story so good imo. Also this might just be a 'me' thing, but, for some reason it was also quite emotional for me to hear a Dalek speak in a soft and sad voice even though I know it's Oswin??? I have no idea why, it just hit me in the feels ahaha. And don't worry, I think a lot of the fandom sometimes thinks the same thing about Dalek episodes. How its usually the same thing over and over. I do anyways.
