Christmas Episode Series 6

Hi everyone, this episode things didn´t go as planned. First there was a power outage 10 minutes into the reaction. So I had to start all over again. And in addition to that the update of Audacity my Audio software changed my input Audio, from Microphone to webcam. And the sound is, well..... let´s say different than usual.
I´m very sorry for both of those things :/ I hope you´ll enjoy the episode nonetheless :)

Christmas Episode Series 6

Thanks for clarifying the TARDIS scene. I didn´t catch the doctors sentence in the first watch. When I watched it again during the edit, I noticed my mistake :D It´s interesting that you got a different German title than the english one. Maybe it has something to do with the fact, that Christmas is celebrated differently in German than it is in the UK. Well, but then again....I don´t really have an explanation for that. In hindsight after editing this episode for Youtube I think what bugs me the most, is the mix of genres that do not fit. We have mystical fairytale, mixed up with SkyFy technology. Those things do not really work together very well. It felt like fat and water mixed up. But without the right emulsifier, that makes them mixable, if that makes any sense.

"Do what I do. Hold tight and pretend it's a plan.", The Doctor, "The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe" It's not really one of my favourite Christmas episodes - but there are some nice bits in it. BTW: there's a prequel scene for this story: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MfJkFtqYQ3Q To clarify, in the introduction, Madge and the backward-helmeted Doctor find a ordinary 1940s Earth Police Box and it is that police box that Madge breaks into - not the Doctor's TARDIS. Afterwards, the Doctor say "Wrong one - do you think we could try again?" because he wants to find the real TARDIS. It's interesting that it said "Christmas Day" for you in the German titles - it says "Christmas Eve" (i.e. the 24th) on my English titles - related, I guess, to the differing celebration. Or the title-person didn't notice. I do like that the family use the title of "Caretaker" for the Doctor. I think one of the points of the story is the clash of the unfeeling high-tech civilization that just wants to harvest the forest (by melting it in acid, really?) in contrast with the natural forest which is trying to escape from the destruction. So in that sense, I think you need the high-tech forest rangers and their machine in the story - even though in the end it's mostly just for comedic effect. Just so you know, there's a small Classic Who reference in the episode put in for the Classic Who fans. And for New Who fans, there's also a New Who callback with the Forest of Cheem - "She fancied me." (referring to Jabe, the tree woman in Christopher's "The End of the World" episode) "Got a bit glitchy in the middle there, but it sort of worked out in the end - story of my life.", The Doctor, "The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe"

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about the episode. I wonder if I will think about it in a different way looking back at it in a few years. And thanks for letting me know about Alexander Armstrong :)

I agree with many points you make. It was a nice little episode to watch, but nothing too special. Although the ending is really well done :)

Thanks for the link. :D

I liked the portal part as well. I have great expectations. But unfortunately my own fantasy world in my mind was a little better than the one in the show :D Speaking from my point of view of course, I understand if other people do really like the episode :) Maybe the tree people should have been fairies or a princess and a prince in a castle, or something similar. Would have fitted better in the magical theme. Thanks for the info about Alexander Armstrong. I didn´t know him before. :)

I agree, time went by so fast. To me it seems as if I have only started this channel a few months ago. Series 6 went by way too fast, it was such a joy and I can´t wait what else this show has to offer in the future :D

Absolutely hated this episode when it first aired. I thought it was too silly, especially the tour of the house & the three people from Androzani Major who were obviously just really comic relief. However over the years I've grown to love it more as a fun silly episode which really works for Christmas. In fact to me it's the most Christmassy story we've had just because of the fairy tale, Narnia vibe. Now a 3/5 and ranked 94/140. It's got some very emotional parts which always brings tears to my eyes but for me the greatest bit is the Doctor's speech about Why let the kids be happy now if they are going to be sad later. The answer is, of course, because they are going to be sad later. Fun fact. Madge's husband is played by Alexander Armstrong. He was also the voice for the computer, Mr Smith, in the Sarah Jane Adventures. So his voice was actually heard in Doctor Who back with Tennent in The Stolen Earth/ Journey's End.

I enjoy the final ten minutes. The spaceship opening seems to have been included in order to incorporate 'exciting stuff' into the trailer; and the rest (as the episodes title heavily implies) is a wishy-washy variation on The Lion,The Witch,And The Wardrobe. For me,the weakest of the Christmas specials.

I know what you mean about the middle part not working as well as the beginning and the ending but I do love the portal leading to the forest and the snowy world they find there. Blatant Narnia reference of course. There's even a line for The Doctor about "what do the teach you in schools now?" which is almost a direct quote from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. I think you're right about the space travelling characters. They had a lot of potential but they were either in the wrong story or not in this one for long enough to develop the roles. Two of them were played by well known British comedians, Bill Bailey and Arabella Weir and I do wonder if the roles were only written so British viewers could watch cameos by people who have made us laugh on other tv shows. I did quite like the wooden statue/people but I suppose they were not quite as magical as the set up deserved. So, yes, this Christmas special is a mixed bag but the parts that I love, I really love. The Doctor showing off his home improvements is hilarious and visually it is really beautiful when we are in that forest. So I always enjoy watching it, whatever the faults. The airline pilot husband, by the way, is played by Alexander Armstrong, who had recently been in a comedy sketch show called Armstrong and Miller. The most popular recurring characters in that show were two British WW2 pilots who spoke like modern day British teenagers and were always complaining that things weren't fair.

The ending of this one absolutely never fails to make me cry. Seeing the Doctor shed tears of happiness for the first time. Also I can't believe Series 6 is already done! Feels like yesterday that you started 'The Eleventh Hour' in Series 5 honestly.
