Hahahaha "Do you know what those weird Germans watch on new years eve?" That´s hilarious :D :D :D
Thank you for your point of view on this episode. I guess I´m on board with you on this one :)

Oh thank you for all the info about "Dinner for one". To be honest I never questioned its origins. It´s kinda strange that it was made in Germany, for a german audience. But I´m happy you enjoyed it, because I really do like it as well. :) It´s funny. Although I have to admit watching it every single year kinda makes it less funny over time. :)

I´m glad, I´m not the only one who is not into this story so much. :)

Oh I´m sorry I included a bit of sound where it shouldn´t have been. I made more of those mistakes in my Youtube video that week. Well, I guess editing while beeing sick wasn´t the best idea. :/ I hope it didn´t bother you too much.
Thank you for all the backround info on this episode. :)
I´m really curious wether the second episode will make me want to like this story a little more. I really hope it does, but at the moment I´m not really there yet.

I just watched Dinner For One for the first time. had seen brief excerpts before. And to my surprise I found it hilarious. Also I read that it was made in Germany for a German audience even though it is in English. I had no idea.

"'scuse me, I'm making perfect sense. You're just not keeping up.", The Doctor, "The Hungry Earth"
First, a technical issue - from the point where you had the caption of "Last Technical difficulties today", you included the broadcast episode audio in the reaction video.
As mentioned above this is a return of a Classic Who monster. Well, actually the monsters look quite different - but then they always did in the various Classic stories. This is explained by the Doctor encountering different species of the monster family. And, they called us "apes" in the Classic stories too.
The Doctor uses the term "homo reptilia" - I suppose to parallel "homo sapiens", "homo heidelbergensis" etc. This has always made me cringe a bit if the term was intended to be their species name because it's not the way the species would have been named. The term was first used in one of the 1970s story novelizations.
When the Doctor is talking to the young kid, Elliot, he says that the monsters are scared of him. This is similar to what the Tenth Doctor said to Reinette in "The Girl in the Fireplace" when he said that monsters have nightmares about him.
Cool, thermal imaging sunglasses!
The new masks and the costumes are really nice. The original monsters had some really extensive latex-rubber full body suits and look virtually impossible to act and walk in.
But to be honest, I prefer some of the earlier Silurian stories to this one.
"Did you just shush me?", Amy Pond, "The Hungry Earth"

This a generic one for me. The story is very linear with ordinary generic characters. The ideas are interesting but its all just bland. The doctor, Rory and Amy are by far the best things in this. Its like the three of them have been dropped into a different boring show.

I quite enjoy this story but you are right about there being less tension and feeling of jeopardy than there should be. But I do love the appearance of the Silurians and the whole concept of creatures who populated the Earth before we did. The woman who goes into the Tardis with The Doctor is played by Meera Syal who is very much loved in the UK as a writer, actor and comedian. Not my favourite story but it does have dramatic moments (no spoilers) and I'd be inclined to give it a 7.6 I think.

As Stephen says,Dinner for One was quite unknown to us until a few years ago, when a BBC trivia show did a feature along the lines of "Do you know what those weird Germans watch on new years eve? Some British comedy routine that we've never even heard of!" :D Hungry Earth is a sort of remake of a Classic story - but not a very good remake imo. This one never gets a rewatch from me; it just feels bland and derivative.

The answer to your question is no. Even though it was a British show we have no tradition of watching Dinner For One at Christmas or New Year or even at all!. In fact the programme was completely forgotten about until a few years ago when we started hearing about the German tradition of watching it. And I think I most British people were astonished. I did also see a news item a couple of years ago about the faces of the two main characters being replaced by two politicians but I can't remember which two.
