Advent Calender 23.12.22 Classic Who Part 2

Thank you for your comment Stephen :) I did enjoy the holidays although I was sick troughout. Actually I still am, kinda. But it´s so much better already. :)

Haha well, that´s true. It´s probably very warm where you live. :D Are the seasons the exact opposite to ours, or just a little different? I found it really interesting, seeing the TARDIS from the outside, and how they went about that issue with the interior. But I´m even more interested in how they made they TARDIS appear in the first place. I mean from the technical point of view. Is there something like a behind the scenes from back then, in which they show how it was done? Thank you for explaining the "priest hole". I had never heard of that before. I really enjoyed this episode without aliens. It´s something different, and I like different :)

You´re right, I didn´t even think about that. Money had a different valu back then. Thank you for clarifying. :) I liked this story, too :)

£100 back in the 1920's is the equivalent to £5000 now so it would have been a substantial amount. The average weekly wage was about £5 so £100 would have been about 20 weeks wages. I really like this story. A nice little two part mystery, no aliens, (well apart from the Doctor and a couple of his companions.)

"A larger than average priest hole.", The Doctor, "Black Orchid" I won't have a hot chocolate for this one, thanks - a nice cool fizzy drink perhaps - it's a different season here. Letting the entire village police force into the TARDIS is quite fun - we always enjoy seeing people's reactions to entering the TARDIS. In terms of viewing the interior from outside, they had an attempt at this early in New Who - Christopher stands in front of the open door in "Rose" - but they weren't completely happy at how it looked. It was improved in later New Who series. There was a reference to a priest hole. A priest hole, if you didn't already know, was a hidden room (or in this case a whole corridor of rooms) from the late 1500s where priests could hide when they were being persecuted by the law for their religion. The use of "Indian" is interesting. Remember this was being filmed in the 1980s but showing the British society of the 1920s where they certainly would have used the word. "Brazil" - "Where the nuts come from" is a quote from the play "Charley's Aunt". It has been made into many films over the years: 1915, 1925, 1934 (in German), 1941, 1956 (in German) etc. etc. And it's been adapted for TV many times. I enjoy this pure historical story. These days in New Who, if there's a story set it the past it's very likely there will be an alien hanging around somewhere. "Where the nuts come from.", The Doctor, "Black Orchid"

I think the scriptwriters enjoyed putting a lot of clichés into the story. Especially ones that are typical of the English "country house" mystery. garden parties, mistaken identity, mysterious strangers, long lost relatives etc. So I would take the ending in the same spirit. I hope you will be well enough to enjoy the Christmas holiday. And I look forward to your next reaction whenever it is.
