Page Deconstruction #7: High Expectations (continued)

More High Expectations!! It continues from before!

And now.. it’s time for hell

can you tell I absolutely STRUGGLED with the Paulo/Lucy sequence

Paulo originally just yells at Lucy, but then I thought having her block a punch protecting Augustus would be SO punk rock. And it’s absolutely something Paulo would do.

Anyway, so many Xs. So many frustrated trashed thumbnails. So many umming and ahhing about how apathetic I should depict Lucy.

SO MUCH INDECISIVENESS THAT THE SEQUENCE BLEEDS INTO OTHER PAGES. The pages cut off above this screenshot are actually from Chapter 101! I was far into thumbnailing 101 and I was STILL struggling with this goddamn Paulo/Lucy sequence!

I’M STILL GOING ON ABOUT THIS CHAPTER. Here are thumbs I made while I was thumbnailing “Everyday Life”

ANY SPARE SPACE I HAD, I USED IT FOR THIS FREAKEN SEQUENCE

But we got there in the end, didn’t we?

I thought this crying Paulo was cute, but I redrew him for the final.

Aaand the Paulo/Daisy sequence went swimmingly with little issues (how poetic) aside from me trashing this final panel. It felt too boring and weak, and I liked instead zooming in on Daisy for a more.. despondent ominous look. It was also weird to see Paulo from looking sad to being super angry in the next page. Too much of a switch in emotion.

ANYWAY THAT’S IT FOR THE BARE ESSENTIALS

..

You mean we’re not done yet?

Oh man is there more to this chapter behind-the-scenes.

So anyway I was bouncing inbetween different sequences in this chapter, as you could tell from the final product, but Souppy thought it would be better if it jumped MORE.

He suggested a different sequence of pages because he wanted there to be parallels between what was happening with Mike and what was happening with Paulo. And there were some key areas that were parallel — on purpose!

.. but the reason it didn’t work was that the parallels were not between Mike and Paulo.

They were between Mike and Lucy.

So that’s why the sequence of pages stayed in my original format. For one thing, if you want to have a bouncing-around-sequence-of-pages, it’s good to have that idea in the first place, otherwise it just looks like you’re stitching pages together.

And I DID intend bouncing around in my sequence, but not to the extent Souppy wanted. It also helped that my intention for parallels was different.. Mike was to Lucy as Paulo was to Sue in this sequence. Souppy thought the sequence with Paulo/Lucy was about Paulo.. but it wasn’t.

At least that was my intention!!

I’ll let you guys mull over what those parallels are ;)
