Let’s talk about Patreon fees
Edit: It turns out none of this mattered and Patreon took the changes back! But at least you know which side we’re on, huh?
When you pay with a credit or debit card, someone has to foot the payment processing bill, right? So far, that’s been us, and we like it that way! What’s a few percent when you’re so generously sending us $5 or $10 or $40 a month? Who cares! We’re not gonna nickel-and-dime you.
That’s always been our policy! Everywhere!
However: today, Patreon is sending you an email stating that, “in order to give more money to creators”, they’re going to charge you the credit card fee they used to charge us: $0.35 + 2.9%.
Effectively: if you got charged $5 to support our Patreon campaign this month, you’ll pay $5.50 next month.
We’re not fans of this change. We’d take the hit if we could. But we can’t, at least until Patreon responds to the backlash (which is big, mainly because it’s a very troublesome problem for creators with lots of $1 pledgers — which isn’t us.)
And so: we hope that this small change doesn’t affect your desire to support us, because we love that support! We love you! This surcharge is, in the end, money that goes towards helping us continue to work on the comic, so we can all try to view it positively.
