I couldn't agree more. The stark differences in the characters now and later is so dramatic. It's a testament to the show that clearly wrote stories that really enabled quality character development. And yes, it had a brilliant mix and perfect balance of serious, heart-felt messaging, and just plain fun, and comedic, interwoven. Brilliant script writing, for sure.

2024-08-28 04:03:00 +0000 UTCStill one of the very best episodes they ever did. And you're spot on about Ryan Murphy and how much more he was in it and cared about these early episodes. Was true through to the end of Season 2. He became a bit less involved in Season 3 and then completely checked out for the latter seasons, which is when things started to go so awry. Also I love the times I rewatch this because it reminds me that Chris actually does have rhythm. He, Cory and Lea were three of the weaker dancers in the group and I remember interviews from back at that time from Zak the choreographer, that while with Lea they tried to hide it, with Chris and Cory they decided after a while to play into it for their characters (Cory's even became a storyline) so Chris started doing all the out of time shoulder shimmies and leg kicking, and kept it in character for Kurt all series to the point that people started believing that's all he could do lol. Neither were ever going to be great dancers but neither were as bad as the show made them out to be either.

I’ve watched it so much that the unique humor gets lost to me, but going back after a 2 year break is just what I needed! Also I love Tina’s version is Tonight so much more than Blaine and Rachel’s! It’s a crime that we didn’t get a full released version while Lea got Taking Chances. A lot of the characters went through such changes overs the seasons. Like Kurt had so much more attitude because, at least how I interpreted it, he had big walls up and as he matures and grows, those walls come down with less of a need for protection with attitude. And everything about Rachel that you stated. Yes she still is driven and self-serving throughout the show, but in a more mature way that makes her more aware of her behavior. Season 1 Rachel is the most annoying but also very relatable. This episode definitely has a top 5 most powerful glee scene. It’s so iconic and made such a difference at the time. I keep thinking of what was going through Chris’s mind because he himself was barely out at this point. Burt definitely was less accepting during this time, but I think they were still figuring out the character and originally made him like Ryan Murphys dad but changed him to be the dad that Ryan always wanted. Which is the best decision they could’ve made! Fun fact: Ryan originally wanted Chris to where the OG single ladies outfit but Chris refused and helped design that outfit you see in the episode. Definitely makes more sense for the character. And you’re right. To this day, Chris still talks about that song. He even referenced it in his newest book. 😂

2024-07-12 06:20:19 +0000 UTCthis episode was the one that, at 10 years old, made me fall in love with the show. I haven't seen it in a bit but watching it back I can totally see why. I remember my family showing anyone who came to our house the football single ladies scene because of how much we loved it. the show was definitely inappropriate for me at that age and a lot went over my head (i didn't know how ridiculous quinn saying finn got her pregnant through the hot tub was, I didn't know what "immaculate conception" meant, and before the show I definitely didn't know what "gay" was) but im so grateful my mom let me watch because it became such an important part of my life especially in a particularly hard time of my life. this episode and the first 13 really have such a special place in my heart. there's something so pure about the first batch or season of episodes in a show because there's no audience feedback, it's just what it was intended to be. anyway 14 years later this show still gets to me and im glad youre appreciating the writing so much here!

They got a little feedback after filming the first four but mostly filmed the first 13 episodes in a bubble before anything started airing and they had to take a turn away from being ask dark. I think you're right about the involvement as well. This part of the show is so good.

2024-07-11 19:46:31 +0000 UTCThis actually bothered me alot in the first 13 episodes. How is it that we get the full version of Crush when Rachel literally only sings the first two lines?! Also why couldn’t we have gotten a full Finn & Quinn duet of Don’t Stop Believin’? I know there was something about Madonna not giving full rights or something but I would’ve loved a full version of Papa Don’t Preach with Quinn. We absolutely should’ve gotten a full version of Tina’s Tonight.

2024-07-11 19:37:48 +0000 UTCglee’s peak is s1-3, the best seasons!! also i love you talking about rachel, this is an unpopular opinion but rachel is my favorite character on the show and i think she has the best character development and i hate when people act like she never changed because while she has aspects of s1 rachel throughout the show she has changed and grown a lot. i really love her arc in s2 i think she grows beautifully.

2024-07-11 19:27:37 +0000 UTCi absolutely love jenna’s voice. i’ve always wondered why when i’ve heard her sing live she sounds nothing like tina. i could literally close my eyes and just listen to the vocals and determine if it’s jenna or tina singing and i think that’s interesting.

2024-07-11 17:43:42 +0000 UTCYeah I can't believe how much they pushed away all characters except Rachel, Finn, Quinn and sort of Kurt. Jenna is such a good singer and she deserved to get full versions of her songs from the early episodes. Also how they decide to write her character also sucked.

2024-07-11 17:41:22 +0000 UTCive always wanted them to actually let jenna record a full version of “tonight” and release it. imagine your first solo and you have to purposely mess up the note and they don’t release it. and also to note that tina’s first two songs “i kissed a girl” & “tonight” were not released and were both later on sang by rachel and released.
