SPEAK NOW CONCERT - TAYLOR SWIFT

Comments

of course, she did write that one for a ninth grade talent show. . . . . and, she's from Pennsylvania. Maybe she's just in love with the Southern accent? ❤️

Robert Thompson

They actually made the DVD --- it was supposed to be part of a bundle. I went looking and found the SKU still listed on some sites in 2019 ---- but it got pulled and wasn't sold. Once it had a catalog number though. . . lazy database management. The production company for Red was the same as Speak Now: Anderson Lopes Productions; and the format was the same. They filmed not on specific planned nights, but on several stops and then edit them together (partly, because Taylor gets colds. A lot.) he hosts the DVD version of the Red Tour from a Brazilian website after it was pulled. He made it four parts. Taylor Music has a few different versions of complete tour nights; haven't watched all of those , though. Frankly, I think Taylor set up her own production company just to avoid the problems, as much as to have more control; her collaboration with Apple Music to produce and host the 1989 World Tour video, combined with her decision to pull her catalog off Spotify, generated a lot of revenue for Apple. And, like Reputation, it was a 5 year contract.

Robert Thompson

I was so happy she did a cover of Drops of Jupiter, it's my all time favorite songs!!!

Just now watching this- but Back to December wasn’t part of the setlist on Eras Tour; it has been played acoustically as a surprise song. If you want to hear her sing Speak Now songs now (only Enchanted and Long Live were setlist for Eras) I do have a link to high quality vocals of all the Eras Tour surprise songs!

Erika

During her acoustic set for this tour she always did a couple covers of artists/bands from the city or state in which she was playing. It was kind of her version of a love letter the city/state! I loved it!!

Brandy

She's always done covers! She did "Bette Davis Eyes" during Speak Now tour and some other! She covered Mumford and sons "white blank page" , she's covered "can't stop loving you" by Phil Collins, and I'm sure a bunch others I can't think of right now. They are all AMAZING and definitely worth looking into!

LanaJulie33

OK now we definitely need to listen to fearless Taylor's Version and then watch Journey to Fearless!! It's half concert half doc and you get to see her and the band on their first official tour together. It's sooooo fun and sooooo cute. You'll love it 🫶

LanaJulie33

I just think that it’s to do with experience. Also we have to remember she just turned 21 during this tour and her vocal chords have not fully developed. It’s amazing for that age though…every song on this album was solo written and she played like 5?? Instruments during the concert like whatttt that’s CRAZY

Swiftie13❤️

The covers for this tour were like the surprise songs during the Eras Tour or the surprise guests during 1989...she sang a different cover almost every night starting about two months into the tour. I think it ended up being over 50 songs altogether. She's always said she wants to give her fans something different to look forward to at live shows since everyone already knows the setlist and the stage design before they even get there. As for the production difference...this was her second full tour of her career and it took place 12 years ago. I'm sure the budget wasn't as limitless as it is now and the technology wasn't as good. The set for the Eras Tour included image projection, laser lights, pyrotechnics...a lot that wasn't available in 2011. The rest of it I think comes down to confidence. She was still getting negative feedback about her singing ability and her dancing...I think she was focused more on getting the notes right and not missing any cues than on the emotion and energy.

Wanda Smith

This was the one TS concert I went to when it came to LA. it was such a great show. But It was her third album, so Im pretty sure she was already well established as a Country Star.

Julie Fish

Loved watching this with you! Also heard you mention you watched This is us! Was this a reaction and if so are you gonna go down the 1D rabbit hole! Hope so cause that would be cool to watch those boys were pretty fun 💜

Rissa

Yeah I was trying to word it in a way people would understand haha

Heida

I believe she did covers on this tour as a way to keep things exciting for the crowd, since you can pretty much look online and see spoilers about the entire show before you even attend. On the Speak Now Tour live album you can hear her covers of Bette Davis Eyes, I Want You Back, and The Sweet Escape. I think the cover was of an artist from that city/state. After this tour she started playing a random song of her own instead of a cover, known as the "surprise song section"

hjbjms

Loved watching this with you! I've seen portions of different parts of it, but never the full concert. Thank you!

Melody Peterson

had a great time 🥰 (but also early days really make me want Fearless to be the next album reaction; but also evermore needs her flowers 💐. feeling very torn 😟

marisol

Also the reason she did covers is she always has liked to do something special for each city. This tour she did a different cover from an artist that came from the city she was in. 1989 she had special guests at every show. Reputation and Eras tour she did her own surprise songs every night.

Elizabeth

I don't think it's entirely from the editing. Eras has much more momentum to it, because she's worked hard on her stamina and covers the stage so well and there are times she only sings part of the song, but the transitions are definitely longer in person, yes.

Ems

The breaks were way longer during the eras tour but they cut them down and condensed it for time. She also probably has more people down to make quick changes faster. Also the set for the eras tour is more technologically advanced. So set changes happen faster.

Elizabeth

Yeah it's actually a pretty common thing for people to cover song at concerts. I think it's started being a common occurrence in around 2010

Jay Johnston

Also I'd like to say that the one thing I've always loved about Taylor Swift even when I wasn't listening to her is no matter how much things changed the one thing that hasn't is how much she appreciates and adores her fans.

Jay Johnston

The acoustic set where Taylor just sits and plays multiple songs in a row while playing her guitar is generally there to give her band a break. Darren Criss for instance does an acoustic set and randomly plays a cover of a song by an artist associated with the city in which he is currently in. For example when I saw him in Pittsburgh he performed Genie in a Bottle by Christina Aguilera since she is from the Pittsburgh area. When he was at the stop closest to where Taylor was raised he performed You Belong With Me.

Wayne Joy

Something I haven't seen mentioned about the difference in outfit change times(though if it has I'm sorry I missed it) is the difference in the type of changes she's doing. For the Speak Now tour she was actually fully changing. For Eras the dresses were buttoned or tied and she was actually changing outfits on stage from the videos I've seen online

Jay Johnston

Oh the way it was worded it made me think you you were saying that Scooter and Scott (Not her dad Scott) were the same person. Sorry 😅

Jay Johnston

Sadly Audrey, you won't be able to do another comparison with Reputation Stadium Tour as this ran its 5 years and is now no longer on Netflix. Have you done 1989 World Tour as this was the next album after Speak Now to get a concert video release. Red unfortunately did not get one because of problems with director I believe. This performance was also edited from various performances. In total there were 110 performances on that tour in 2011/2012 and revenue was approx $120m. Compare that to Eras Tour which has so far grossed over $1 bn for just 60 shows with still another 91 shows to go.

clansome

the eras movie definitely edited down transitions, especially the one as she got ready for red. im sure experience plays a part too but also the eras tour structure feels a lot more forgiving with its formatting especially for editing the transitions.

marisol

I think the breaks were due to a combination of things. Taylor really enjoyed being very theatrical with her staging around this time (the band stand, the wedding ceremony and the huge bridge for example) and this all took time to set up between songs. This was also only her second headline tour even though it was her third album so she probably wasn’t quite as slick with the transitions etc. I also think that might be why her stamina wasn’t quite as good too. She’s a seasoned performer now since the Eras Tour was filmed 12 years later. I do think that it was easier to coordinate and edit out transitions for the Eras Tour though because they were mostly all done between eras rather than between random songs so every time she came back on stage it was almost like a new concert. With the covers I think she just really enjoyed doing them. She did different cover songs depending on where she was because she did songs by artists from that area. For example she did an Alanis Morissette song in Toronto because she’s Canadian. Kinda similar to how she brought out special guests on the 1989 and Rep tours and sung some of their own songs with them.

Susan Deans

I know 👍🏻 That's why I mentioned them both because not everyone realises Scooter's real name is Scott or that her dad's name is also Scott.

Heida

Oh that’s cool with her surprise songs!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Yea I think so too!

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

I have a feeling it would be VERY cool to break down the diffeences

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Oh so you think it’s from the editing difference?

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Yea I agree. She is far more experienced now than back then

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Haha! Yea I felt bad afterwards. I told him I’m sorry for being so loud but he wasn’t worried.

Audrey McDonald ( Songs From A Suitcase)

Hey just a quick correction. Scooter Braun and Scott Borchetta are not the same person however they do seems to be friends

Jay Johnston

I watched Danny's Hereditary reaction before this and I could hear you in the background and instantly knew what you were filming (also because you talked about it in the Cardigan reaction). 😂 I didn't see this concert in full until quite recently (I had watched most of the performances though) and as much as I love Eras tour, there is something so wholesome, cute and personal about this show. I do agree though that Taylor seems a lot more relaxed now and is not trying to live up to this 'good country girl image'. She had a lot more say than most mainstream artists, especially at that age, but she was still under her old record label which was run by Scott Borchetta (who sold her masters to Scooter Braun). I also agree that Dear John is by far the best performance (the facial expressions and head tilt she does at the end kill me), along with Haunted which is one of my favourite songs. I kinda rediscovered it a few years ago and had never seen this performance, which I absolutely LOVE because Taylor is so extra and it's so musical theatre-esque (most of the show is). Speak Now was Taylor's third full album so she definitely had enough material. She just liked doing covers and many, even bigger, artists do at least one cover during their show. Sometimes she even brought the original artist to sing with her (during 1989 tour as well, which you also reacted to) whereas during Eras and Reputation tour she switched it up by doing surprise songs of her own, different ones each show. Also, I think the transition time was longer because she didn't have the stamina/training she has now, like at Eras tour she's literally changing on stage behind the dancers or something. But they also usually edit the breaks out of the official version, especially for Eras because it's already so long. Back to December wasn't on her Eras tour usual set list but she did perform it as a surprise song in Denver on July 15th. She also did the mashup with OneRepublic's Apologize at the American Music Awards in 2010, but here she also added her song You're Not Sorry from Fearless. Fearless (the song) is mashed up with Jason Marx's I'm Yours with elements of Train's Hey Soul Sister. She also did Drops of Jupiter, another Train song, during the show that was filmed. What's interesting is that during the Speak Now album reaction you said When Emma Falls In Love reminded you of another song, you just couldn't remember what and thought it was a John Mayer song (which David found funny). Since that was originally written back then I can only assume she liked the song and was heavily influenced by it. Abigail is Taylor's best friend. She was in Miss Americana and several of her music videos, including Fifteen. You missed the first line of the second verse "You sit in class next to a red-head named Abigail and soon enough you're best friends". The later lyric is "Abigail gave everything she had to a boy who changed his mind". People assumed she meant she gave her virginity and thought that was problematic because it suggested that your virginity is all you have. But IF that is what she meant (she could have been saying she gave everything she had emotionally) then I think that's just a commentary on how society views virginity, especially for girls, as if that somehow makes them unpure or unworthy. Also, didn't remember the "Greater than dating the boy on the football team" line until now. I hope she sings Fifteen the next time Travis is in the crowd (though she sang it with Abigail in the audience back in May). The balcony during Love Story, the banjo and some of the outfits from the show were in the I Can See You music video (which also starred Joey King and Presley Cash who were in the Mean music video). Lastly, I freaked out when you mentioned One Direction's This Is Us! Is that coming soon? And are you reacting to Friends? So exciting!!

Heida

I think it has to do with the amount of experience with Speak Now compared to the Eras Tour. Taylor has been performing for many years and she has 10 albums and with this tour, she only has 3. Eras was a very unique tour. I think with the transitions were quicker because it was left in while i believe, they edited out the timing and used the transition for the next era. It seems like this tour was edited the way you would watch a tour with the long transitions.

carly powell

Audrey has reacted to the 1989 World Tour.

carly powell

Yeah, I agree that the Eras movie has transitions reduced, but that they were also generally shorter than the older ones. There's probably still about half an hour or so that's missing from the Eras show, even with the extended version. Over time, she's got more practiced and, on the bigger stages like rep and Eras, I think she has different areas to reduce the time taken... plus the rocket sled! I wondered if maybe it wasn't that clear in the recording that she walked through the crowd to a B stage, so needed to do the same to get bk and wasn't able to move far for the songs. Also, they spliced in parts of different shows, so I'm not sure how indicative of the actual time at each individual concert the journey out and back was. I think that people found it something really special, so they didn't really mind the time or the fact you couldn't see her as clearly in the moment. Speak Now's tour was going on at the time when she was coming out of her relationship with Jake (she started All Too Well during one of the soundchecks), so that might be why some of the songs seemed to be hitting hard. Plus, as you said in your video, she was much closer to the events she was singing about too, so thins were probably more raw. She's done a bunch of covers - it was actually quite a staple until rep and Eras (although rep had a couple of special guests). Speak Now was the peak of her doing covers of other people's songs though, I think, because she did one each night - often an artist from the location she was visiting. It was a way to make each show unique. She also had some special guests. 1989 Tour had loads of special guests too. This playlist has a bunch of them (https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLuf6Dn2aCh8zG0O8kwDnR-z_thbk4JqMV&si=GJuwSc84GdbZbl0I) I think the idea of comparisons between tours is really cool. Shes done so much work to improve over time. I'd also be really interested in what you think of the remaining full tours - 1989 and Red. I know you've done a few songs from 1989 already, but I think seeing the full show in one would be different. There isn't an official Red Tour, but there's this fan-made one that's very good (https://youtu.be/pfrBBHPIzAc?si=UJJNrK0htiZxJa1R).

Just taking a brief pause after, “Our Song” to say there is still a WHOLE LOTTA God, Church, & Amen in Country music today…Along with drinkin’, trucks, old dogs, & Mamas. 😉 ALWAYS has been, ALWAYS will be! It’s an unspoken rule in the genre. I don’t make the “rules,” I just relay the “rules.” 😂 And, 💯 TRUST, this Bama girl knows exactly what she’s speaking on when it comes to Country music. I’m IMMERSED in this genre on a daily! Personally, I LOVE it!!! 🪕🤠 Also, just a side note, and from the p.o.v. of a singer/songwriter, because 1. This Fall will make 14 yrs. this song has been out for our auditory pleasure, and 2. Every 1 of those 14 yrs. I’ve needed to vent about this. It’s my one & only Taylor pet peeve, period…all the way around! And it ALL boils down to ONE word. From the 1st time I heard this song, I never understood WHY she wrote…“And we’re on the phone/And he talks real SLOW/‘Cause it’s late and his Mama don’t know!” Why not alter “SLOW” with “LOW?” 🤔 Musicality, it takes nothing away (save 1 letter); only adds to the song, AND it’s just common damn sense! Yes, someone can “talk real SLOW,” but how would talking “slow” keep him from getting trouble with his Mama? 🤷🏻‍♀️ Now, if he were talking “real LOW,” THAT makes better sense, because it’s less likely she’d hear him talking, right? Sorry for the tangent. My ADHD is kickin’ my ass today! Idk…I just never understood her word choice there, but I absolutely LOVE old school TayTay, regardless of the ☝🏼 word in ALL of the thousands of lyrics she’s composed in her ENTIRE 10 album discography, that irks me a bit. 🫶🏼 Lol…Sorry y’all!🙄

Megan Monroe

she has performed every speak now song except for superman and 2 vault tracks on eras either on the set list or in the surprise song set. i’d say tiktok is the best place to look for those cause the full videos and better quality are on there. i’d love to see your opinions on the similarities and differences between both cause the difference between almost 15 years ago to now is insane!

Katie

she did perform back to december as a surprise song on eras! there’s videos all over youtube and tiktok. i think that’d be really cool if you did like a long video or something comparing her singing a song from a past tour to her performance on eras cause you’re right her vocal strength on eras is so much stronger and more grown than past ones!

Katie

The Era s tour film did reduce the transition time from each era to less than it was live in person. With that said the transitions on the Eras tour were I believe still quicker than any of her other tours that I experienced. She definitely had enough content to fill up a concert with her own material at this point in time I think she just likes switching it up. Instead of her doing solo covers on the 1989 and Reputation tours she had surprise musical guests at almost every show and would perform their songs with them. Eras tour she is kind of like her own musical guest performing 2 different surprise songs each show.

KyraB

Someone tell me if I’m mistaken but the eras tour cut out a lot of the VCR and the breaks between costume changes etc that’s why it seemed like it was nonstop. Also she had enough material for a 2 hour concert, she had 3 full albums out by that point but I think she just wanted to do mashups and they’re pretty iconic! Maybe it’s me but I don’t think her concerts changed that much apart from the scale and her dancing more. Eras tour was the anomaly bc the format itself was different to her other concerts since she went through all her eras instead of just one album like she did before. She has main stage songs that are upbeat, she does an acoustic set, she meets with fans (she can’t do that now with such big stadiums but that was the norm), she goes back to the main stage to finish.
