SUPER FANS: 'BEAUTIFUL GHOSTS" TAYLOR (EXTENDED EDITION)

Comments

That “other” person influencing it was Andrew Lloyd Webber! 😆 I do hear a lot of his style in the song- but agree it doesn’t really sound like the way she would do it.

Taylor needed to have a british accent in the film so it's showing in this song

I get what you’re saying about it not sounding as much like Taylor but to be fair she didn’t write it for herself OR by herself. She wrote it alongside Andrew Lloyd Webber and I really feel like you can hear a lot of his influence in the song. It was also written for another actress to sing as part of a musical so they had to write it with that actress’s strengths and weaknesses in mind as well as make it fit in with the overall themes/storyline of the musical. Definitely not my favourite of hers or of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s (or even close to it) but I do still think it’s a pretty good song for what it is. Also the English pronunciation I assume is due to Cats being set in London. Sounds weird coming from Taylor though.

This was in 2019 so not that long ago and she co-wrote this song with Andrew Lloyd Weber for the film version for Francesca Hayward to perform in the film and this is the end credits version. There is definitely a difference when Taylor writes a song for herself to perform verses for someone else to perform with someone else. She performs “Macavity” in the film and I think she did a fantastic job in an overly weird production with weird CGI and scale.

(I don't mean that as anything against Francesca Hayward, but very few people can be Taylor Swift and I feel like this is very much a result of Taylor writing a song for someone who just can't do what she does, all of the potential and full Taylor is just under the surface, but she has to try to keep it contained)

Maddie

I enjoy the concept of the song but I think it's really clear that it's written for someone else to sing within the musical (Francesca Hayward plays Victoria in the movie and she sings the song) so Taylor has to tone down her own singing/writing to accommodate for the fact that Francesca is a dancer, not a professional singer I feel like if Taylor had been allowed to just write the song for herself she would have been able to really embrace the potential that it had, like what you were saying comparing it to Defying Gravity and She Used To Be Mine (I would also love for current Taylor to rerecord it or even just perform it as a surprise Eras Tour song just to see what she could do with it)

Maddie

I am not super familiar with the style of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s music, but I have to wonder if some of what you’re hearing that doesn’t sound like Taylor is an effort for this song to gel with the rest of the Cats soundtrack (since this was written for the film version)…?

Andrea

I really don’t like this song. Especially within the context of the movie.
