Iām just now seeing your reaction to this and it sooo funny! So, Matheus is my cousin by marriage, his mom married my uncle way back in I think 2005 or 2006 (itās been a long time, honestly canāt remember lol) and I remember when he told me he was cast in this show! We were so excited for him! Heād seen me post about Glee on Facebook and was like āyouāre gonna love this!ā I actually met up with him and Hannah at a Dennyās in LA before we went to see Glee Live, man what a blast from the past! Lol, I know heās not your favorite lol, I can tell, but we truly thought heād be a great fit for the show. Canāt wait to see more!

I personally think you're a bit wrong when you say they casted wrong people bc they didn't know what to do, had never been in a studio or couldn't be triple threats like the glee cast.
When Ryan and co casted the show in the first place, they literally only had Lea and Matthew that were on Broadway. Most of them, it was their first acting/singing job.
Cory didn't even sing on his audition tape, bc he didn't know he could sing.
Heather was first casted as a filler cheerio bc she had to teach the single ladies dance to Kurt. Then she had a name, some lines, and by season 2 she had an episode named after her and was getting singing lessons to have her first solos.
When we saw season 1, Naya wasn't even a regular and we could never had predicted how big her part would be.
Lea had never sang pop or most genres (outside of broadway) before glee and by episode 4 of s1 she was singing Rihanna.
Amber apparently never belted before glee. and so many more examples...
They clearly were trying to replicate what happened when they casted the show in 2008. And as you said in the outro, they clearly made some of them caricatures of glee characters. I don't think it was essentially a bad thing that the casting was innocent. Bc imo that's what is making glee work. Of course the real cast are triple threats. But since you saw the show, you know who got in. And honestly, I wouldn't say any of the glee project cast that was on glee seemed bad or unprofessional on screen. Imo they blended well with the cast. Especially Damian, considering his first ep was big and about him + interacting with all the big cast. And he was bottom 3 on his first glee project episode lol.

This was definitely not the end of Bryce's career. Funny enough, I think Bryce is one of the most famous cast member from the 2 seasons, that was not on glee. He got eliminated first, but I swear a few years ago he had a song that was about Drew Barrymore and even in France it was on the radio lol. I still listen to him from time to time. He goes by the name "Bryce Vine". He really found his sound and I think he's a cool artist.
I love that Damian is rehearsing the glee cover of Finn "Jesse's girl" and not the original lol.
And yes, Samuel Larsen is literally so pretty.

It really did. I think they fine tuned the process as the season went on, but if I recall those first couple of episodes I wasn't sure they were on the right track with the competition. I remember before they started airing the show I figured it was mostly based on what happened with Chris Colfer - he went in to audition for Artie, and he wasn't a good fit for it but Ryan and the other producers really just fell in love with him and ditched a different character that wasn't fleshing out well and created Kurt just for Chris. I think the show runners loved the idea of doing that again. Discovering a hidden gem that could so inspire them. But they didn't think about how that magic happened, or how to successfully recreate it. At this point Glee was at it's highest popularity, and Chris had been raking in acting awards (including a Golden Globe). But that kind of success had just as much to do with his acting skills as it did with the show's writing and directing.

I appreciate your perspective! Your bit about how backwards it feels for only the bottom 3 to perform for Ryan is exactly what will disadvantage at least 1 contestant this season. The more you perform for Ryan I believe the more potential he sees in you IF youāve been acting on his feedback. So compare that to a contestant who doesnāt meet Ryan until mid season, that can certainly be a challenge.

Some of the last chance donāt choices are so interesting! As the show goes on, I think youāll notice that sometimes they will give contestants a song sung by Lea, Cory, Amber, etc. and it makes you wonder if theyāre purposefully doing that to see if the contestants will bring that āmain character energyā

Yes! I did mention that. But I said since sheās already watched the first ep it wouldnāt makes sense to go back unless she wants to. The second seasons pre 1st ep is a little more organized. It feels more like a first episode. Whereas season 1 had the first half of that episode dedicated to interviews talking about glee and then raced through the boot camp/auditions. So i just wanted to make sure I mentioned it before she even started season 2 :)

From the bottom three and overall, I think I would have cut either Bryce or Ellis. Bryce had way too much attitude and Ellis was way too focused on the fact that she looked younger. They actually advised Ellis to tone down her "baby" persona and expressions. Damian was the most likable out of the three of them. But it's funny that he says he has never heard ofĀ Jessie's GirlĀ even though it was sung byĀ FinnĀ inĀ S1, and especially since he is seen in the audience ofĀ Glee: The 3D Concert MovieĀ duringĀ Silly Love Songs (and therefore saw Cory sing it live). I personally liked Matheus, but I get what you're saying and I did NOT think he should have won the homework assignment. I also liked Alex (duh), Samuel, Cameron and Hannah in this episode.
And so true about this being a reality show first. I like shows like Idol, The Voice, X Factor etc. but, especially as I've gotten older, I'm painfully aware of the fact that it's a TV show where it's edited and 90% of it is scripted.
Fun fact: Husband and wife Nikki Anders, vocal director, and Adam Anders, Glee music producer, wrote and originally sang Roots Before Branches, the song Rachel sings in the S3 finale. Adam also wrote Loser Like Me and Get It Right.
Also, I don't know why this is counted as the first episode when there is one before this, showing how they made the cut to the final 12.

I've only seen the first episode of this show. Excited to watch it and see you react. I'm such a picky "Simon Cowell" also. Ellis just couldn't find her character. Damian was soooo nervous! And the other guy was too cocky. I adore the redheaded girl. (Need to get the names down). I wholeheartedly agree that it is a reality show and goes by those rules. Gotta keep the drama going!
Would you ever do a The Voice watch party? Curious how you would handle the auditions.

Iām rewatching this and I just think itās so funny that Damian is like āIāve never heard this song, I donāt know who sings it, never heard even a lyricā meanwhile heās listening to Coryās version that he did in season 1 of Glee šš this happens so much on this show where the contestant will say theyāve never heard of a song but it was literally performed on glee. Like did they watch the show or just see the audition call notice and just sign up š Iām curious cause they make it seem like everyone is such a die hard fan.

This was really fun re-watching this with you. Marissa, Lindsey, Alex and Cameron were always my favourites and I would have actually cut either Bryce or Ellis so I was fine with either one!
After watching this I thought it would be really fun to see you do this with Mamma Mia: I Have A Dream which is a similar competition that was on recently in the UK to find the next Sophie and Sky for the West End production of Mamma Mia. Amber Riley was actually a judge on it. Not sure if there is an easy way for you to see it but if there is a way it would be really fun to see your perspective!

All 5 songs ended up on later on Glee . Big spender was done by Sugar , Just the way you are was sung mainly by Cory as was Jessie's girl . Lea sang firework and I think it was Kitty who was featured in signed sealed delivered I' m yours .

It was really interesting to see this again. I found your interpretation really interesting. You're points about their characterizations were spot on. I do seem to recall something like the cast members had to come up with their own characters - they didn't get assigned the labels. I think it's why some of the characterizations were so strange - these kids were not really mentally prepared or perhaps not trained enough to be able to fully form a character that they would be prepared to run with for the whole season, and keeping that character up ALL THE TIME. It made me think that this reality show was probably one of the most mentally challenging because the premise is that you are trying to get Ryan Murphy's attention and basically feed him an idea that he can use to build up a proper character. It will be interesting to see this again and see how the cast progresses.

I love watching this for the 1st time this way! Iām very big on voicing my opinions of competition shows so having a place where I can share that and read others is very fun for me!
If I had to cut someone based on the firework number alone, it would probably be Damien. His voice just didnāt fit the song. Based on the 3 performances, I actually initially choose Bryce to go home. I guess Iām biased towards Damien as he is in the show and I enjoyed Ellisās vocal performance the most. But after hearing your thoughts and reflecting on it, I kind of agree with you. Ellis is very talented but she needs to gain more confidence in herself. Out of everyone here, I think sheās the least ready for the big times. Iām curious to see how she does next episode but I donāt think she will get very far. Tho between Ellis and Bryce, Iām kinda indifferent.
Iām excited to see more solos so each person can truly show off their voice more. For example, Damien has a great voice but I donāt think it was the best fit for any of the songs in the episode. I donāt think Jessieās Girl was the best song for him. And I agree with you about the short guy. (Blanking on names) I can tell that his voice has great potential but I donāt like the person heās trying to be. Itās like heās trying to make his character/voice bigger than he is. I think the main reason why he wasnāt in the bottom 3 was because he had a bigger part in the music video and got to show off more.
BTW, I am loving this Simon Cal side of you! Itās been to long since Iāve seen one of your vocal reaction videos.

Omg I knew Damien and Samuel were on the Glee project but HOW DID I NOT KNOW THAT ALEX WAS?! I was sooo excited when I saw him.

Did you remember that Cory (Finn) also sang Jesse's Girl on the show. I think they made the right choice by cutting Bryce. Attitude is everything especially when you're working. That was a dumb move on his part. I personally thought the other two had stronger voices.

I've always hated how they wanted the contestants to be on this show. They're asking people to basically come up with their own characters with no direction. If they initially gave them a character to try and work with, maybe adjusted over time, but it would really test adaptability as well as seeing how they can play a character. Not every person on Glee had a role completely written around Ryan Murphey's first impressions of them. It feels awkward and I feel the contestants aren't given enough direction or vocal coaching to prepare them for being on a show like Glee. Yes they need to be professionals, but I'm pretty sure all of them have never acted on T.V before. Plus not to mention, only the bottom three get to perform in front of Ryan Murphey, the person who will create your character and choose who goes on the show, that feels really backwards.

LHP is my queen! I love her so much. I love that she's come so far both vocally and also professionally. I mean you can't get much better than playing everyone's favorite green girl ON BROADWAY. Plus Janis in Mean Girls and now Rose in Tatanique.

Love that you are watching the Glee Project now!!!!! Lindsay was always and will always be my favorite and I absolutely hate that they make her out to be the bad guy (you will see more in later episodes what I mean) The other contenders have even said that some stuff that the show made sound like it was unscripted and not a part of the show actually was scripted and a part of it. I do enjoy this season and Lindsay and Marissa are both my favorites of this show!!!!!

Itās so funny watching this now and seeing Damian. He was/is a member of the Irish group Celtic Thunder before and after his time on this show and Glee. He also has a solo career, is married, and expecting his first child. Damian, Cameron, and Hannah were always my favorites on this show!
Jenn
2024-01-12 02:29:47 +0000 UTC
it was cool seeing how you approached this and now understanding the difference between a vocal coach vs. vocal director.
It's REALLY hard to not be biased to say Alex is my favorite. I'd say first impressions, I really liked Cameron and maybe Marissa. As soon as he started to push back during the video, Bryce was a turn-off. In terms of a show character, the idea of pushing him in the "sensitive artist" box would've been interesting.
Even though it's a reality show, I don't think they kept Ellis in for the drama, I think they took Bryce out first because he caused drama by interrupting the shoot. It really was a toss up between the two of them.
Ellis needed confidence and maturity. It's easy to see how she could definitely be in the glee club but in terms of writing for her character... there wasn't anything to draw from other than "looks like a child."

2024-01-12 02:27:24 +0000 UTC
This is my first time seeing this. I think on both fronts, I would have eliminated Ellis. Her final performance made it a little harder, but I think she was the weakest overall.
I canāt help but to put my reality brain thinking cap on and say that beyond the pressure cooker the competition is, being on reality tv is just a whole different ballpark. It can genuinely change how you act and there is so much interference by production to cause drama as you alluded to Audrey, that I always take how people come across with a grain of salt. Discernment with these kinds of shows is a great tool! Even Bryce said (and I am paraphrasing) that this competition made him act entirely different. Iām sure that he would have gotten it together if he was given a second chance. Most of his attitude came from his own insecurities and shortcomings. Either way, even if he continued to have an attitude, it would be interesting to watch lol
Also, Audrey pointed out what his true character would be and I think that would have been an interesting addition to the cast plus no one else sounded/looked like him. I also canāt help but to think that they just pushed the character they gave him onto Jake an entire season later.

Iām not going to lie, I was a little disappointed at first when we said we were going to watch this, Iāve never seen it. But honestly, I really enjoyed watching you critique and comment. Iām quite glad weāre watching this now.
Iām with you on Ellis, not a fan.
Why was Damien given Jessieās girl (I love that song btw) when it really isnāt similar to any of the songs he did on glee? Ik his glee role obviously came after but surely they had an idea of the peopleās strengths and weaknesses and I know nothing about singing but I loved Damienās songs on glee and I was not a fan at all of his cover of Jessieās girl (other than him saying he wishes he was Jessieās girl). It just sounded so wrong and just, ugh.

Thank you so much for doing this! I'm excited to see your reaction for the upcoming episodes.

I love that you have so much to critique! Hopefully you learn more and more on how to do the judging in the best way possible.
When I watched the show for the first time, I crushed on Damien, Cameron and a little bit on Matius.
Iām only defending Damien because when I first watched, I knew he was in a popular male group in Ireland called Celtic Thunder. So, in not sure if they asked him to pretend not to know things or what.
My bottom 3: Ellis, Bryce and Samuel. And eliminated Ellis.

This was so enjoyable! I knew you were going to kill it, and you even exceeded my expectations. This is playing to all your experience and strengths, and I love hearing why you come to the conclusions you do. I 100% agree with Audrey about Mattheus. Just ick. I didn't understand why he won the first challenge. I remember being disappointed when they cut Bryce, but watching it again I totally understand their decision. I feel at this point we don't know any of the kids well enough. I mean, Alex is Alex and did not stand out at all at this point. They did do Lindsay dirty, but the "death threats" were not necessarily because of her attitude if you read the interview. It was about the incident we will see later. I can't wait to hear your views on that. Buckle up, buttercup. It's going to be a bumpy yet entertaining ride - and I am here for experiencing it with you!

Part 2:
It is SO jarring seeing young Lindsay! I got to have a Zoom 1:1 with her back in 2020 and she told me some horror stories of filming this show - notably that this Season 1 cast were actually staying out in some wilderness and the Season 2 cast were spoiled with better facilities lol. I also saw her as Janis in Mean Girls on tour last year. SUCH A TREAT. It's so special watching this show, seeing a young girl not knowing that in less than 10 years she'll be starring as Elphaba on Broadway. :')
I also agree McKynleigh was so underused in this episode! Fun fact: she is actually Alex's understudy in "Shucked" on Broadway! It's so cool knowing that 2 out of the 3 Lulu's are Glee Project alums!

I am SO excited we're finally here! It's actually interesting cuz I think this episode has been shortened from when it originally aired. I distinctly remember the contestants all choosing their yearbook "Most likely to" characters. So that makes it interesting hearing your feedback about how some of those characters just didn't fit the performers, because for some it was definitely self-sabotage. I really do think Ellis was leaning too far into her child-like appearance. Hannah characterized herself as the Class Clown but it wasn't mentioned in this shortened version, but that's the reason Cameron outed her as the weakest of the group because "the funny only goes so far."
I would pick the same bottom 3, but what surprised me is my perspective has shifted about Bryce. My 15-year-old self would have eliminated Bryce. But, my current 28-year-old self would save Bryce and eliminate Ellis. The reason for that is what Bryce said to Ryan: "I've never seen anyone who sings like me." I didn't start doing theatre until I was 16, and it took a few more years for theatre to really become a true passion. I'm a bass, and there are just virtually no roles out there for bass performers. I look at all of my favorite shows of the past few years: Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Mean Girls, The Prom, Mrs. Doubtfire, &Juliet - there's not a single leading/featured male role in those casts (besides maybe Lance in &Juliet) that I could do without key changes or significant vocal modification. Even in ensembles, I definitely am quite used to having to work my way around the high parts, as Bryce put it. People often say "representation matters" when it comes to race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, religion, and size, but for me the area I feel underrepresented the most in the performing arts is vocal type. Out of all the Broadway shows/tours I've seen, the ONLY bass role I've seen is Hades in Hadestown. And basses shouldn't be pidgeonholed into only playing dark villains. So yeah, it WOULD have been nice to have a guy on Glee who sings low. And I LOVED your characterization of him not being a heartbreaker, but a sensitive artist. I think my 15-year-old self didn't latch onto Bryce because he just came off as another jock-type dude (we already had enough of those in Finn, Puck, Mike, and Sam). But if that was the spin, I would've been down for that!
I adore Hannah. She was my favorite from the start and I'm so glad you see the same special things in her that I do. <3

I will say take the interactions between the contestants and what is said and done during interviews and try not really pigeonholing that these are truly what they are like as people. Numerous contestants have come forward about being forced to say and do things that would make it a more dramatic ārealityā show that they never really wanted to do. Lindsay Pearce is one of my favorites on this show and also one of my favorite Elphabas I have seen in Wicked on Broadway

First of all there is no public voting at all for this series. There was supposed to be one winner with a 7 episode arc and we ended up with three contestants who were in a whole lot of episodes and a 4th who was in 2 episodes. It becomes obvious later that decisions are primarily being made based on who Ryan Murphy thinks he can write for. Bryce probably got cut because the Glee producers don't want to have to put up with an attitude problem from somebody who isn't actually already a star.

it's pretty funny that theyre saying only one of them is gonna get to be on glee when 3 of them are in a good deal of episodes and lindsay gets solos in 2 episodes. I find it hard to judge contestants now because I first watched this when it came out (at 10 years old) and fell in love with damian mcginty after he accidentally sang "I wish I was jessie's girl"

The editors did do Lindsay really dirty, but the result is still that I could never really root for her in the show, even though she was good. She was a 20 year old theatre kid who knew she has talent, and those tend to be kinda obnoxious. Nobody made her say obnoxious stuff. I think she was genuinely trying to be the new Rachel, probably under the assumption that Lea was leaving.
I would have cut Bryce too, honestly. He was too much work. You donāt want an actor on a show who needs be given pep talks and pandered to, to the point that a top choreographer like Zach who has no reason to take notes from this new kid, just says screw it, because itās easier. No time for it. Can you imagine doing that on the daily? Everyone, take five, Bryce doesnāt like the script. No. They would can him so fast.
Bryce would be my entire bottom three. Bryce, Bryce, and Bryce. He had to go. Worry about everyone else later.

I would have cut Ellis. She did the worst this week, but saved herself with her vocals on the final song outshining the other two. I understand why Bryce went home because arguing with the directors week 1 is something I wouldnāt be able to overlook unless he did something amazing which he didnāt. He did have more room to grow then some of the others and wish he had more time. They made it really clear in the press for this that they were hoping for another Chris Colfer experience where they find someone with next to no experience who blows them away so thatās why Iām sure more experienced talented people got cut in the show auditions.

i'm along the same wavelengths as you, i would have cut ellis (both from the bottom three and if there was no bottom three and i was picking from the whole cast). there are just stronger voices, stronger characters and overall people that are more preprared for it than ellis was. i will say (as someone who as watched the entirety of season 1 and season 2) some of the people that were very weak at the start end up being huge standouts near the end/of the season.

Ok I have so many things to say. First off just wanna say Iām so excited for this. Ok second, I think this show is so hard to judge because like Robert said, itās not about talent. Performing is like a very small part of the process when you think of the big picture of glee. I mean there are many people on glee that donāt have the BEST voices. The real challenge is all the stuff that goes into behind the scenes. So attitudes and how you interact on set is a huge factor. Itās also about how fast you can learn something and take direction. So the best singer, actor, or dancer may not always make it as far as letās say American Idol. The other big HUGE factor is āare they inspiring me to create a character?ā those characters they were given for the first assignment werenāt their be all end all characters. They want to see how they adapt to different things and maybe it will give them insight to things they can write for their character. You will see that the characters they portray in the music videos change throughout the season. So, with all that being said, I personally wouldāve chosen Bryce to go home. I think he slowed down a lot of the choreography process which is a huge deal in those situations. And they talked about the attitude thing. Personally I donāt really like his voice it was kinda knock off John Mayer. But thatās more just a personal opinion. I think the MAIN reason he was let go is because he wasnāt inspiring to Ryan. I think Ryan is inspired more by Damien and Ellis. And while I agree I think Ellis also deserved to go home cause her attitude sucks and sheās overall just not at the level and some others. I think even though her character choice sucked it was atleast a jumping off point. And I think they want to see what they can improve upon direction wise with her. But sheās obviously on thin ice. I think Damian was the obvious one to stay personally cause I think you can do a lot with his character. Ryan was already making Irish jokes which is like quintessential glee. I also think heās really nice to work with and has a good attitude. I just think Bryce just fell a little shorter of the inspiration part. And one thing I think we forget when watching reality tv is that we donāt see everything or every interaction. Itās only 30is mins. And a lot of stuff they may not even have film of. So we can never REALLY know why they send someone home. LASTLY for next season there is actually a pre episode to the first that goes through the whole process of casting the show. They go to the auditions and everything. It wouldnāt make sense to watch this seasons since youāve already started. But itās a fun little bonus ep that would be fun for next season. Oh and ps. Mckinleigh was actually Alexās understudy in the Broadway musical Shucked. Cool little connection. Full circle.

"11 years later, I still get hate mail sent to the theaters I work at and DMs telling me to kill myself," she said. Lindsay was made to look like a villain. Huge talent, pretty big on Broadway this days if I'm being correct (Wicked, Rent etc.)

You have seen 4 of the cast members from this season on the show.
I would have cut Ellis as well. The whole "She looks like a kid" thing is weird cause it's not like the show cares about hiring actors that look like teens. Puck just straight up looks 30 through the whole show. I love Lindsay's voice but I hate her personality which is very Rachel.
