Jennifer Hudson won best supporting actress for her very first role!! There was some controversy because it was also the first film to receive the most nominations and not be nominated for Best Picture or Best Director. Eddie Murphy was also nominated for his work and I still to this day think he should have won. It was actually considered an upset that he didn’t win. It can’t be overstated how shocked I was by his performance in this film. As you said, it’s mostly a singing role, and I knew he had a music career, but I didn’t know just how good his voice was and how he’d be able to pull off all of the live performances, not to mention the complexities of a character like Jimmy. Jimmy Early feels like a real person to me now haha!

She’s an amazing actress too and so underrated. I’m a big Bey fan through and through but I def know this was Jennifer Hudson’s movie. The entire cast absolutely killed it

Due to legalities, as it was originally running on broadway, they had to be extremely careful and say it wasn’t even though it was so overtly almost beat for beat The Supremes story. They even casted Diana Ross look alike, Linda Leilani Brown as Deena. When they made the movie, they decided to really crank up the similarities to the point where Motown and its artists were very upset with the movie and the cast for a few years. Also, the woman who sang at Jimmy’s funeral is Loretta Devine, she’s been in a lot of things, she started on broadway where she originated the role of Lorell (Anika Noni Rose’s character).

Deena is Diana Ross. Jennifer , beyonce and anika ugh i could listen to all three of their voices forever. A small part of me sometimes wonders if beyonce never became the amazing beyonce we know her as today if she would have done broadway like the other two because she mentioned earlier in her career how much she loved theatre but also i wouldn’t Want to give up the beyonce we know today lol because her albums and performances are great

She was able to get a cameo in this movie since its based on it. She originated the roles alongside Sheryl Lee Ralph (Deena) and Jennifer Holliday (Effie). The songs 'Listen', 'Love You I Do', and 'Changes' were added for the movie. And I believe the original play is free on YouTube. Btw I believe the "I'm Somebody" outfits/set were based on The Supremes' Love Child performance on the Ed Sullivan show.
