When I first saw little Snow, I thought she was actually related to Ginnifer Goodwin. Her facial expressions and everything are just like hers, it's crazy

"I think this episode is about me liking Regina."
Nope. Not even close. People who told you that were missing the point, and people who were insisting you would like her are probably part of why you are so resistant to her. Unfortunately, having people constantly telling us we're supposed to like something is often the quickest way to make us not want to. And when we want to (or don't want to) like something bad enough, it usually happens.
This is not meant to imply you are not capable of making your own decisions, Audrey, or to say that Regina is wonderful and you just don't want to. I only mean that when people tell us how we will feel about something, it can sometimes cause us to push back. It can have the opposite effect.
This episode had a lot of purposes, but making people like Regina isn't one of them. Villains who are evil for the sake of being evil are rarely as effective as villains with depth and layers. They don't hold a story up well for long, and they aren't as interesting. The Evil Queen wanting Snow White dead because she's prettier is fine for a short kid's tale that's meant to be almost like a parable, but for a show like this? That's not gonna cut the mustard. Villains who feel more fleshed out also allow the heroes who fight them to be more active and to grow. This episode is meant to create understanding, not likability. I think it's also meant to lay the groundwork for possible empathy, but later.
I also think it's meant to create more empathy for Snow, and to set up Regina's mother. There are later episodes which you already saw, that wouldn't work as well without the set up for Kora that's done here.
Loving these reactions. I'm so happy to see how into and excited by this show you are!

I hate how she knows the kind of person her mother is, and still blames the manipulated 10 year old??? Although I did like how they gave a more reasonable reason then just "she's prettier than me" at least in this version Snow actualy did hurt Regina by telling the secret, but in the end snow was just a child doing what she thought was best.

Okay, I am the weird one who absolutely loved Regina from the start. She's just so evil and I love it.
But this episode isn't going to make you like her right away, it's just showing you that she was a normal person before. Remember what she said before? Evil isn't born, it's made. She was definitely referencing to herself and there was a reasoning to WHY she is the way she is. At least a start to it. There's more, lots more. Most people take a liking to her a bit later.
The unknown reason to liking Rumple? I think it stems from his complexity of his character. He's interesting and mysterious. You truly never know which side he is on, what is it in it for him and why he does anything he does. He leaves more questions for answers and always keeps you guessing.

I’ve low key been thinking this every time you are like “I wonder why I like him” and I am like … “he is a sneaky, sneaky bad boy, 😏” 😅😂😂😂

Maybe the whole thing for Rumple is just a Bad Boy attraction hahah!

Regina as a character (as with this show in general, honestly) is a journey.
And I do agree with a lot of what you said at the end. And I still freaking love Regina. Maybe because I am bisexual as hell and I am a big fan of Lana’s acting and also think Regina is sexy as hell, maybe because I have watched the whole show, maybe both. I know I hated her at first LOL but then somehow she became one of my favorite television characters of all time. And while there are some moments I feel sympathy for Rumple, and even some moments where I sometimes find Mr. Gold to be a bit surprisingly attractive (though not the lizard counterpart) there is just some part of me that will also never be able to forgive him for a lot of shit, too. And I don’t relate to him or love him as much as I love Regina but I still believe that OVERALL he is an amazing character and one of the best ones in the show FOR SURE. I think he is really the only character with the same level of care and development and murky grey as Regina - but some of the Regina stuff is just VERY specific to my life in a way that the Rumple stuff isn’t. I think Emma is a great character, but for some reason (other than Emma) it is Regina and Rumple who steal the show and make the show and Emma is the only one who stands a chance at really being anywhere close to those two imo

I just keep thinking of “hurt people hurt people” and the amount of growth and work Regina had to go through. I really disliked her until season 2/3 ish, and this episode definitely planted seeds for the growth journey but didn’t make me suddenly like her. But I also relate a little too much to Regina, with a mother who was manipulative and emotionally abusive and controlling and absolutely would have used magic against me in that way if she had it. And it took me until I was 29 to leave, because I was so afraid. And because my mom has always said that she will always find me no matter how old I get or how far I go. And for Regina herself supposed to be being a teenager in these flashbacks herself (particularly one suffering so much abuse) I couldn’t help but pull for her as she unlearned things and grew as a person and I am probably getting close to being spoiler-y so I will stop lol

This episode isn't where I started liking Regina (though liking is a bit strong lol), but we get a chance to see a bit of humanity in her that creates a little groundwork for later seasons.

I always loved Regina for just being iconically evil in season 1 (she's probably the strongest actress on the show imo) haha -- but I didn't start sympathizing more with her character until probably early season 2, as you get to see more of her relationship with her son Henry and her developments and changes throughout the season -- of all the characters she has one of the most interesting and sympathetic archs

Yeah I agree with what a lot of people said. People often forget that Regina is also just a girl here too (cause it's being played by the same actress). She's only supposed to be like 18, totally manipulated by her mother, and being forced to marry an oldddd man she just met. I think Regina's blame is definitely misplaced but also realistic from the perspective of a young teenager who loves her mother despite how abusive she is. Like you can totally see on her face after her mom says she's proud of her, that all she really wants is her mother's approval too. That's what I've always loved about this show, all the characters operate in shades of grey. No one is all good or all evil. It's always more complicated than that

This sounds so crazy but don’t let your guard down because everything connects to some thing. Like the prosecutor who question Ms. Blanchard David a.k.a. charming’s dad from the enchanted forest. Me literally thinking you are gonna lose your sh*t when it’s finale time. I’m gonna wait till you finish the season so I can see the rest of the episodes back to back

Yeah, we have yet to get into any of Emma's backstory. Other than what she has told (which may or not be true, lol). There's so much to come yet. I appreciate that they take their time exploring each character's backstories. Even beyond just the first season.
That said, the rest of season 1 alone is such a ride and I'm here for it. I'm not sure if there's any character I've always liked from beginning to end. They all go through arcs and changes, not always for the better. Which I think also helps with your thoughts on Regina, since, there's never actually black & white good vs. Evil. Things get murky. Honestly hope that's not any sort of spoiler. 🤐 I'm trying to keep things vague while saying people should keep their minds open and not become to stuck in opinions on characters so early

Yea as a lot of people said, we didn't mean you gonna immediately switch and start liking Regina. It's just a "oh, ok i understand where she's coming from" kinda thing. I sadly forgot when i liked her but i'm pretty sure i was one of the few who loved her from the start. Idk, i love evil characters😂
What I gotta say tho is, OuaT really nails it in the casting department, especially the younger versions of characters. We gonna see a bit older version of Snow White in another season and she's just as good as this kid version. Same with Emma, sometime in another season (pretty sure it's around season 6) we see a kid version of her and she looks an acts just as adult Emma.

A lot of people forget that they love Regina AFTER watching the show, or they start liking her in the middle. That you have yet to see her character developement and redeem. This episode was for the viewers to understand Regina's hatred towards Snow, not for you to start liking her. And in my opinion, Regina was still quiet young when she married the king, and for a young teenage girl it is easier to blame a stranger than your own mother, who you love. Also don't feel bad, that you hate her, when everybody else love her, if I remember correctly I personally started liking Regina in the 3. season.

You're not supposed to like Regina after the episode. It's just to show the first steps that led to Regina becoming the Evil Queen.
I think it's misleading that Lana also played the young Regina, because I always assumed that Regina is supposed to be quite young too. Maybe 19 to Snow's 10? Since I always thought that Storybrook Regina is not more than 8 - 10 years Mary-Margret's senior. And when you take that into account, I think you also become a touch more forgiving of the character at the end of the episode. Only 19 years old, from an abusive home, having just found her first love, a person with whom she felt safe and loved, and then to lose that so tragically through what feels to her like an unforgivable betrayal. Especially since Regina probably can't relate to Snow desperately not wanting her to lose her mother too, since she doesn't have that bond with her manipulative mother and probably just rather wishes she didn't have one at all. I think you can at least understand the pivotal events.
We know Cora is the real monster, but through years of abuse, it's also natural for Regina's fury to find an easier victim than her mother. She trusted Snow, and now Daniel is dead. Easy connection to make.
And as is sometimes the way with anger, it can be overblown or misdirected and might even fizzle out if not for following events sealing Regina's fate. A bit like someone from difficult circumstances who ends up in the wrong circle and perhaps in prison. Not guilt-free, but not completely out of one's own fault either.
And once the spiral has been started...

As a huge OUAT/Regina FAANN, i loved your reaction to this!
imo, that episode was the episode i started to love her but i don't think they meant that episode as like a one time switch and suddenly she's amazing, like everyone said i think the point of the episode was to show how she wasn't always like that, she does have a heart.
i think that episode also shows the relationship she had with her mom, very dark, very complicated and filled with manipulation too which also imo explains her reaction at the end to blame snow and not her mother : it's easier to blame the little girl you just met and who "betrayed" you rather than blaming your own mother, she knew what cora was capable of doing, she didn't think snow would break her promise. (although yes, snow was just a 12yo kid but we do have to keep in mind that regina was also only 18yo at the time, she wasn't really an adult yet either.)
there's also much more into her backstory and history with both snow and her mother but anyways i think the point of this episode was to start showing people that evil isn't born, it's made, and start opening their minds and hearts to future storylines involving regina, she goes through a whole long and beautiful journey, that episode is just the start of it!

Okay, I know people will tell you you will grow to love Regina and I'm not going to pretend to know you enough to be able to predict how you'll react. But from watching your reaction so far, I don't think you'll ever be able to forgive her and that's fair,
I don't.
What you will get is a deeper understanding of her mindset and motivations, you'll see things that shape her behaviour, though none of it excuses what she's done.
Her character and story are complex and in my head she always blamed Snow because it was easier than the truth. The relationship between Cora (Regina's mother) and Regina is complicated. Regina both craves her mother's love and fears her for good reason, While Cora is....well, you'll get to see more of her and I don't think you're gonna like her either

I think you will like Regina in the end because of the change in her over the seasons I think season 3 is we’re you see the change. Bailey Madison plays young Snow she was I think 10 or 11 she behaves like Adult Snow because she observed Ginny. Bailey even wore green contacts to make her eyes match Ginny.

I think the point of this episode was to show that Regina wasn’t always like this not necessarily to give her some sympathy, as the show goes on and she starts being Regina Mills more than The Evil Queen she becomes a lot more dare I say lovable.

I don't think people necessarily mean to say you start liking Regina from this episode, more that she gets a little more sympathetic starting this episode. Also, I think Regina took it out on Snow because she had power over her, where she couldn't retaliate against her mom. The episode is just meant to explain where how her hatred of Snow White originated, but there's more flashbacks with the two of them.
Bailee Madison was in Bridge to Terabithia, Wizards of Waverly Place, and the Fosters.
I'm not sure if you noticed, but the DA is King George (Charming's dad).

I knew this episode wouldn't be the one to turn you into a Regina fan exactly for the reasons you mentioned - Snow was just a kid and her mother is to blame.
The importance of this episode wasn't about having you start liking her but having you understand that, underneath it all, Regina does have a heart. Knowing that will help you be more open to future story lines that will tug at your heart strings. Like, I have noticed in moments where Regina does show true emotion you often react with "She's lying." I believe this episode will make you come into moments like that and start questioning it more rather than assuming her just being pure evil.
Although, I am still of the firm belief that if they had portrayed Regina's age accurately instead of having Lana play young Regina, it would make the episode better. Regina is only 18 years old in this episode which, to me, puts things into perspective quite a lot. Something to always keep in mind with this show is that "Evil isn't born. It's made" and you have only seen a tiny fraction of Regina's backstory and a tiny fraction of why Regina turned out the way she did.
Having said that, season 2 Regina is gonna come for you and that's something I am willing to bet money on. I have said this before and I'll keep saying it - liking Regina isn't about forgiving and forgetting what she did because not only is that impossible but doing that would be a disservice to how amazing of a character she is and will become. Her journey is too good to erase and forget a crucial part of it.

oh and i don’t think we’re necessarily supposed to dislike rumple. we’re just never supposed to trust him. Also, believe it or not, even though she said she should’ve let Snow die on the horse, this isn’t where she actually became evil. That was just when she let hatred into her heart

Yeah, like most, don’t start liking Regina until sometime in season 2. And it’s a long time to get to trust/like her again!
I can’t wait until you learn who August/biker writer dude is, I think you’ll like it!
Lastly, little Snow is played by Bailee Madison, and I think she’s still acting. This isn’t her only time in the show, so keep an eye out for her in future episodes!

Thank you! I've seen so many people immediately be sympathetic for Regina after this episode, and I'm so glad to see that you aren't! Snow isn't even 12 in this episode, she's literally 10, not to mention that she just lost her mother which made her even more susceptible to manipulation. I don't blame Snow and I don't think it's fair that Regina did, but I think you also have to take into account the abuse she's experienced from her mother her whole life, combined with the grief of losing the love of her life, and how that could've caused her clouded judgment. I watched a video on YouTube where a psychologist reacted to this show, and he said the reason Regina's anger wasn't directed at her mother was because she was probably dealing with a form of Stockholm syndrome. She was used to her mother treating her this way, but Snow was someone she trusted, and in her eyes that trust was broken, so Snow was the easiest person to blame. It's not okay, and it's not fair, but I think it's a testament to the fact that Regina was dealing with mental issues long before she met Snow, and Daniel's death was just the catalyst that set off the bomb. Whether you like her or not, Regina's character has a lot of depth is actually very interesting, you'll learn more about it if you keep watching the show. Thank you for another great reaction!
