I know that I am behind in watching these with you. But I just have to say that you are totally correct. I moved from Chicago to D.C. about 5 years ago. Totally away from any friends or family and while the first 3 to 4 years were hard. I am now thriving and never want to move back.

Yea it's amazing how scary something can feel because weve been programmed at a young age to feel that way. Then once you break out of that it becomes less and less scary until you realise it was all in your mind in the first place

They briefly showed snow white's coffin in the first episode I think? That's what's at the bottom of the mine. I did not remember that but between the comments on here and google. And ofc Regina has it for some nefarious reason.
They did totally look like they were going to kiss and there's the whole shared son business. "Swan Queen" their "ship" name was HUGE when this was on air and probably still is. Idk. I'm in the minority that they're not my favorite pairing, but there's definitely a lot of moments between them and chemistry.
I forgot the little boy was Geppetto! I know it was all revolved around Pinocchio and obviously the little boy was not him. But yeah, that makes so much since. Since his parents were made into dolls he might later make dolls (including Pinocchio). I know you said you didn't remember a lot about Jiminy Cricket, but he was basically tasked to help Pinocchio always make the right choices. He always carried around an umbrella and was very dapper. Also, the blue fairy is from that to. (Which btw that was Descendants Belle--yes very heavily bronzed and I don't know why). It's also where the song "When You Wish Upon a Star" comes from. The melody at the beginning of like every Disney movie.
Also, it was really obscure movie (I think?), but the right time frame... 1987 cartoon Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night? It wasn't associated with Disney, but could be viewed as a follow up kind of (to the original story at least). That movie was creepy as fuck for kids. I remember being terrified by parts of it lol I know a lot of people my age have seen it, but idk it's.... an experience
I think part of the trouble with leaving his parents is his desire to be good. Every time he thought about leaving they would bring up all these ailments etc. and how much help they needed as they were getting older. That's especially hard to walk away from, even if it's in your best interest. These people may not care about him, but they're his parents and he doesn't want to turn into him. That can really get warped around in your head after decades of abuse. Is he making an important self-care choice for himself by walking away and finding his own path or is he abandoning his parents (no matter how shitty they were)? It's easy to make the choice from the outside, but when you're in that situation.... I think the cricket was just more of a metaphor for what he saw as being free. In the beginning when he was talking about how free the cricket was... that was the feeling he wanted. Once made it very literal to fit in with the storybook feel but yeah.
As far as facing choices in your own life, it definitely does get easier over time, but anything new is uncomfortable and we tend to edge away from that. And, while I think waiting around and relaying on other people to save you is not the best choice, sometimes we need a little nudge or support. When you talked about forging your own path and creating magic within yourself, it reminded me of this tedtalk that I love! I can't remember how I found it, but I rewatch it every now and again to just remind myself of how important it is. I think you'd really like it. It's deals with how to take stress and use it to your benefit to push forward. Not just on a mental level, but also biological and all the crazy ass stuff it does to and for you. It brings in a lot about how anxiety and fear play into it as well. But honestly me describing it will not do it justice. It's less than 15 minutes and so worth the time. https://www.ted.com/talks/kelly_mcgonigal_how_to_make_stress_your_friend/c

We finally βΉοΈπ get Dr. Archie Hopper aka Jiminy Cricketβs π¦π backstory,ππΌ as well as a peek into Geppettoβs π΄π» story. Itβs nice ππΌ to see Reginaβs hidden π«£ side. π She really loves β€οΈ Henry, heβs all she has; She named him after her father. Itβs so relatable and complicated. πͺ’ I like feel Jiminyβs loyalty π€ to his parents, while heβs so timid to step out on his own. Heβs so conflicted. Snowβs πΈπ» glass coffin β°οΈ was trapped at the bottom of the mine. π Pero,π who π€ brought all those drinks? π₯π»πΎπ₯

She confused sheriff with Prince Charming. I have a crush on prince charming! And yes, I've seen the entire show a couple of times. I suggested her this one! Glad most of u voted for it!

I like what you said about people being empowered and going out to do their own things, but I figured I'd leave this opinion here. I feel like the reason a lot of these stories focus on characters relying on magic, is because I feel like majority of people when placed in that situation would do the same. If you have a metaphorical crutch available to you, the more likely you are to use it. Because their realm has so much magic available, every is seeking it out to solve their problems.

I think Jiminy was too afraid to leave the only life he's ever known and also unsure really how to. He never learned really to have his own thoughts or be his own person outside of what his parents taught him. A bit Stockholm Syndrome, maybe. He also just seemed naturally anxious as a person. As he still is as Archie, lol. But he's growing and standing up to Regina was definitely bold. Choosing to be a cricket was odd, but I liked that they gave Jiminy some back story. Even if I was never the biggest fan of Pinocchio. That movie scared the heck out of me when I was little lol. Which I guess was the point of the original tale, scaring kids into being good. I like Archie though, I think he's sweet. You can tell he really struggled with being mean. It's just not in his nature. Even with Regina he was just being firm and honest.
Everyone continues to get backstories which interconnect in very interesting ways. Which I think is why people say you need to separate them from the Disney versions. As they will really start diverging more and more. If you get too hung up on the differences it might detract from the enjoyment? Or it might not. Lol though I guess this came out before even Disney was redoing their movies themselves and making some controversial choices. When this was airing some people were upset about some things as well. Especially characters looking way different from their Disney versions.

You said a couple episodes ago that your editor had become obsessed with Sheriff Graham, have they ever seen the show before?

I feel like Jiminy's story is really relatable. when your parents manipulate you your whole life and convince you that you can't do better than them it's hard to break away and makes you feel like it's impossible to leave.
