I agree. It was a horrible decision for the character. Her whole character arc just makes that transition seem like a reaction to trauma more than anything. It didn't fit with how they had presented the character before that at all

It's so bizarre what Glee did with Puck him saying he would most likely be dead or in jail than that boob comment....did the writers know something? I had a PE teacher who looked very similar to Beast half the kids at my high school thought she was a lesbian (not saying lesbians are all butch but we were dumb kids in 2010 at the time) but she was married to a man and had children. just gotta find the right guy Beast screw that dude

Hi I'm the person who Audrey had been talking to about it. I'm actually a trans person. I can see where you're coming from in some ways but the conversations around Beiste have actually been shifting as the trans community speaks more about their experiences and journeys because Beiste's journey is actually a very common one for trans people, especially in older generations. In fact, even though I was 14 when I started coming out as trans (15 when I was done) my story was very similar to Beiste's. The biggest issue the community has now is the decision they made to have Dot-Marie Jones keep playing the role though I understand that it's likely because it was for so few episodes
Either way when I had been speaking to Audrey I had actually said that I wasn't sure if you were actually being transphobic or if it was an unfortunate choice of words you made while I was very raw due to what was going on in the trans community at the time. I had seen your comment about it right after Trans Day of Remembrance, where 377 names had been read this year, 2 of which had to be added the day of since they had been murdered in Colorado Springs on the eve of TDOR. Being as raw as I was I decided to take a step back from the patreon for a while and Audrey was very kind when she found out and reached out to me and was willing to take on the emotional labour of talking to you for me.
Something you may want to keep in mind while you are an ally and want to advocate for the trans community though is that your words matter, they have meaning and even when they come from a well intentioned place that you have to be careful with them. When you say that it's insulting that they made Beiste trans you don't know who might be reading that comment, there could be a trans person with a similar or the same story seeing that and feeling that you think their story is insulting. And insulting or wrong is the nicest of the words I've seen about it, there's also been things like people saying its disgusting. You also never know if there could be someone who is actually transphobic who sees it and feels emboldened by your words.
Now that I'm in a better place mentally and emotionally I hope we can move forward and come to a place where we can help each other understand where the other is coming from

omg i totally agree with the whole making coach beiste ftm trans was wrong. It just doesn't make sense with the character having such a hard time trying to show off her femininity in the whole rest of her character prior to it. honestly it could've been better if she was mtf trans and that's also why she has a hard time with being seen as feminine

Audrey has just messaged me and told me that someone didn't like my comment about Coach Beiste on this post and accused me of being transphobic. But I explained my comments to Audrey and she understands them and told me to share them here.
I'm so sorry that someone took my comment about Coach Beiste in the wrong way, they should've messaged me themselves and I would've explained. I have nothing against transgender people at all, in fact I fight for them on a daily basis. And I love Unique, who's a fantastic trans character. But I just feel that making Coach Beiste trans in season 6 was completely the wrong decision. The whole thing that made the character so unique and special was that she was burly and masculine looking but on the inside she was a real girly girl. She said this on many occasions. And it was something I'd never seen on screen before. My cousin is a burly masculine woman and she's constantly being asked if she's a lesbian or trans and it really gets her down because she's a straight cis woman who just wanted to be seen as beautiful. And that's exactly what Coach Beiste was like, so the character meant a lot to her. When ever people would ask her if she's a lesbian or trans she'd just say "no, I'm like coach Beiste on Glee" and people would understand. That meant the world to her. And I heard many many other stories similar to my cousin's. And then Coach Beiste had her abuse storyline which showed that burly women could be abused by a smaller man, which also meant a lot to many people that I talked to. So when they made Coach Beiste trans it took all of that way, suddenly the character had gone from unique and special to a stereotype that was offensive to burly women. But also offensive to the trans community because it portrayed them in such a cliché way, it was trans people on the Glee social media pages who said this at the time. So yeah that's what I meant and I hope this makes sense. I really wouldn't want to offend anyone, but what happened to Coach Beiste was offensive to many people too.

Reading some of the comments on here about Beiste's season 6 storyline makes me really uncomfortable because that actually happens to a lot of people in real life. It's really not uncommon to hear stories like that from people in that community

Just as a heads up; 2 weeks from now, you’re gonna be slightly confused about who’s who for a little bit. I certainly was when I first saw the episode in question. And another one; the last song in the last episode of season 3 is gut wrenching, especially the scene with it. Your official Kleenex Warning is in full effect.

I'd love to see breakdowns to Not The Boy Next door and Cry. I know they cut another high note out of Not The Boy Next Door so the extended would be good. Also, his dancing and high kicks was an tribute to Hugh Jackman's performance of the song x

Yea I feel like the info was good, but they jammed it all into one episode. Doesn't give the viewer time to take it in emotionally

I think they based the extreme piano draping and kickiness of Kurt's performance of NTBND off of this version of Hugh's performance:

To this day, Rachel, choking on her audition, will always be the funniest thing to me😭😭 “PLEAK-“ LOL

I think they had Rachel completely choke for the sake of the plot and to show that since she has been singing this song her whole life, it was a shock that she messed it up. But this is a great episode! The DV storyline, I think, is done well and has such a powerful ending!

Cry is one of my top 3 Favorite Leah songs. I read somewhere that the note she hits when they zoom in on Pucks test score was a high F, to match the grade.? I'm not a singer so I'm not 100% sure, I was kind of hoping Audrey would catch it and say something. lol

Agree with Beiste on season 6!!! I actually liked the last season but her storyline annoyed me so much, they could've done something better.
And with Women abusing men, while I kinda agree, I think it would've been impossible in glee cause we don't have that many men (Mr. Shue, Burt etc.) and I don't think it would've fit in their storyline
Edit: sorry i thought you wrote, "one thing i wish this show included" not other shows, sorry😅

This episode makes me cringe, I feel so bad for Rachel during that audition. I know that feeling well, but you’re right, you just gotta keep going. The first play I ever did at 10 I completely forgot a line and tried to think of something else to say and then just made a strange noise and moved on. Embarrassing but it happens. This story line was based on Lea Michele forgetting the words briefly to Don’t Rain on my Parade during their live tour. After that, she stopped singing the song on tour. She’s a perfectionist with stage fright and an anxiety disorder, I completely understand where she came from and I wonder how she felt about them making this a story line. She’s been singing it everyday just fine for 2 months so she’s got it down now lol.
The abuse story line was very moving and uncomfortable at the same time, but I feel like, for Glee anyway, they handled it well. And the failure storyline, oh boy did that hit home for me. I failed nursing school back in 2010 and it about killed me. I ended up getting my bachelors later on in another field that I really enjoy, but this episode came out about a year after I failed and I just remember feeling so sad for him.
Cry is the standout performance for me in this episode, followed by Shake it out. I even enjoyed Not the Boy Next Door, but Cry just ugh…kills me.

Kurt does all those kicks during his performance because Hugh Jackman did when he played that role on Broadway. So, once again, it mimics what the "original" or most iconic performer did.

Definitely a tough episode to watch on many levels. It does feel like they're cramming so much in and probably because they realized that they had to figure out either how to close out characters' storylines because of graduation approaching for about half the glee club in 5 episodes...
Just speaking on an honest level as a therapist who has seen this many times, I'm glad that glee decided to show a more realistic progression of the Beiste storyline. Audrey's right, very rarely does someone leave on the first time acknowledging domestic violence. The cycle of abuse starts way before it gets physical (you can google it to learn more about it) and it becomes so much a part of their "normal" that it would be difficult to leave that very easily. It takes on average about 7 times of a person expressing their desire to leave before they actually do it and even then it's a process.
One of Naya's favorite charities is an organization called Alexandria House, which helps women and children transition from environments like those to safer and stable and permanent housing. Kevin, Jenna, and so many others on the glee cast have started a yearly event in her honor called Snixxmas (because Naya loved Christmas and always threw amazing parties called Snixxmas after her alter ego) which benefits Alexandria House and will be coming up soon. The first two were done remotely because of the pandemic and are on YouTube, this next one has only been described with one word so far...which is Upgraded, according to Kevin.
Cell Block Tango was amazingly executed even if it missed the point of the assignment. The full version does have Sugar's verse and it is great. Also, Naya, Amber, and Jenna recorded a cover of "Love the Way You Lie" originally for that scene, but because of licensing issues, they had to replace it last minute with "Shake It Out" Jenna says that "Love the Way You Lie" is phenomenal and I so wish that we could have heard it. I'm hoping that someday they can release it because the world deserves to hear it.

The only thing that I dislike about any episode that has Puck singing is that I love his voice but everything that happened with the actor after glee makes me angry.

Really well said! I noticed that "Cry" hits me harder than a lot of Rachel's emotional songs and you articulated exactly why that is.

Oh and also, if you want to react to Lea singing Don't Rain On My Parade live you should react to this one. She performed on Good Morning America last month with the Broadway cast and she's AMAZING! 😊 https://youtu.be/PJyQqrb1QAk

This episode really is a sad one, but that's for a reason. They wanted the end of the season to be really euphoric and having these hard moments a few episodes before the end and seeing how they're all resolved really adds to it. But it's worth the sadness literally just to see Lea singing Cry, her voice and her acting never fail to astound me, but the emotion and pain she put into that are on another level. 👌
Also I think they handle Coach Beiste's abuse storyline really well and really realistically. The story of a burly muscular woman being abused by a smaller man is something I'd never seen before and haven't seen since. And that's one reason that I really HATE what they do to Shannon in season 6, you'll see what I mean. I'll talk about it in more detail when we get there.
And just a little side note. One thing I wish that shows would include is women abusing men. I've never seen that on TV before but it's more common than many people realize. My uncle was abused by his wife for years and no one believed him. He was always told to buck up and stop being sensitive and laughed at for being hit by a girl. It was never taken seriously. But he kept pushing until people listened and helped him. But many men don't do that, they keep it to themselves because of the taunting and because they're scared about what others will think. They don't want to seem weak. And I worry just how many men out there are dealing with this. I think shows including that sort of domestic violence would help a lot of people. 💕

Two things happened in this episode that I never thought I would see on Glee; Rachel completely choking an audition and Puck singing a song from “My Fair Lady”. I cannot keep myself from cracking up to Rachel’s “pleek, pleek”. Every time I watch that scene I am just rolling. 😂😂
I really loved “Cell Block Tango”! The studio version includes a verse from Vanessa/Sugar and it’s awesome! They really nailed the song but didn’t quite understand the assignment. I’m glad they didn’t though because then we got their beautiful “Shake It Out” also. I don’t think I’ll every get over Naya starting off a capella. Just stunning.
“Cry” is on of my favorite Rachel songs because in most of her emotional ballads her tears seem almost forced and for show but with this one she’s just so raw and not trying to impress anyone. She’s really just letting her emotions take control.

"Shake it Out" is one of my, like, top 5 Glee songs they ever did. But I don't think they told the band guys the full context. They're back there just having a great time. I guess that's why the fans often simply refer to him as Smiley Guitar Guy.
Also, Sue was on fire in this episode. Having her up against Roz really kicks it up a notch, "as iron sharpens iron" I guess.

Just a note the recording of the show is pretty quite but you are loud so I’m not sure if it’s recording right. It was this way last episode as well. Now I’m going to get back to it. Still going to keep watching anyway because I love these reactions.
