I dont feel sorry for Santana, she is an evil bi***. I understand how insensitive and inappropriate it is to out somebody & being gay was (and still is by ignorant dumb a**es) looked down on and violently threatened and they should feel as safe as anyone else, but that does not entitle a person to special protections. Santana is a horrible person who tears everyone (except Brittney) down, so as wrong as it is to out someone, she does not deserve to be coddled while literally fat shaming him (even though he isnt fat) and that slap was assault!
Plus, him having a conversation with her (granted in public, but with a more respectably quiet volume than she was at while fat shaming him seconds before) does not mean he was to blame for someone else telling their uncle who then used the private life of a minor to attack an unrelated political opponent!

The thing I hate about this episode is that Finn, a white, straight man called a gay, Latina, female, a coward for not wanting to come out. Also they totally made Santana extra mean this episode to try and justify Finns outing. The good part is that she totally beat him in the mash off and slapped him.

the older we get, the less the age gap shows. The difference between the legal 18 -28 compared to 38-48 is huge!

Love watching your reactions to this show. I started watching you on YouTube and signed up for Patroen just to watch these with you. I absolutely hated the Puck/Shelby story line but mainly because of his age not the age gap. My current partner and I have been together for 10 years and we have a 20 year age gap (he’s older). We met when I was in my 30s so I never found it to be has creepy as I always found it to be when one of the partners is really young or immature.

I'm actually on a specific routine from my doctor to help with my weight gain. I come from a VERY obese family and I have struggled forever with it. I've slowly gained wieght over the past couple years so i went to a specialist who did a ton of tests.
Basically my goal is:
1) Eat only from noon until 8pm
2) Drink a TON of water
3) Exercise for 1 hour on an EMPTY stomach keeping my heartrate between 120-130. Not higher.
No high intensity workouts. No dieting. No crash course.
The doctor said I need to lower my cortisol levels and reboot my metabolism.
I had been crazy dieting and doing high intensity workouts but was still gaining weight. I even did a crazy 30 day clense and still gainged weight. My doctor said it was stressing my body and causing it to store fat regardless of what I ate.
I've already done with "diet plan" about 6 months ago and I couldn't believe that I lost weight. I have pictures to prove it. It just felt too easy. Walk, drink water, eat only during an 8 hour window. That's it.
I guess I could talk a little more about it in the next watch party if you want?

Posted this under the wrong episode so reposting. Still getting the hang of this patreon thing lol. "I also hate the whole Shelby/Puck thing and how they did Quinn's character during that time. They made Santana particularly savage this episode and Finn was frustrated because he just could not get in a battle of wits with her and possibly win. Santana, however, was frustrated with Finn as well. He's accusing her of manipulating Brittany when he co signed Rory manipulating her to try and sleep with her after her home was opened up to him. He was all aboard the bro express when it came to that even though "everybody knows" according to his words about Santana and Brittany. So if he knew why would he encourage Rory to try and trick Brittany into having sex with him? Everybody sucked during this time in Glee, but Santana getting outed reminded the viewers of how Finn was with Kurt as well, even though Kurt had done some things too. Best thing about Glee was that most of the characters had a chance at redemption. They grew up so to speak. As for the Unholy Trinity being a nasty mess people always overlook who their fearless leader was and how Sue sent them out there into the world to create chaos. They changed, and Sue changed as well. Everyone had a chance to be both the bad guy and the good guy."

Can we talk about the acting? Independently of the contents of the lines, the way Naya delivers every single word in this episode is simply outstanding. While I'm not going to enter the debate of who was more in the wrong here, I'll simply say I am empathetic to both sides. I have always loved a well-portrayed "villain", which is why I love Santana so much in the early seasons, yet I can still accept she was downright mean most of the time. This episode is fantastic acting-wise and Rumour Has it/Someone like you is hands down the best performance on the show (and there are like 700 to choose from, some of them equally brilliant, but this...it gets me every single time). And I'm so not looking forwards to the next episode, I mean, I am, I love the watch parties, they are helping me unwind from extremely busy weeks, but I just hate the I Kissed a Girl episode with all my heart and soul.

I have a question unrelated to the episode. You seem to actually get a bit of a workout when you are on your treadmill, even though you aren't walking very fast, and I know it's a manual one which I'm sure takes a bit more effort than a regular one. And I notice you walk with your hands on the handles. Do you actually feel like you are getting a workout this way? I only ask because I'm a bigger girl probably twice your size, and I'm so used to feeling like I'm dying when I walk on a treadmill (which makes me not want to do it), but I usually do about 2-3mph with my hands not on the handles.

I completely agree. Rachel, Finn, and Schue faced no real consequences for their actions and they tried to make us think they could do no wrong. They are stuck being the same one dimensional characters that they were from the beginning with very little progression while many of the others learned from their mistakes and evolved into much better and multi-faceted versions of their former selves. Heck, look at Karofsky!!! He and Finn were both just dumb homophobic jocks and he has progressed lightyears past Finn.

1. I don't think Ryan Murphy or the writers generally thought that much about what they had characters do, they seem concerned with having the characters do whatever fit the theme of the week or seemed outrageous.
2. Both Finn and Santana do things that are wrong here, and I think the nuance can make things really interesting. However, a Glee peeve is that the show often presents Finn, Rachel, and Schue (sometimes Kurt) as the ultimate heroes without always examining their wrongs.

I feel like with the whole Finn/Santana storyline it really comes down to which character you identify the most with. It's been years since I was in high school and in the closet and I can still remember the horrible fear that came with it, what happens to Santana is probably most closeted teenagers' worst nightmare haha.
There was so little queer representation at that time and Santana's storyline was important to so many people, I really really hated the way the writers handled her outing. The fact that they made it justifiable to out someone even after the whole Kurt/Karofsky storyline never really made sense to me.
Thanks a lot for the watch parties ! It's been years since I've watched glee and rewatching it with you is fun

People need to stop pretending like what Finn did was okay. It was outing. As a lesbian, this episode was what made me come out. I came out the night it aired because I was TERRIFIED that what happened to Santana would happen to me. If Finn hadn't loudly said that bit about "why don't you just come out of the closet?" then it wouldn't have been a thing. Yeah, Santana was an ass to him, but that never excuses speculating about someone else's sexuality loudly, in public, ESPECIALLY in a town like Lima that has shown to be filled with homophobic people time and time again. LGBTQ+ people all over the world lose so much just for loving who they love, and the fact that anyone wants to try and play the "it wasn't outing" card must not really care about the community. This kind of thing can be so detrimental.

People get so down on Santana and it confuses me, yes she was rude and snarky at times but she was also sweet and the only person truly there for a lot of characters when they needed some one (Kurt, Rachel, Mercedes) as the shows goes on she progresses into a beautiful character with a lot of layers she isn’t one dimensional and people aren’t just mean or nice there’s a lot of grey that’s her personality I think people expect her to be nice 24/7 because we always want to overprotect peoples feelings when that’s just not reality and on top of all that she isn’t even this mean throughout the show they definitely gave her back to back insulting lines to have Finn still appear to be the “golden boy” of the show and how he basically forces her to deal with the outing he caused (whether he meant to or not) then making him the savior on the next episode was just a big eye roll to me and I love Finn’s character as a whole but let’s all be real

i understand what you mean at the end with finn just hitting his breaking point and sure he could have done it in a way worse way but regardless there are just certain lines you don't cross, especially when finn has kurt as his brother now so he knows first hand how much of a struggle it is to come to terms with your sexuality and how others treat you because of it. in the context of the episode finns outburst seemed warranted because they gave santana a bunch of insulting monologues towards him but in a wider context of the whole show or even just this season so far it really doesn't make sense because santana has had way more scenes other than just insulting finn but then it backtracks for this one episode/storyline without explanation. i always see it as the writers just making santana extra mean for this one episode so that her being outed is justified and viewers won't lose this positive opinion they have of finn. i have more to say about that after the next episode but i really didn't like how they exaggerated santana's personality for just one episode and turned her back into a one dimensional character so that finn could really hurt her like that and people would think she deserved it in return for being mean. hardly anyone batted an eyelid at finn because of that (both characters in the show and audience members) just the same as when he said the f slur to kurt and those two scenes are very problematic and ruined my opinion of finn. anyways, rant over! i loved watching rumour has it/someone like you change your life before my very eyes (it happened to us all at one point) and i can't wait for next episode!

Can I just say that as a trans queer person I hate that this seems like people are debating whether or not it should count as outing and trying to justify outing? It feels really icky and like people feel if they don't like someone or someone is mean that they deserve to be outed when it's been proven in the past on the show that it's dangerous to be out. Hell we see what happens to Kurt and people cheer him on for saying Karofsky and everyone else deserve to be able to come out at their own speed (thouh it's funny how that goes out the window once Finn outs someone), we hear about Blaine getting beaten up for being gay and he has the same point of view and there's a reason for that.
A lot of trans and queer people in the states are still getting kicked out when they come out, we're still denied housing, work, we lose friends and family, get beaten up and in some cases we're still getting murdered. This shouldn't be some fun debate even if it's a show, it's a very real thing and this outing should have never happened and I hate that it was even written like this

I‘ve never actually seen it as Finn outing Santana. She herself has never been shy in school about her sexual relationship with Brittany. And I can totally understand that he asks her to sort her shit out and to stop hurting others. Yes, the hallway might not have been ideal for it, but that’s where she chose to attack him. It‘s not as if he stood in the cafeteria shouting it out. I can also see where he‘s coming from when he says the whole school already knows since she talked about her ‘sweet lady loving‘ in the hallways before. So the girl that took the information outside to her uncle, so HE could actually out her on TV, could have heard at any time.
“Rumor has it/Someone like you“ is gold and I actually like it much better than the songs on their own.

I always feel torn because I love Cory, but I didn't like Finn all that much in the early seasons. Did Santana go too far with the insults? Absolutely, and I can really understand why as she is constantly showing that her home life is a battlefield and she rarely had control over anything, so she takes control where she can...this is why she would have an eating disorder, why she would have cosmetic surgery (and let's just take a minute to imagine what kind of parents would allow that to happen because as a minor she would still need their permission to get that kind of procedure), and why she was so obsessed with power at school because it was where she could take control. I'm not trying to justify her behavior, just understand it. All her insults were based in things that other people have also made fun of Finn about just on a smaller scale than her. She definitely did take it too far though.
Now, I come to looking at Finn's behavior. Having been reamed by Burt about his treatment of Kurt in season 1 and then continuing to let Kurt down in the beginning of season 2, even after making a big show of standing up for him towards the end of season 1 and then living with Kurt and becoming brothers, and he still thought that it was ok to pull out that card is a bit beyond me. It was acknowledged as a secret that wasn't talked about by the glee club in the Rumors episode (19) of season 2 and Finn knew that although Santana and Brittany had a sexual relationship, Rachel explained to him that she was still firmly in the closet. And Brittany did "out" Santana on Fondue for Two, but it was unclear how much of the school actually watched the show and she still continued to date Karofsky to protect her secret. I get that he buckled under the stress of all the insults, but I have such a hard time accepting that he didn't know the gravity of what he was saying, especially because he would have felt the effects of his mom and Burt having to spend so much money to send Kurt to Dalton to escape the bullying from homophobia in that school.
All that being said, it was such a shame that they didn't submit this episode for consideration for Naya for awards season. She made us laugh (her breaking character with Brittany and the "stop the violence" stuff with the Troubletones), hate her (for taking it too far with the insults), cry (even after all these years, I can still feel all that pain), and root for her all in the span of one episode. Naya is such an amazing actress and for me, it's why her songs are always at the top of my list because I can always feel exactly what she's trying to convey with each performance.
On a lighter note, the dodgeball scene looked like a blast for them to film and I love watching Cory and Naya's thoughts on this episode behind the scenes and how Naya, Kevin and director Eric Stoltz were the only ones who knew that the slap was coming

There was a 17 year age difference between my parents (dad was older) but the difference is that my mom was in her 20s when they met and there was no one in a position of authority over the other. Shelby's his teacher, even if it's temporary and has a position of authority over Puck even when she's not as she is employed by the school/school district. Even if he was still younger but had a position of authority over her it would still be bad because there's a power imbalance

Finn felt like the whole school knew. Obviously they didn't if the 3rd candidate's niece didn't say anything until after what she over heard in the hallway. Not to mention unless she or people close to her gives confirmation all the rest of the school had was suspicion. Yes bullying can cause long term mental health issues but Finn has seen first hand through peoples treatment of Kurt the physical violence queer kids can face in that town. It's two very different things. I was heavily bullied throughout school and even with my worst bullies I would never out them before they were ready
Jay Johnston
2022-08-21 06:43:06 +0000 UTC
I disagree that everyone in school knew about it.
I do feel like it was an open secret within the Glee Club about Santana's sexuality. Like they knew Santana was a lesbian but didn't say anything about it outside of the Glee Club members and you see that if you notice the small moments that happened with other members of the Glee Club (a few examples: a comment Quinn made to Santana in the New York hotel, Mercedes' dream sequence performance of "It's All Over" references Santana and Brittany hooking up, and Artie knows about Brittany and Santana because he asked Brittany about what was going on with them). The Glee Club clearly don't have a a problem with it as they already have LGBT members in the club.
But I never understood why it was written that Finn said "the whole school already knows and they don't care" to Santana. Clearly the whole school doesn't know because you see students turn around when he outs her in the middle of the hallway and they looked shocked/confused even in the next episode there are moments right before the "I Kissed A Girl" performance where there are multiple people staring at Santana (pretty much assumed they didn't know especially when see that 1 guy conforts her about it) while she is walking down the hallway and in a deleted scene where Santana comes out the Cheerios it seemed clear they didn't know but were accepting of it.
Also I never understood why they had Finn say everyone knew and didn't care. As a viewer we saw what happen with Kurt he was bullied by Karofsky and Azimio for being gay (we know Karofsky was struggling with his issues with his sexuality). Karofsky bullied Kurt so bad he transferred to Dalton Academy and then when Kurt returned to McKinley High School we saw that Kurt was voted Prom Queen as what was clearly a homophobic joke. Clearly there were hints to some homophobia within the school regardless if it was heavily a focus.
Like I said in an earlier comment I hate that the writers made Santana meaner than she has ever been in an episode as a way that was clearly meant to "justify" Finn outing Santana. Yes Santana has said some snarky remarks before but clear they were laying it on thick for the comments that Santana has said since the beginning of this season and in more particular the comments she said this episode which was clearly a lead up to "justify" Finn outing her.

No it can’t. It’s not like she felt anything either. She literally slept with him because Brittany gave her the idea of taking his virginity. Secondly, I hope you know that attacking someone’s body is pretty serious. It can lead to body dysmorphia, eating disorders, etc. So it’s not like her comments were harmless. And as I’m sure you’re aware, some kids do commit suicide as a result of the kind of bullying Santana exhibits.
Mia
2022-08-21 04:21:48 +0000 UTC
Everyone says Finn outed her but he even said the whole school already knew just that no one said anything to her face about it. The one who really outed her was the guy who made that campaign ad. What adult in their right mind would out a teenager like that on an ad that everyone in Ohio is going to see.
As for the Shelby Quinn Puck storyline that’s always been my least favorite storyline of the entire series. She said to Schue that Lima was where she made mistakes that she wanted to fix in the beginning of the season and then she just made them worse with this storyline.

I didn't like how they ramped up Santana's insults in a way that she's never done before to "justify" Finn outing her. Yes, she's always had snarky comments here and there but never like this. Making clearly inaccurate jokes about his body (even though it may touch upon his insecurities) is extremely different than outing someone. Aside from the personal acceptance involved, outing can be dangerous. LGBTQ+ teens have a higher rate of suicide, people can lose their friends, family, jobs, and have their lives threatened.
I'm not a huge Finn fan. He can be lovable but some of the stuff he says is downright hurtful. Back in Season 1, right after they had sex, Santana asked him how he felt and he said he "didn't feel anything because it didn't mean anything." That statement alone could explain how she might feel defensive towards him.

Season 3 is a bizarre season and the previous two seasons are practically erased because everyone ends up ooc for one reason or another.
As for the Santana/Finn scene, I would never want someone to out me either and I’m glad the people who suspected in high school never said anything because I didn’t even know, but at the same time, I understand why Finn snapped. He wanted to get back at her for constantly humiliating him. It’s not just in this episode, but in many episodes where she picks him as a target. And bullying is just not okay. It’s why I could never like Santana. You can be confused and in the closet and not be mean.
Mia
2022-08-20 23:12:28 +0000 UTC
It’s interesting since no one ever seems to talk about Santana’s constant bullying, justifying it by saying that she was struggling to come to terms with herself. Two wrongs don’t make a right, but she was wrong too. On top of that, while it isn’t right what he said to Kurt, Kurt was essentially harassing him. I feel like people forget that context does matter. And I don’t even like Finn

I'm a firm believer in "age is just a number" when it comes to adult relationships. The real disappointment in the Puck/Shelby story is that he's just not mature enough for the relationship, even if he's being super sincere. I'm just not creeped out by their relationship outside of "ooh, you're his teacher, stop that," plus the way he keeps pressing the issue. Season 3 does this weird thing of having really intense plots that make you question how you feel about characters, just for the writers to try to make them seem more appealing or approachable later on without really addressing how awful they were. Meanwhile, Tina just sits in the background of the entire season without much going on at all.

Everything you said about Santana I totally agree with!! Most people act like she's an absolute queen, and I don't hate her, but she was a bully. That's literally what she was. And she had this outing coming, if Finn hadn't of done it someone else would have. 👌

Love this episode so much!!! Every one of the songs is fantastic!
Still hate the Shelby/Puck story line. I don't even care age, she is a teacher, he is a student. No excuse. And the Quinn story line in there... I don't mind as much, simply because it is so understandable for a teen girl to give birth and be so messed up about it. It's cold, and it makes me dislike her for her choices, but you can see where she is coming from. I love Shelby's quote... You can dye your hair blonde again, but that doesn't make you any less lost. Quinn is lost.
Santana and Finn. I am so glad you had that opinion, as I kind of thought I was the only one!! Outing someone is never okay. I will be the first to say that. However, there is only so much a person can take before they snap. You can't poke and poke and poke and not expect someone to retaliate where it is going to hurt most. Especially as a teenager when you may not have learned that some things are out of bounds, or even more so, you don't think about bounds... you lead by emotion... Even then though... what she was doing was not okay. No one deserves to be outed, but she deserved a taste of her own medicine. Maybe not to that extent, but I'm shocked someone hasn't done it sooner with how abusive she is to everyone. Heck, she even made a whole song about how big Sam's lips were. It's amazing someone hasn't knocked her on her butt yet. No one was in the right here.

But I still don't like this season as much as most of the others, controversial I know but the storylines are either really creepy, really weird, really wrong or just despressing. The Santana being outed thing I have such mixed feelings on because it was wrong of Finn to say that but she was AWFUL to him and she kind of had it coming. The Shelby and Puck thing is gross on 50 different levels. And I hated the stereotypes about Irish people that they kept putting onto Rory. I'm British and my mum is Irish. The leprechaun stuff was bad enough but now they're just portraying Rory as an idiot, Irish people know what trash talk is and know what dodgeball is. 🤦 But at least the songs were good and I liked seeing Rachel come to her senses about Kurt and the election.

YES!! I couldn't wait for you to react to this episode!
This is truly one of my favorites and like Morgan said in their comment above there's a lot of great episodes following this one.
Season 3 is hands down my favorite season and has some of my favorite musical performances! :)

Absolutely love the "Rumour Has It/Someone Like You" cover in this episode. It is easily my favorite cover from Glee (I still listen to it on a weekly basis).
Even though the performance is meant to be a group performance always thought it was a performance where Naya Rivera truly shined. Naya's vocals paired with her acting in the scene right before the performance, during the performance itself, and in the scene right after the performance made such a great sequence of scenes where she portrayed how Santana was vulnerable, scared, and angry because she was going to be outed on a wide scale when she was already struggling to come to terms with her sexuality.
I have a love/hate relationship with this episode I like/love most the covers in this episode but hate how the writers had a whole storyline arc showing us how Santana was struggling to come to terms with her sexuality only to make her over-the-top rude (honestly meaner then she has ever been in a episode) in this episode as a way to try to justify Finn outing her. To me the highlights of this episode and the next episode are Naya Rivera's acting (both when it came to comedic timing in certain scenes and the drama/serious scenes) and singing performances.
The start of Season 3 started slow to me but from this episode onward there are some great episodes and great music performances.
