I'm just watching this today because I'm kinda late to everything lol (thank God we can watch these watch parties whenever) and my feelings about it are just like yours, Audrey. I love it but at the same time I find it a little meh... I don't know. Also there's this thing that usually happens to me, like a loooot of times, where I don't really care about the leads, but the secondary characters have me hooked, and it's happened this time yet again. I mean, Maria is fantastic but I'm not too fond of that type of characters, Tony isn't bad but I'm not convinced....and then we have Anita. Holy crap, she is outstanding. I'm blown away by her perfomance. I also really liked Bernardo. Granted, I'm not the biggest West Side Story fan. But this was overall really cool and amazing to watch. Good job to all of them.

I got that Ansel wasn't a dancer, but I believe that his singing wasn't that bad. He surprised me when I saw it in the theater that he was so good. He seemed like when he was cast the person that they got just to try and draw people in to see it. Of course before he got cancelled so that removed the pull there, plus Covid-19 ruined those plans as well. In general though I felt his high notes and higher register to be very good. He just struggled more on the lower range.

This is a weird idea, but honestly I’d like it if you did a reaction video to Cool or Maria and give your analysis on Ansel’s vocals. I just think it’d be interesting/informative for you to break down your problem with it because I honestly don’t see what’s wrong with it. I’m not a vocal teacher of course, but just as a casual listener I think he sounds great. Not as showy as Rachel or Ariana, but his softness is nice. But you’re definitely not the only one to critique it, so I’d just be interested in hearing your perspective as a vocal coach. Just a thought lol.

I’m so glad you had WWS as a watch party! I’ve been looking forward to watching it again. Note for possibly another reaction: Rachel Zegler often posts song’s from different musicals on YouTube. I believe WSS was their first movie (Ariana was also in The Prom but that was filmed after WSS). I love your pup!!! 💜

So excited to see you watch this! So as far as Ansel goes I understand the critique of his singing--I personally LOVE his singing Maria and One Hand One Heart is beautiful, but purely from a technical standpoint I can't get mad that you point out that he doesn't zing as much with his vocals(though when I am just listening with nobody else's input I hear nothing lacking). Still thought he did good though. But everyone else here has a musical theatre background that is much stronger than his. HOWEVER, and I'm sure someone will get mad because we're all supposed to hate everything he has ever done onscreen now I guess, but I thought his ACTING was his strongest point and great in this movie. He's the only Tony I've yet to see that I actually believed had a troubled background. The only one I believe as a greaser and someone who is trying to subdue himself. Be calmer. Be better person. The other Tonys I've seen, especially the og movie, seemed like good boy next door types that were pretending they were gangsters with their friends. Therefore, I can accept that he may be subdued or too cool for big theatrics. As much singing is important in musicals I can forgive weaker singing over weaker acting. That being said...YES Ariana Debose as Anita is my favorite too. Just a phenomenal actress. And singer. And dancer. Her and Rachel both deserve long and continuously groundbreaking careers! And Mike Faist as Riff is a standout too. And Bernardo was great. And I cannot say how happy I am Rita Moreno was in this movie--and that she's the one that saved Anita from the Jets! So full circle since she was the first movie Anita. I'm rambling but this was one of the best movie casts I've seen in awhile. And I can't wait to follow every project Rachel Zegler does from here on. P.S. I love your tortilla chair!

Ansel Elgort was adequate as Tony. Simply that...adequate. But, in my opinion, Tony is the weak link in the show...always has been. No matter how many productions I've seen, EVERYONE outshines Tony. But throw in Ariana and Rachel...and Rita and Mike (Riff)...and Ansel didn't stand a chance.

Not only did Ariana Debose burn holes in her shoes during the American number but she danced it with a badly sprained /almost broken ankle. Brava. Her whole performance in the movie . She deserved that Oscar.
