Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora - HDR Optimized Settings

The game is NOT using/applying Xbox/Playstation/PC HDR Calibration app settings.
The game has a good HDR implementation by offering precise in-game Peak HDR Luminance control up to 5.000 nits along with a general Brightness/Gamma and UI Luminance sliders.
Initially the game suffered from black level raise but it got fixed with later patches and my suggestions needed to be changed after Title Update 3.2 (Game Version 1.04).
If you have an LG OLED and:
> you're using Dynamic Tone Mapping or Dynamic Contrast:
Leave Brightness slider to: 20;
Set HDR Peak Brightness slider to: 4.000 (nits)
Set HDR Peak Brightness UI slider to: 100 (nits).
> you're using HGIG:
Leave Brightness slider to: 20;
Set HDR Peak Brightness slider to: 800 (nits) or 1.000 (for G2) or 1.500 (for G3);
Set HDR Peak Brightness UI slider to: 100 (nits).
If you don't have an LG OLED and:
> you don't have an HGIG option:
Leave Brightness slider to: 20;
Set HDR Peak Brightness slider to: 1.000 (nits);
Set HDR Peak Brightness UI slider to: 100 (nits).
> you're using HGIG:
Leave Brightness slider to: 20;
Set HDR Peak Brightness slider to the corresponding real Peak HDR Luminance of your TV in "nits";
Set HDR Peak Brightness UI slider to: 100 (nits).
BONUS:
If you have a 120hz display, use the new 40fps Graphics mode on Xbox Series X and PS5: in order to have the best visuals and performance balance;
If you have a 60hz display, use the "Prioritize Performance" 60fps graphics mode instead;
Enable VRR on Console/PC level to smooth out small dips in the framerate.

You don't have to "rename" the HDMI but changing its icon to "PC" (with the laptop icon) + enabling 4:4:4 Pass Through. Also remember that you need to re-enter all your settings when you change the icon, that's why it's darker initially (as it is using defaults)

2025-08-06 12:04:49 +0000 UTCHi Paolo :) I want ask you something please. I play DLC sky breaker now and i try this game with 4:4:4 passthrough on but i find out that when i rename hdmi to PC mode picture is darker and little laggy so i just rename it back for console name and just let 4:4:4on. My picture pop up, is more sharp and brighter. Should i let it on ? When i have this option on with hgig its not so dark like with off. Or is it bad? Thank you

2025-08-06 11:44:04 +0000 UTCCause otherwise it's really bright and could cause image retention on OLEDs

2025-05-21 13:17:44 +0000 UTCI have size42 lg oled 45... 20 brightness, 800 nits and 100 ul nits... pssr or amd upscaling? What should i switch on my ps 5 pro in avatar game settings please? And hdr on or automatic hdr? Thank you paolo.

2025-05-21 13:10:36 +0000 UTCHDR Brightness UI only affects UI/HUDs and not the in-game average brightness. 400 is too high for HUDs, especially on OLEDs. I wouldn't exceed 200-300 for it

2025-01-22 07:31:04 +0000 UTCI don’t know if there was another patch that changed something new, but your current settings for HGIG on my LG C1 cause the image to become extremely dim. It seems to be tied to the “HDR Peak Brightness UI” setting. The default of 400 seems correct now.

2025-01-22 06:34:41 +0000 UTCDefault is now 20 after version 1.04 which I confirm is perfect/fixed. No need to adjust it anymore.

2024-04-21 21:17:33 +0000 UTCGood to hear! I have my C1 and Xbox Series X configured exactly like Paolo taught us to, but putting the brightness to 0, I couldn't see a damn thing! The default 15 is perfect tho. I wasn't aware there was a problem with HDR (although, coming from Ubisoft, HDR problems are to always be expected).

2024-04-21 19:15:57 +0000 UTCHey dude. I think they patched it. Default of 15 brightness is perfect now.

2023-12-16 18:54:37 +0000 UTCI found using 1440p definitely stabilized the FR a bit, but could all be placebo🤔

2023-12-14 22:42:02 +0000 UTCI would never force HDR "Always on" on PS5 as, contrary to AutoHDR on Xbox and PC (which is powered by AI/ML HDR reconstruction), it's just an HDR container for SDR which will noticeably ruin it. Stick with HDR "On when supported" there in order to leave SDR alone and just trigger HDR only for native HDR ;)

2023-12-14 21:37:54 +0000 UTCYeah I know it's got no HDR. That's why I'm confused about What to use. Can't wait for the April update, us console peasants have been looking forward to it since they announced. I guess I'm just curious about whether to force the PS5s settings through the HDR "always on" or to leave it on while supported. Keep up the good work! We all thank you immensely

2023-12-14 21:35:43 +0000 UTCDefault Black Levels of the game are just raised as a (questionable) creative choice and setting Brightness to 0 will almost set them back to correct levels. "Almost" because a bit of raise will remain but, to me, it's not worth changing FTDA setting just for one game and then setting it back to -4 (which I universally recommend to combat the inherent gamma raise of VRR in all games). I would keep it as is with the small raise left so to still preserve a bit of what creators wanted in this case.

2023-12-14 07:58:35 +0000 UTCFor reference: LG C1 55" on PC here. It was a bit of a relief to see you recommending 0 on the Brightness slider, as it confirms my suspicion that Brightness was the culprit behind the image being slightly off on both HGIG and DTM. It seems then, given the context of your post, that this oddness was indeed black level raise? I wasn't even sure exactly what it was, just that the image looked ever-so-slightly flat in bright areas and less-contrasty than expected in darker areas. So I tried 0 Brightness because I've had to use Brightness to mitigate similar shenanigans in other games in the past, and it seemed to alleviate the issue, so I just stuck with it. Now I feel justified! I have two quick questions for you though, if you wouldn't mind indulging me. 😁 Some sources (in this instance, GamingTech on YouTube) recommend using the FTDA setting in Game Optimizer to combat the black level raise. Specifically, the recommendation seems is FTDA -13 for DTM, or FTDA -6 for HGIG. Would you mind giving your input on this solution? Lastly, if one DID use the FTDA solution, would doing so impact the use of the Brightness slider solution? Thanks for everything you do!

2023-12-14 03:32:55 +0000 UTCThank you :) From what I'm seeing Hunt Showdown is still not native HDR, but just SDR + AutoHDR which can be forced on Windows 11 with some tweaking. It should get native HDR10 support in 2024 after a CryEngine upgrade.

2023-12-13 08:22:25 +0000 UTCAre you playing on PC? That's probably FSR2/3 shimmering when the internal res is too low, maybe try using the "Balanced" preset (or 58% of native res) at least. If you're playing on consoles you're stuck with what the devs set...

2023-12-13 07:41:23 +0000 UTCAlso, forgot to ask, does 1440p improve framerate/anti aliasing? Avatar is doing some weird dithering in their game, looks like ass tbh. I'm gonna try it but I'm interested in your thoughts..

2023-12-13 02:24:55 +0000 UTCBro....that zero slider.....I would have never even considered lowering it. You're worth every penny. Still waiting on Hunt Showdow though 🙄🫡🫶🙏
