It came from the low-budget midnight horror films from the 70's and 80's that would be shown in grungy theaters were the old projectors would "grind" through the reels of film they were displaying. I believe there is also a a studio called "Grindhouse Films" now that re-releases stuff like the Old Sonny Chiba films
