Back in 2015, I was living in Idaho, struggling to survive on income from my art. I had to take constant commissions to make ends meet, and it left me with very little time to work on comics. I would take a week or two off to marathon work on my comics, which resulted in significant strain on my health. Over time, more and more people started to just pirate my comics as soon as I put them up for sale, which made it look dire from a comics creation standpoint. I felt pretty hopeless.
Then I saw this new thing called Patreon and decided to give it a shot, using a new Puzzle and Diamond comic called ‘Moving Day’ as the main draw (heh). Well, technically I started my Patreon in December 2014, but close enough! I consider 2015 the true start of it anyway.
Ten years later, I'm living a much better life, in Seattle with my partner Kaylii, and I've produced an insane amount of comic content - thanks to you! Your support kept me fed, housed, clothed, caffeinated and sane, and it allowed me to be able to focus on my creative output and make a stable living off of my art. That collage of titles above isn't even everything, as I left off commissioned works collaborative projects and collected editions. Look at all those titles!
Not only that, but I've also grown close with many of you and we've formed a mini community both on here and in my Discord server. It's always a delight to see how you respond to my new pages, and the funny and insightful conversations that result from it. The fact that you care so much about my characters means the world to me, and I attribute much of their development and growth over the years to your feedback and seeing what gets you interested and amused. I feel like my reason to be in this world is to tell stories for you and delight you, especially when you’ve had a bad day or are concerned about the state of the world.
I truly could not be happier, and it's thanks to your support. I hope to continue making comics and characters for you to enjoy and discuss for many years to come. I've only gotten more productive over time, and I have so many stories in my head I've yet to tell. I hope you will stick with me as I work on them. Again, thank you so much. You've truly changed my life in a huge way, and I like to think that in some way I've likewise changed yours as well.
Here's to the next ten years!
Cheers,
Kad
