Question for my patriesss

Hi Patreon!! Prepping a You Can Sit with Us episode - what's the best piece of advice you've ever received?

Comments

The best piece of writing advice I received was about writing poetry, but I think it applies to all creative forms: "Specificity is the best general." The more specific the details, the more grounded a piece feels, and the more a reader will be able to emotionally connect with the work. It's the difference between "I love my grandmother," and "My earliest memories are with her as we'd walk, hand in hand, collecting flowers and pinecones and interesting rocks into a basket, and even though she's gone now, I look back on this memory and feel warm." Another really good piece of advice I got was: "Only write love poems when you are not in love."

The absolute best advice I have ever been given was from my mother years ago. I was spiraling, worrying over something that felt monumental at the time and definitely out of my control and she told me, “whenever you can help it, don’t borrow trouble. It will always find you.” And now whenever I’m starting to let worries take over I think of that moment and her advice and remind myself that enough trouble will find me on it’s own and I don’t need to worry over the things I cannot change.
