The Expanse 3x13 Full Length Reaction

Comments

The TV show lasted to a 2nd season, so I decided to watch it at that time. The 1st and 2nd season convinced me to read the books to see what I was missing. I think there are probably summaries and recaps you should look for to help give you more context into the parts that are touched upon in that last show but were not well explained. You've done very well with what you have seen/heard and I am super happy that you caught so much.

Great reaction. Yeah, the scope of the story just expanded again. 1300 new solar system to go to. :D Things like this really showcase that originally the writers envisioned the story as a tabletop role-play game, which evolved into an MMORPG, but when neither did move forward they adapted it into a series of novels. What I really appreciate about the second half of this season is how the story shifts once the threat from Melba is out of the picture. With her gone, there is no true antagonist left. Instead, the conflicts rise from all parties pursuing what they each believe to be the best path forward. The station itself is not evil, has no malicious intent, and was simply executing its preprogrammed defense mechanism reacting to the events. Ashford is the closest thing to an antagonist, but even his actions come from the sincere desire to save humanity. He is willing to sacrifice the entire fleet just to even try to achieve that, but his motivation is never selfish. His arc may be the best in this "season". Introduced as Dawes' man, you expect him to become an antagonist from the beginning, trying to undermine Drummer and take over command. But as the story progresses you slowly realize he has wisdom and based on his actions and confrontations with others, just wants the Belt to succeed. We even get to see him and Drummer bury the hatchet and set aside their rivalry after their injuries, making the final episode all the more poignant when they ultimately end up on opposing sides. The final episode weaves so many themes together. Holden's monologue on humanity's instinct to respond with violence when confronted by the unknown is truly striking and I remember it hit me hard even several years ago when it wasn't so relevant. Paired with Anna's conversation with Amos, both serve as a powerful reminder of how easily miscommunication and mistrust can spiral into uncontrollable destruction. These moments elevate the story into a memorable social commentary that stays with you long after the credits.
