firefly season 1, ep 9

I think this is the episode where Jayne actually realizes that Mal can be just as ruthless as he can. Except that Mal does it in defense of his crew/family, a concept that Jayne has always had trouble grasping. He finally starts to understand here. And Mal is my hero for being willing to toss him into space. You know that was hurting him, since he considers Jayne under his protection also. But, he was willing to make the hard choice and live with the decision.

And they gave Jayne most of the best lines in the show.

At this point, if you haven’t watched the film yet, don’t rush. My advice, to my younger self, who watched in 2010, and my advice to you, is to hang out with this family of misfits, in this time and place, as long as you can. The film will be still be there.

Couple of moments in this I want to call out; first, at around 35:35, Mal and Zoë do a communications check, which Mal initiates. If you harken back to the first episode when Mal, Jayne, and Zoë are meeting up with Patience, Mal mocks Jayne a bit for doing a comms check when they’re standing next to each other. Mal has no problem doing it here, tho :) The other one is around 8:00, when Mal and Jayne are playing horseshoes. Jayne says “My pop always said, ‘Anyone who can't find work ain't looking hard enough.’ We ain't even looking at all.” Jayne’s a brute and not always the brightest. He’s also somewhat selective in his loyalties; he says he’s loyal to Mal (“I didn’t rat /you/ out to the feds”) but not the whole crew. But in the line above, shows he has a strong work ethic. We also see it in how hard he works at remembering his lines. He’s not a nice guy, and one may not like what he does, how he does it, or how much he seems to enjoy some of the seedier/more violent parts of his job. But he’s not /lazy/.

The Mal - Jayne 'betrayal' confrontation at the exit hatch has always been one of my favorite scenes. And yes... 'daddy' Mal was really really pissed... I think to the point where he was actually going to let Jayne die... until Jayne asks Mal "to make something up" - when Jayne indicates he feels the shame of his actions. Mal is walking up those stairs quite determined and only stops to close the exterior hatch when he hears Jayne's true contrition . Shinny react to top 5 episode.

Another brilliant episode to add to the pile. A fun little detail is you can actually see Jayne call the feds right before he gets the uniforms. I think Jayne would have turned over Simon and River to the feds earlier if it was only about the money. He probably was concerned about River being a danger to himself and the others he cares about after she cut him. He was still morally in the wrong for calling the feds imo, but I do understand why he did it. Also, I know the show justified stealing from a hospital because it would be restocked immediately, but clearly it takes some time for a restock (otherwise there wouldn't have been any time to steal it without being caught) and now the crew is responsible for anyone that needs the medicine before it gets restocked.

“Ohhh dad’s pissed!” .. ahah dang right he is! One of my fav scenes of the series. Mal knew exactly what happened. It’s like, oh you fucked up baaaad.
