I love this episode for the laughs. But also, you get a look into Mal's relationships with both Kaylee and Inara. Unlike Zoe, who he pretty much treats as an equal, he sees the others as needing him to defend them. Kaylee is like a little sister, but his feelings for Inara are way more complicated.

I once saw a video (con panel?) in which Jewel Staite (Kaylee) said that when she got the part, she was told she’d have to put on about 20lbs because “they wanted Kaylee to look like she enjoyed a cheeseburger”. Putting aside the fact that (per Jewel) asking a woman to put on weight for an acting role basically never happens, that moment where she makes a beeline for the table is, along with the strawberries in the pilot, very much in character.

Jayne is low key a really important character for the tone of the show. The fact that Mal keeps a guy like him around informs us how dangerous the world they work in is. Without him I think the show would lose its edge and feel a bit too cheesy and safe
