I feel like Jayne gets scared because he is basically a bully and when confronted by something that he can't bully... his true fears come out. Malcolm and Zoe were soldiers, so they are more adept at pushing the fear down and dealing with it later. Wash (the pilot) mostly fears when Zoe is in danger. The others all land in various places of fear, depending on their amount of control and trust in Mal.
