The basement scene gets better every time I see it and that moment where Spike lunges at Buffy and says "Window dressing"... and she doesn't even flinch. Beautiful. You're right, Buffy does appear more grown up this season. I'd say that is no accident. There is the school of thought that the entire series is a metaphor for growing up and reaching adulthood, that every demon and supernatural challenge Buffy encounters is a metaphor for the challenges we all face on our way to adulthood. Seeing as this is the final season, it makes sense that Buffy would be reaching the end of that journey.
