I just can’t help but think that if Cordelia had been there, she would have known something was up, and that maybe if she and Wes had talked, things might have turned out differently.

He took the gamble to handle it himself, but without proper regard to the stakes that were not his with which to bet. His actions directly led to Connor being taken and for that he must accept his culpability, even is it means he has to deal with it alone.
