Angel 1x18 "Five by Five" Reaction

Comments

I always feel strange commenting a full month later but I gotta provide just a few paragraphs about Faith haha I'll preface this with: I think all your observations are spot on, and I understand why you'd be confused by Faith stans. I think you're feeling exactly what the writers want you to feel right now, so anyone trying to correct your feelings needs to calm down. I rationalize Faith seemingly getting a little better in Who Are You? and then immediately reverting back to her evil behavior like this: her self-hatred only allowed her to behave altruistically and to see herself as a "murderous bitch" while she was embodying Buffy, because she sees Buffy as a good person and herself as inherently evil or at the very least too damaged to be helped. Once she was back in her body, she was back to being stuck in what she considers to be a lost cause, so she did what she's been doing this whole time and leaned into being evil. I think a lot of her envy in s3 is not just for what Buffy has, but for what Buffy is. Buffy is well-adjusted, stable, has boundless love for the people around her (including for Faith), and she knows who she is. Faith isn't any of those things, and she knows it. So she hates Buffy for it and tries and fails to drag Buffy down with her, because doing the reverse and trying to get up to Buffy's level means confronting her self esteem issues, which you generally need a support system and ideally psychological help to do. It's also a common thing for people with extreme abandonment issues to actually sabotage their relationships with others so that they can't be abandoned by them, which sometimes means doing horrendous things that make their loved ones hate them. It's a contradictory defense mechanism, and it can be very difficult figuring out how to grapple with people that have this kind of pathology. Faith took it to such extremes that no, I don't think a lot of what she's done is forgiveable. But that doesn't mean she can't be helped. No one owes her anything at this point, including the audience, but she still exists in that world and has to be reckoned with.

I'm glad you didn't look at the title of this one. It would have spoiled. You might want to consider not looking at them for a while. There is one coming up in Buffy that spoils. Look at them after though, because the one in particular has a title that is quite funny. When you hit it, you'll know. I'm not sure if you ended up realizing what Faith said to Angel at the end or not. You asked, "Do what?", but then I had trouble understanding some of what you said after, so I couldn't tell if the answer clicked or not. Faith: Just do it. Angel, just do it. Najae: Do what? Faith: Just kill me. Just kill me. Yes, Faith planned this. When she gave Angel the gun and wanted him to shoot her, it's because she wanted him to kill her. She took Wesley, saying that it was to "get him in the game." As in, piss him off enough to kill her. That's also why Angel didn't fight back. He knew. He said, "I know what you want." He knew she was trying to make him kill her. I did pick up on you realizing the parallel between Angel and Faith and the reason for the flashbacks, but I couldn't quite tell how much was clear about Faith and her plan here. Sorry if I just explained stuff you already mentioned. Sometimes your voice is a little muffled. Anyway, great reaction. Looking forward to the next one. :D
